INDIANAPOLIS -- Milwaukee senior right fielder Derek Peake (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha Catholic Memorial) and UIC senior first baseman Alex Lee (Mount Prospect, Ill./Hersey) have been named the Horizon League Co-Batters of the Week, while Wright State right-hander Andrew Elliott (Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) is the League’s Pitcher of the Week, for the week of May 11-17.
Milwaukee (35-18, 16-13 Horizon) went a perfect 4-0 this past week while hosting Northern Illinois and sweeping Oakland in a three-game conference series to tab the No. 3 seed of the 2015 Horizon League Baseball Championship. UIC (28-20-1, 22-8 Horizon) swept Youngstown State to claim the outright conference regular season title as well as the top seed of the tournament. The Championship’s No. 2 seed, Wright State (38-14, 21-8 Horizon), claimed a mid-week victory over Toledo while grabbing all three wins against Valparaiso last weekend.
Peake led the Panthers to a stellar undefeated week with a .625 batting average while going 10-for-16 at the plate. The senior extended his hitting streak to 11 games and topped the week with a career-best four hits on Senior Day on Saturday. The right fielder posted a slugging percentage of .688, on-base percentage of .647 while tabbing two RBI’s, a double and two runs scored.
Lee played a pivotal role in the Flames’ weekend series against the Penguins to help capture the Horizon League regular season title. The senior hit for a .455 average while belting his first career grand slam in game two of the series. Lee went 5-for-11 at the plate while scoring three runs, tabbing five RBI’s, a .727 slugging percentage and garnering two walks.
Elliott earned three saves for the Raiders, with one coming in each of the team’s three victories over the Crusaders. On Thursday, the right-hander struck out three batters in one inning of work followed-up by a two-strikeout single inning performance on Friday. His final save of the weekend came on Saturday where he recorded the final out with bases loaded. In 2.1 innings, Elliot allowed just one hit, fanned five batters and held hitters to a .125 batting-against average.
The Horizon League Baseball Championship runs from May 20-23 at the Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. with the League champion advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
All-session passes for the four-day tournament start at $25 for adults and $20 for seniors and children. A day pass costs $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children. All games will be carried on ESPN3.
Horizon League top performers (May 11-17)
Ryan Hincley, UIC (Sr., LHP): Posted one save for UIC in 3.1 innings of work while allowing just one hit and fanning five batters.
Justin Langley, Milwaukee (So., LHP): Recorded five hitless innings for the Panthers in his winning performance against Oakland. Carried a perfect game into the fifth inning with four strikeouts.
Alex Larivee, Youngstown State (So., OF): Tabbed a .500 batting average with a 5-for-10 outing at the plate over the week. Hit a double and a triple at the plate in addition to two walks, four runs scored and a RBI.
Justin North, Youngstown State (Sr., RHP): Did not allow an earned run in five innings at UIC Saturday and tallied a 1.35 earned run average in 6.2 innings of work.
Gabe Snyder, Wright State (Fr., 1B): Hit for a .400 average at the plate while going 6-for-15 for the Raiders. Collected four RBI’s, two runs scored and a double throughout the week.
