INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso freshman Spencer Mahoney and UIC junior Joey Begel have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of May 14-20.

Mahoney picked up Batter of the Week accolades after batting .692 for the Crusaders in their sweep of Youngstown State. The three victories allowed Valparaiso to overtake Wright State to win its first outright Horizon League baseball title since joining the conference for the 2008 season.

Mahoney had multiple hits in all three games. He opened the series with a 2-for-4 showing, batting in two runs, in the Crusaders 8-3 victory. On Friday night, he was 4-for-5 with a double and another RBI in Valpo’s 8-7 victory. On Saturday, in Valparaiso’s title-clinching game, the freshman was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.

Begel picked up Pitcher of the Week honors after holding Butler to just four hits and one earned run in eight innings of work on Thursday. The junior struck out four Bulldogs, while walking just two, while limiting the Butler lineup to a .143 batting average.

Other Horizon League top performers (May 14-20)
Paul Hoenecke, Milwaukee, Sr., 1B/C -
Hoenecke ran his hitting streak to 11 games and is batting .545 (24-for-44) during that stretch. He had multi-hit efforts in three of UWM’s four games last week and was 4-for-4 on Tuesday.

Drew Dosch, Youngstown State, So., 3B - Dosch batted .375 last week for the Penguins. He hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season against Valparaiso and also doubled twice against the Crusaders.

Nick Addison, UIC, Jr., CF - Addison batted .375 for the Flames last weekend in their series-win over Butler. He hit his first career grand slam on Friday. He stole two bases last week and finished the regular season a perfect 15-for-15 in stolen bases.

Radley Haddad, Butler, Jr., C - Haddad hit .417 and scored a team-best three runs during a three-game series at UIC. He scored twice in Butler’s 3-2 win against the Flames on Sunday.

Tyler Deetjen, Valparaiso, Sr., LHP - Deetjen did not allow an earned run in eighth innings on Thursday against Youngstown State. He scattered seven hits and walked just one, while picking up his team-leading sixth victory of the year.

Pat Shedlock, Youngstown State, Jr., RHP - Shedlock allowed just one run in 4.2 innings of relief last week against Valparaiso.
