Valparaiso goalkeeper Tom Serratore is the subject of the cover story in the Summer 2013 issue of the NCAA's Champion magazine.
The article, titled "Shorn to save," profiles Serratore's work for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-for-profit that raises money for research to combat childhood cancers. The redshirt junior has helped organize head-shaving fundraisers in each of his three years at Valpo, raising nearly $50,000. He has been shaving his head in solidarity with cancer patients for seven years now, earning the distinction of Knight of the Bald Table, according to the Champion article.
Back in April, horizonleague.com covered the 2013 fundraiser at Valparaiso's Athletics-Recreation Facility in an article titled "Valpo Men's Soccer Hosts St. Baldrick's Fundraiser." Serratore was prominently featured in that story as well, along with assistant coach Jeff Oleck, university president Dr. Mark Heckler and Great Clips franchisee David Thompson.
“Cancer touches everyone. This organization really hits home with that,” Serratore told horizonleague.com at the time. “To see a child go through cancer, it breaks my heart. As an athlete, you never want to see a kid sidelined. To have the community support this, it shows that we’re willing to get behind it and we want every kid to be cured of cancer.”
The Champion article also features sidebars on Valparaiso's emphasis on community service and spirituality and on a brief history of the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
