INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago junior Elyse VanBogaert has been named Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Feb. 23-March 1. The selection marks VanBogaert's first career weekly honor from the League office.
A native of Elburn, Ill., VanBogaert averaged 21.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of Horizon League games last week. The forward made a sizzling 19-of-25 (.760) from the floor, 1-of-3 from three-point range and 3-of-3 from the free-throw stripe.
VanBogaert and the Ramblers split their two conference contests. LU posted a 70-52 win over Youngstown State University on Thursday, but suffered a 67-62 setback to Cleveland State University on Saturday.
VanBogaert helped Loyola open up leads of 19-0 and 29-5 against the Penguins. She nailed 11-of-13 from the floor en route to a game-high 23 points.
Through 26 tilts this season, VanBogaert ranks third in the Horizon League in free-throw percentage (.815), fifth in blocked shots (1.0) and seventh in scoring (12.2).
Loyola (8-18 overall, 3-13 HL) wraps up its regular-season slate with a pair of road games this week. The Ramblers travel to Wright State University (12-15, 8-8) on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET and the University of Detroit Mercy (9-18, 5-11) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The 2009 Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship begins Monday, March 9, with two first-round games. The No. 7 seed will host the No. 10 seed, while the No. 8 seed will host the No. 9 seed. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. local time.
