INDIANAPOLIS- Youngstown State University middle hitter Abby Ettenhofer and Cleveland State University outside hitter Jenna Maddocks are two of 18 Division I volleyball players earning Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The awards, sponsored by ESPN The Magazine, were announced on Wednesday (Nov. 30).

Ettenhofer, a Hebron, Ohio, native, was named to the Second-Team Academic All-America squad, while Maddocks, a native of Norwalk, Ohio, gained Third-Team distinction.

Ettenhofer averaged 3.06 kills per game to lead the Penguins' offense in 2005. She also ranked fifth in the Horizon League with a .279 hitting percentage on the season while averaging 0.59 blocks per game. The senior maintained a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a middle childhood education major, and also serves as the president of YSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Maddocks ranked second on the Vikings' squad with 2.92 kills per game and third in digs with an average of 2.42 per game. The senior also recorded a team-high 10 double-doubles this season and was named Horizon League Player of the Week on Oct. 24. Maddocks owns a 3.98 grade-point average as an early childhood education major, while additionally serving as the secretary for the Alpha Delta Lambda Honors Society and vice-president of CSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Ettenhofer is the eighth YSU student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors while Maddocks is the fifth Viking in school history to earn the distinction.

Xavier University outside hitter Kate Duchek was named the Academic All-America of the Year, earning a 4.00 grade-point average as an education major. She averaged 4.04 kills for the Musketeers, who ended the season with a loss to Temple University in the semifinals of the Atlantic-10 Tournament. The remainder of the First-Team unit includes two representatives from top-ranked University of Nebraska in Christina Houghtelling and Sarah Pavan, plus the University of Toledo's Kate Bean, Paula Caten from the University of Kansas and Jackie Choi of New Mexico State University.

The Horizon League tied with three other conferences for the second-most selections to the this year's squad with two members. The Western Athletic Conference, Mid-American Conference and Pacific-10 also had two selections apiece. The Big 12 led all leagues with four selections.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) with sophomore or higher standing both athletically and academically. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has presented Academic All-America honors to more than 14,000 student-athletes at the Division I, II, III and NAIA levels.
