INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso senior Morgan Beil has been named Horizon League Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, while Cleveland State senior Maggie Hannon has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for the period of Sept. 9-Oct. 5.
Beil was named Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Crusaders to two home victories to improve to 3-1 in League play. She opened the weekend with seven kills in Valpo’s 3-1 win over Youngstown State. On Saturday, she hit .737 as she recorded 15 kills in 19 attempts in the Crusaders’ 3-1 win over Cleveland State. The .737 hitting percentage set a Valpo record for highest attack percentage in a four-match set, it also marks the highest hitting percentage in a match for a Horizon League player this season.
For the weekend, Beil had 22 kills on 42 attempts, with just three attack errors for a hitting percentage of .452.
Valparaiso (16-2, 3-1) returns to the road for two matches next week as they take on Oakland (11-7, 3-0) on Friday night before ending the road trip on Saturday with a match at Wright State.
Hannon earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after registering a League-best 13 blocks last week in two matches for the Vikings. She tied her career-high with 10 blocks in CSU’s 3-1 win over UIC. Four of her blocks against the Flames were solo. The 10 blocks were the most in a single match by a League player last week and tied for the second-most in a single match by a League player this season.
Cleveland State (9-8, 2-2) is back in action this weekend when it hosts Milwaukee (8-8, 3-0) on Friday night and Green Bay on Saturday.
Other Top Performers for the Week:
Sammy Condon, Oakland (Fr., MH) - Condon averaged 3.0 kills per set this weekend, hitting .406 (18-5-32) in Oakland’s two matches.
Lexi Egler, Youngstown State (Sr., OH) - Egler recorded her 1,000th career kill and 1,000 career dig in match versus Valpo. She had 14 kills and 14 digs in four sets versus the Crusaders. She added 10 kills and 10 digs in YSU’s four-set win over UIC.
Taylor Golabowski, Milwaukee (Sr., DS) - Golabowski paced UWM’s defense with 22 digs in Milwaukee’s 3-1 win over Green Bay. She became the 11th player all-time to reach the 1,000 career digs plateau at Milwaukee.
Abby Jeffcoat, Green Bay (Fr., OH) - Jeffcoat led the Phoenix with nine kills and 10 digs in four-set loss at Milwaukee.
Ashley Langjahr, Wright State (Sr., RS) - Langjahr had five kills, one block and one dig versus Oakland.
Myanna Ruiz, Milwaukee (So., OH/S) - Ruiz had her second consecutive triple-double with 12 kills, 24 assists and 10 digs in UWM’s 3-1 win over Green Bay. She is just the second player in UWM history to have three triple-doubles in their career.
Ciara Schultz, Oakland (Jr., S) - Schultz averaged 1.3 kills, 9.8 assists and 3.17 digs per set in two matches for the Golden Grizzlies last week.
Maggie Strus, UIC (Sr., DS) - Strus became UIC’s all-time digs leader last week. She had 31 digs in two matches last week.
Nikki Thompson, Youngstown State (Jr., L) - Thompson averaged 5.5 digs/set last week for the Penguins. She had 27 digs in four sets versus Valparaiso. The mark tied for the most by a HL player in a four-set match this season and were the second-most by a Penguin in a four-set match in YSU’s HL era.
Jessie Thornton, Wright State (Fr., L) - Thornton had 14 digs in three sets at Oakland.
Kelsey Victor, Valparaiso (Sr., MH) - Victor led all players with five blocks versus Youngstown State and six blocks versus Cleveland State. She ranks second in the League in blocks for the year. She added 11 kills in each match, hitting .432 (22-3-44) for the weekend.
Stephenee Yancy, UIC (Jr., MB) - Yancy had 18 kills versus both Cleveland State and Youngstown State last week. She has recorded double-digit kills in all 19 of UIC’s matches this week.
