INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso sophomore Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind.) is the Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while sophomore Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind.) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 16-22.

The Valparaiso men’s tennis team competed at the Purdue Fall Invitational over the weekend at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The tournament featured teams from Purdue, DePaul, Western Michigan, IUPUI, Eastern Kentucky, Cleveland State, Green Bay, Marquette and Chicago State.

Emhardt competed in the Flight C singles where he captured the title going 4-0 throughout the weekend. In his first match against Western Michigan’s Matt Hamilton, Emhardt won 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. The sophomore went on to win his next two matches over Eastern Kentucky’s Juanjo de la Liera (6-1, 6-2) and the Broncos’ Pablo Mora (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). In the finals, Emhardt won in straight-sets over the Blue Demons’ Kyle Johnson, 6-2, 6-4.

In Flight A doubles play with fellow sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch, the duo picked up four wins and the championship. Schorsch and Emhardt defeated pairs from the University of Chicago (8-5), Eastern Kentucky (8-7) and DePaul (8-7). In the title match, they defeated conference-foes Colton Buffington and Ali Shabib of Cleveland State, 8-3.

The Crusaders’ women’s tennis team played in a double-header match on Saturday against Aquinas and Davenport before traveling south to Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday to take on Marian. Valparaiso defeated Aquinas (7-2) and Davenport (6-3) but fell to Marian (7-2), going 2-1 overall for the weekend.

Heuer went perfect in both singles and doubles play versus the three squads. On Saturday at No. 4 singles, she tallied two straight-set victories over Aquinas’ Tiffany Tori 6-1, 6-1 and Davenport’s Monterrat Elizonda 6-2. 6-1. In doubles plays with teammate Megan Barthels, the duo defeated twosomes at No. 2 doubles from Aquinas (8-5) and Davenport (8-5).

The following day at Marian, Heuer continued to dominate on the court defeating Veronica Clark in straight-sets at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1. With Barthels at No. 2 doubles, the pair collected a victory over Marian’s Anna Potter and Sarah Potter, 8-5.

The Valparaiso men’s team travels to Tulsa, Okla. for the ITA All-American tournament beginning Friday, September 26 and running through Sunday, September 28.

Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Remi Chancerel, Youngstown State (Fr.): Posted a 4-1 singles mark and 2-1 doubles record at the IU Hoosier Invitational. Closed out his singles performance with two wins over opponents from Louisville.
Joe VanMeter, Cleveland State (Jr.): Won the Flight B consolation bracket with a 3-1 record.

Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Anna Davydova, Detroit (So.): Captured the No. 3 singles flight at the Bowling Green Invitational going 3-0. During her singles matches, she did not drop a set to players from Cleveland State, Toledo and Cincinnati.
Lauren Golick, Cleveland State (So.): Finished as runner-up in the Flight 1 singles bracket at the BGSU Invitational. Golick also went 3-0 in doubles with Ellen Folkers in the Flight 3 bracket.
Dominka Lackova, Youngstown State (So.): Teamed up with Marta Burak to win the Flight A doubles at the Bowling Green Invitational. Lackova also went 1-2 in singles play.
