BUTLER BULLDOGS
Butler picked up a pair of wins in its first weekend of the season, tallying a 3-1 victory over host UTEP on Aug. 29 before scoring a 3-0 sweep of NJIT on Aug. 30.The Bulldogs held NJIT to an .070 hitting percentage and just 25 kills while recording a season-high 10 blocks as a team.Newcomer Kelsey Labrum notched a double-double (17 kills + 12 digs) in her Butler debut against UTEP.
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGSCleveland State went 1-2 at the Northern Illinois Invitational over the weekend, posting a losing record at a tournament for the first time since Aug. 30-31, 2001.Freshman Jordan Goad collected 21 assists and four aces in her first career start -- against Chicago State on Aug. 30.The Vikings hit .392 vs. Chicago State while holding the Cougars to a -.078 attack percentage.
GREEN BAY PHOENIXGreen Bay has already picked up two victories on the season. Last year, the Phoenix took nine matches to reach that total.Green Bay will host the Country Inn & Suites Classic on Friday and Saturday.
LOYOLA RAMBLERSLoyola knocked off DePaul and Northwestern to claim the Chicagoland Challenge Championship.Junior Dana VanDiggelen collected 37 kills (4.11 kpg) and 33 digs (3.67 dpg) en route to earning Most Valuable Player honors at the Chicagoland Challenge.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERSMilwaukee's win over No. 18 Iowa State was its first over a nationally-ranked foe since 1999.Milwaukee faced three NCAA Tournament teams (Ole Miss, Iowa State & Illinois State) during the first weekend of 2008. The Panthers have two more non-league matches against NCAA Tournament foes (Florida A&M & Michigan State).Milwaukee defeated Ole Miss by a whopping 25-6 count in game four on Aug. 29, but the Rebels hung on for a five-set victory over the Panthers.
UIC FLAMESSenior Kristen Hunt was named to the Chicagoland Challenge All-Tournament Team with 22 kills and a team-best .340 attack percentage.Junior Katerina Hanackova tallied 22 kills and team-high 34 digs in the tournament.Junior Lana Lobdell registered 17 kills, four blocks and hit .326 in the tourney.
VALPARAISO CRUSADERSValparaiso knocked off Nevada, IPFW and Big East foe Notre Dame en route to a Shamrock Invitational Championship over the weekend.The win over Notre Dame was just Valpo's second as a Division-I school.Head coach Carin Avery notched her 150th win at Valpo on Aug. 31.
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERSWright State dropped all three of its matches in the Bearcat Invitational at the University of Cincinnati.The Raiders had four individuals with 20+ kills and four individuals with 20+ digs during the first weekend of the season.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINSSenior Ebony Barbosa showed improvement during each match of the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic over the weekend. The outside hitter went from hitting -.091 (4K-6E-22TA) to notching YSU's only double-double against Toledo (14K-15D).Youngstown State's victory over Toledo was its first in the head-to-head series since 1999. The win was also head coach Joe Bonner's 30th in just over three years with the Penguins.
