INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimmer Jeremy Waldhart and Valparaiso University women's volleyball player Allison Sears have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Nov. 2, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (Nov. 7).
Waldhart (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) won the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke and took second in the 200 individual medlay Oct. 31 in Milwaukee's dual-meet loss to Wright State University. He followed that up with three victories in three tries in the Panthers' victory over Wheaton College Nov. 1, claiming the 1,000 free, 400 individual medlay and 200 breaststroke.
As a business major, Waldhart carries a 3.951 grade-point average at Milwaukee. He has been named to the UWM Dean's List, the Horizon League All-Academic Team and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team during his collegiate career.
Sears (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) helped the Valparaiso volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches with a pair of sweeps at Cleveland State University and Youngstown State University last weekend. She posted 12 kills and three blocks against the defending League champion Vikings Oct. 31 and then put up 10 kills and two blocks versus the Penguins Nov. 1. She has averaged four kills per set in the Crusaders' winning streak.
In the classroom, Sears maintains a 3.882 grade-point average as an elementary education major at Valparaiso. She was selected to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll following both semesters last year and earned Mid-Continent All-Academic Team honors as a sophomore.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
