Green Bay Shootout
Katie Pokrandt shot an 82 on Sunday as the Phoenix finished in second place in the Green Bay Shootout with a team score of 333. Chicago State won the event by shooting a 311 while UIC (342) and Green Bay White (370) finished in third and fourth place. Grace Abitz was one shot behind Pokrandt with an 83 while Stephanie Laude and Avery Steen each carded an 84.

For UIC, Cherise Mangal’s round of 80 led UIC. The Flames finished with a team score of 342, which placed third out of four squads. Ryann Gilley carded an 85 and Caitlan Smollen finished with an 86.

Indiana Fall Kickoff
The Youngstown State women's golf team opened the campaign under first-year coach Nathan Miklos at the Indiana Fall Kickoff on Sunday at the Purgatory Golf Club.

The Penguins placed sixth out of seven squads competing in the one-day 36-hole event. YSU carded a two-round score of 647 (337-310). The Guins had a 27-stroke improvement from the first round to the second. Louisville won the tournament with a 570 finishing 27 shots in front of the host Hoosiers.

Leading the way for the Penguins was Aislynn Merling who was 16th with a 151. Merling had rounds of 77 and 74 on Sunday. Sophomore Emily Rohanna was 42nd with a 160 (83-77), Allison Mitzel placed 51st with a 167 (86-81), Angela Molaskey was 56th with a 171 and Haleigh Guerrero had a 188.
Individuals for the Penguins included Mia Barchetti who was 53rd with a 168 (83-85), Sana Khan was 58th with a 172 (84-88) and Kelly Fleming was 59th carding a 179.

YSU returns to the links on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host a triangular at Candywood Golf Club.

Redbird Invitational
NORMAL, Ill. - Kassandra Komma carded a round of 77, while Julia Montgomery posted a round of 79 to lead the Oakland women's golf team at the Redbird Invitational on Monday at Weibring Golf Club. The Golden Grizzlies shot a final round 323 and finished in seventh place (929/+65).

"There were so many positives from this event," said OU coach Russ Cunningham. "We need to focus on competing again in five days, while remembering all of the good shots! These players have proven that they can compete at this level. By working on and improving the short game and course management, I'm confident we will have our 'A' game on a more consistent basis."

Montgomery tallied a 19th-place finish in her first-ever collegiate tournament. She ended with an overall score of 228 (+12). Komma ended in a tie for 24th place after shooting 231 (+15). Morgan Smith finished the tournament in a tie for 27th place after shooting a final round 85 to post an overall score of 232 (+16).

Toledo won the tournament with an overall score of 890, 12 shots clear of Ball State. BSU's Jenna Hague rallied from two shots back to capture medalist honors with an overall score of 215 (-1).

The Golden Grizzlies will travel up the road to East Lansing to compete in the Mary Fossum Invitational, Saturday and Sunday.

Golfweek Program Challenge
Valparaiso senior Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) set a new program scoring record for a 54-hole tournament as the Crusaders wrapped up play Tuesday at the Golfweek Program Challenge, held at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawley’s Island, S.C.

Valpo closed the tournament with a third-round total of 341 on Tuesday, finishing the event with a cumulative total of 971 to finish in 11th place out of the 12 competing squads.  The 971 score is the program’s third-best all-time in a 54-hole event.  Campbell earned the team title by shooting an 862.

Kleckner finished out a consistent tournament with her second straight round of 74 on Tuesday, giving her a score of 225 (+12) over the 54 holes to finish in a tie for 21st place.  The 225 is a new program record for a 54-hole event by three shots, while Kleckner’s score in relation to par matches the program record in that regard.

Freshman Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) closed on a high note, posting her best tournament round on Tuesday as she shot a 79 to finish at 247, good for 50th place.  Sophomore Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) finished right behind Kim in 51st place with a 249, while freshman Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) placed 56th with a 54-hole score of 266.

Valparaiso returns to action in two weeks at the SIUE DoubleTree Invitational in Edwardsville, Ill. at Sunset Hills C.C.

Green Bay Invitational
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomores Katie Pokrandt (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) both notched top-20 finishes on Tuesday as the Green Bay women’s golf team completed the Green Bay Invitational at Green Bay Country Club.

On the par-73, 5,930 yard course, Pokrandt shot a 5-over par 78 on Tuesday to finish tied for 16th overall (160=82-78). Grunder, who carded a 4-over 77 on Monday, shot an 84 in round two to slip one shot behind Pokrandt in a tie for 19th place (161=77-84). Green Bay finished the 36-hole tournament with a team score of 657 (327-330) to finish in seventh place.

Indianapolis (617=299-318) held off Chicago State (620=310-310) to win the team title by three strokes. Chicago State’s Casey MacNiel’s even par round of 72 gave her the individual title by four shots over Jaclyn Schindler of UIndy. Butler (621=314-307) shot the best score on Tuesday to finish in third place while Lewis (638=320-318) and Loyola (646=320-326) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) tied for 32nd (167=82-85) for the Phoenix and freshman Avery Steen (Luck, Wis.) shaved three strokes off her first round score to finish in a tie for 37th (169=86-83).

UIC also competed at the Green Bay Invitational. Highlighting the action in Green Bay was UIC's third lowest round in program history. During first round action at the Invitational on Monday, UIC combined for a round of 320 and finished the day in a tie for fourth place. The performance only trails past UIC efforts at the 2011 Detroit Titans Fall Classic (308) and 2012 Detroit Titans Fall Classic (312).

Elizabeth Curtiss, who carded a career-low 78 last week at the Chi-Town Classic, and Ryann Gilley both shot a 78 to lead the Flames in round one. Junior Cherise Mangal carded an 80, senior Angela Shin shot an 84 and sophomore Caitlan Smollen rounded out the UIC lineup with an 86.

“I am very pleased with Cherise's consistency and course management,” said UIC head coach Carol Rhoades after the round of 320. “Ryann is gaining confidence and we look forward to her improved scoring. Elizabeth made significant progress after a rough start by refocusing her efforts around the green. I am very proud of the way we refocused our efforts and dug deep to complete our round.”

The Flames recorded a 329 on Tuesday in round two and fell two spots in the standings. All UIC players were in the 80s, with Gilley’s 80 leading the group. Smollen followed with an 81 and Mangal carded an 82.

Gilley finished in a tie for ninth place with a 36-hole total of 158. She missed matching her lowest career 36-hole total by one stroke, which was set at the 2012 Detroit Titans Fall Classic (157).

Mangal finished with a 36-hole total of 162 and placed in a tie for 24th. Meanwhile, Curtiss finished in 28th (164), Smollen landed in a tie for 32nd (167) and Shin placed in 39th (170).
