UWM's Waldhart, Green Bay's Spading Honored as U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimmer Jeremy Waldhart and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's swimmer Christine Spading have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Nov. 9, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (Nov. 14).


Waldhart (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) claimed the award for the second week in a row after winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke events against the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of North Dakota Nov. 8, claiming the 100 back in 53.38 and 200 back in 1:55.80. He also placed third in the 200 individual medley at the meet.


In the classroom, Waldhart carries a 3.95 grade-point average as a business major and has been named to the Dean's List every semester. In addition, he has been selected for the Academic Winter All-Horizon League Team and was named ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-District last spring.


Spading (Andover, Minn./homeschool), a sprint freestyle specialist, won five of her six events last week, helping Green Bay to a pair of dual-meet victories. Her individual crowns came in the 50-yard freestyle (25.16) and 100 free (53.85) at South Dakota State University Nov. 7. In addition, she was runner-up in the 400 free (4:40.31) at the University of South Dakota Nov. 8 and swam on a total of three winning relay teams in the two meets.


A psychology major, Spading owns a 3.91 grade-point average major and last year was named to the UW-Green Bay Dean's List.


The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
