INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso junior Ashley Varner has been named Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 21-27. The selection marks Varner's first career weekly honor from the League office.
Varner, a forward from South Bend, Ind., recorded 23 points, seven rebounds and two steals in a 62-50 setback at Cincinnati last Monday. She knocked down 9-of-19 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc against the Big East Conference Bearcats.
Varner ranks among League leaders in blocked shots (T-3rd, 1.0), rebounds (7th, 6.9) and three-point percentage (9th, .400) through nine games this season. She also places 14th in the conference with an 11.1 scoring average.
Valparaiso, 3-6 overall, heads to the San Diego Surf `n' Slam for two contests this week. The Crusaders open with Southeastern Conference foe Auburn on Monday at 10 p.m. ET.
