INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso senior forward Ryan Broekhoff (Frankston, Victoria, Australia/Australian Insititute of Sport) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Cleveland State freshman guard Bryn Forbes (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) has been named the Newcomer of the Week, for the week of Jan. 7-13. The award is the third of the season for Broekhoff and second for Forbes.
Valparaiso (13-5, 3-1 Horizon) tallied two road victories in Horizon League action last week, knocking off UIC, 75-70, ahead of a 76-52 win at Milwaukee on Saturday. Cleveland State (10-8, 2-2 Horizon) started the week with a 60-50 win over visiting UIC before falling at Wright State, 69-53. The Vikings rebounded with a 74-62 victory against Detroit on Saturday.
Broekhoff carried the Crusaders in both games, posting 21 points and 10 rebounds in Valpo’s win at UIC. The senior’s jumper in the lane with 2:23 to play put Valparaiso ahead for good, breaking a 61-61 tie. Finishing the game 7-of-13 from the floor, Broekhoff went 3-of-6 from three-point range.
In Saturday’s win, Broekhoff knocked down a career-high seven three-pointers, the first coming four seconds into the game, giving Valparaiso a lead it would never relinquish. With a 0.615 efficiency-per-possession rating, Broekhoff dominated the contest with 26 points and 10 rebounds, giving him a Horizon League-leading five double-doubles on the year.
The reigning Horizon League Player of the Year, Broekhoff sits second in the Horizon League with a 17.0 points per game average, leading the League with 8.3 rebounds per game. Broekhoff is second in both free-throw percentage (90.3) and three-point percentage (47.0). Nationally, Broekhoff’s 128.0 offensive rating is 30th, per Ken Pomeroy, while his 67.4 true-shooting percentage is 18th.
Inserted into Cleveland State’s starting lineup, Forbes averaged 16.7 ppg over three games, starting his week with 14 points in the win over UIC and leading the Vikings with 15 at Wright State. However, the freshman saved his finest performance for Saturday, when he went 5-of-7 from three-point range en route to 21 points in CSU’s win over the previously unbeaten Titans.
Forbes’ five three-pointers tied the Cleveland State freshman record, while he set a new career-high with eight rebounds. In conference play, Forbes sits in seventh with 42.9-percent three-point mark; his 2.3 three-pointers per game ranks sixth.
