UW-Milwaukee's Groves, Youngstown State's Anderson named U.S. Army Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sophomore Josh Groves(baseball) and Youngstown State University junior Bethany Anderson (women's outdoortrack and field) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of theWeek, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Wednesday (May 30).
Groves batted .474 (9-for-19) in four games at the 2007 U.S. Army Horizon LeagueBaseball Championship, helping the Panthers to a third-place finish. His hits included fi vedoubles and a home run, as he scored six runs and drove in eight. Groves tied a tournamentsingle-game record with six RBI versus Youngstown State on Wednesday (May 23).
In the classroom, Groves carries a 3.28 grade-point average as a marketing major. Hisacademic work earned a spot on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll last fall.
Anderson broke her own school record in the hammer throw at the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday (May26), finishing eighth at the meet with a toss of 188 feet, 11 inches. The distance was 13 feet farther than her efforts at the 2007 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she won individual titles in both the hammer and the shot put. Anderson's finish was the highest ever at a regional meet by a YSU competitor, and three places shy of earning an automatic invitation to the national championship meet.
In the classroom, Anderson boasts a 3.35 grade-point average as a health/pre-med major. She is a three-time Academic All-League honoree (between indoor and outdoor track), and was recently named YSU's female student-athlete of the year.
The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
This week's awards are the final weekly honors for the 2006-07 academic year. A total of 77 awards were presented in the initial year of the Scholar-Athlete of the Week program, with 54 different student-athletes recognized for their accomplishments.
OTHER MALE NOMINEE:
Mike Turjanica, Youngstown State (baseball, junior, 3.32, biology) hit a pair of home runs in YSU's victory over Butler University in the U.S. Army Horizon League Baseball Championship last Thursday (May 25). He drove in three runs in that game, and added a hit and scored a run in a 15-9triumph over Cleveland State University on Friday (May 26).
OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:
Genni Gardner, Butler (outdoor track and field, junior, 3.946, communications disorders) placed 13th in the women's 5,000 meters at the NCAA Mideast Outdoor Regional. It was the highest finish by any Horizon League athlete in running events at the regional meet. Gardner won the 800-metertitle at this year's Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Marcia Faustin, Loyola (outdoor track and field, senior, 3.48, biology) tied for eighth place in the high jump with a leap of 1.71 meters (fi ve feet, 7¼ inches) at the NCAA Mideast Outdoor Regional. Faustin won her eighth League high-jump championship (four indoor, four outdoor) earlier this month, becoming the first athlete ever to win that event eight times.
