INDIANAPOLIS -- Turning in two shutouts on the week, Valparaiso junior goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck (Coralville, Iowa) has been named Horizon League Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, for the week of Oct. 17-23. The award is the first of Zobeck’s career.
Valparaiso (7-5-3, 3-0-1 Horizon) turned in consecutive 2-0 shutouts last week, blanking IPFW in non-conference play before a key shutout of Milwaukee in a meeting of League leaders on Saturday. With 10 points, the Crusaders sit in a three-way tie atop the Horizon League ladder and are the League’s lone unbeaten team in conference play.
Zobeck did all that was asked of him in the two matches, notching a save in both while directing a stout Valparaiso defensive effort. With his eighth shutout of the year on Saturday, Zobeck set a new Valparaiso single-season record.
Turning in three consecutive shutouts, Zobeck stands atop the League’s goalkeeping statistics, pacing the conference with a 0.76 goals against average and eight shutouts. Zobeck needs two more blankings to move into the top 10 for a single season in Horizon League history.
Valparaiso will be in action twice this week, splitting matches on the road and at home against the League’s two Chicago members. The Crusaders head to Loyola (3-10-1, 1-4-0 Horizon) on Wednesday, Oct. 26, for an 8 p.m. ET match. On Saturday, Oct. 29, Valpo returns home to host UIC (7-4-3, 1-2-1 Horizon). The match will begin at 8 p.m. ET.
