Senior Alex Aversa (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) carded an 84 to pace the Titans during the first round of play Thursday at the NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional in Columbus, IN.
Aversa carded nines of 41 and 43 in an historic afternoon as the Titans, as the 2010 Horizon League champions, played their first round ever at the Regionals.
Junior Alainna Stefan (Dearborn, MI/Mercy) and classmate Marni Achterhoff (Muskegon, MI/Mona Shores) are next in line for UDM after each carded an 87.
As a team, the 23rd-seeded Titans stand 23rd with a total of 352. Murray State (336) is right ahead of Detroit, while Jackson State is five back of UDM.
Arizona State shot a 297 to take the Day One lead, and Southern Cal (299) stands second.
"We got a lot of the jitters out of the way today," coach Terri Anthony-Ryan said. "Today wasn't so much about the big things as it was the little things and I think we'll do better in Round 2."
Detroit will head back to the first tee on Friday morning at 8:55 a.m. for the second of three scheduled rounds. Follow the Titans on Golfstat, which will provide live scoring throughout the Regional.
