Valparaiso sweeps first weekly softball awards for the 2010 season

INDIANAPOLIS; Valparaiso sophomore Kelsey Phalen has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, while sophomore teammate Shaleigh Jansen has earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending Feb. 14.

Phalen hit a .500 during a 3-1 week for the Crusaders at the UNI Dome Classic.  She picked up at least one hit each game, including a pair of multi-hit efforts.  The Batavia, Ill., native, posted seven RBI, drove in the game-winning run against South Dakota and scored the game-winning run against Dayton.

Jansen picked up a win and save during 8.2 innings of work last week. She struck out 10 batters, including seven in a complete-game win over Dayton.  The Ottawa, Ill., native, gave up just one run and five hits during her three appearances for a .081 ERA.

Phalen and Jansen both garner their first career weekly accolades.
