INDIANAPOLIS – Valparaiso’s Jarrett Mickens has been named Horizon League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month and Cleveland State’s Carys Behn is the Female Scholar-Athlete for the month of January.
Mickens, a senior from Aurora, Ill., broke two 35 year-old school records in both the triple jump (48’2”) and long jump (23’9”) in the month of January. He was named the Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 18 after setting the triple jump record. He won the triple jump both times he competed and recorded first and third place finishes in the long jump.
A biology major, Mickens holds a 3.623 grade-points average. He earned academic all-league honors during both indoor and outdoor seasons last year and has been a member of the Horizon League honor roll each semester eligible.
Behn, a sophomore from Westville, South Africa, won five races and placed second in six others during the month of January while helping the Vikings to a program-record 15 dual meet victories.
A communications major, Behn holds a 3.75 GPA.
The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
