Valparaiso 67, Chicago State 46
Wright State 60, Idaho State 45

Both Valparaiso and Wright State collected its fourth wins on Friday, resuming post-Thanksgiving play by knocking off Chicago State and Idaho State, respectively.

Valparaiso 67, Chicago State 46
Valparaiso never trailed, rolling past visiting Chicago State, 67-46, at the Athletics-Recreation Center in the subregional round of the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic.

Valparaiso (4-1) shot just 39.7 percent and was 6-of-21 from the three-point line, but limited Chicago State to 18-of-50 shooting. The Crusaders enjoyed a 44-30 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards.

Bobby Capobianco, in his return to the Valparaiso lineup after hernia surgery, had six offensive rebounds for the Crusaders, on his way to a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double. Capobianco’s 0.543 efficiency-per-possession rating easily led all players in the game.

In all, five Crusaders posted better efficiency/possession ratings better than those from Chicago State.

Capobianco was one of three Crusaders in double figures, with Ryan Broekhoff leading the way with 15 points and Kevin Van Wijk adding 12. Matt Kenney and Erik Buggs each had just four points, but contributed seven and six assists, respectively.

The Crusaders opened a 16-3 lead, before Chicago State closed within six points with 7:24 to go in the half. However, Valparaiso closed the half as its opened, finishing the half on a 13-5 burst, getting a Capobianco three-point play ahead of a dunk by Jordan Coleman and a jumper from Broekhoff  ahead of the horn.

Chicago State pulled with eight at the 11:19 mark of the second half, but Valpo outscored the Cougars, 21-8 the rest of the way. Van Wijk and Broekhoff had all of Valpo’s points during the game-clinching 16-0 run, each scoring eight points.

Wright State 60, Idaho State 45
Wright State took its first lead of the game early in the first half and never looked back, grabbing a 60-45 win over Idaho State at the Utah Thanksgiving Tournament in Salt Lake City.

Wright State (4-1) was hot from the three-point arc in the first half, eventually shooting 4-of-9. The early threes helped the Raiders build a 19-7 lead midway through the half, with Miles Dixon and Reggie Arceneaux each knocking down three-pointers in the run.

Free throws allowed Idaho State to hang around in the first half, as Wright State shot just 1-of-7 from the charity stripe compared to the Bengals’ 10-of-12 mark. On the night, Idaho State was 22-for-27 at the free-throw line, while the Raiders just 9-of-23.

JT Yoho’s tip-in early in the second half put Wright State ahead, 36-25, and the Raiders would lead by at least 10 points the remainder of the evening and by as any as 22 points.

Wright State featured its offensive balance throughout the game, with nine out of the 13 players who appeared in the game scoring. Miles Dixon came off the bench to lead the Raiders with 16 points. In total, WSU received 24 points from its bench.

Matt Vest chipped in 11 points, while Jerran Young and Tavares Sledge each had seven rebounds to pace WSU.

The Raiders had a field day in the paint, outscoring the Bengals, 32-4, in the lane. Wright State forced 17 Idaho State turnovers, converting the miscues into 19 points.
