INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee senior forward Sammy Vovos (Middleton, Wis.) has been named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer and Detroit junior goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, Ontario, Canada) is the Defensive Player of the Week.

It is the first POWT honor this season for Vovos and the third for Abolins, who was also honored Aug. 20 and Oct. 8.

In the Senior Day contest in Milwaukee, Vovos made the first start of her collegiate career and eventually scored the game-winning goal as the Panthers downed visiting Cleveland State. Vovos also had an assist in the win, which clinch the regular season title and No. 1 postseason seed for Milwaukee.

For Detroit, Abolins recorded four saves in a 2-0 win over Youngstown State, recording her fourth straight shutout and ninth of the season. Abolins now holds the school record with 24 career shutouts. She has posted shutouts in five of seven Horizon League matches this season and has not allowed a goal in 363:22, dating back to an Oct. 6 game at Valparaiso.

Both Milwaukee and Detroit will now await Horizon League Tournament matchups before returning to action.
