Weiss, Tieman Named Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American

Horizon League Freshman of the Year Ryan Weiss of Wright State and Valparaiso’s Jon Tieman have been named Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

(Courtesy WSU Media Relations) -- Pitcher Ryan Weiss of the Wright State baseball team has been chosen as a Freshman All-American as Collegiate Baseball announced the selections on Wednesday.

Weiss (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) was the Freshman of the Year in the Horizon League in 2017 and was also a First Team All-League honoree as he led the league with a 2.13 earned run average, tied for second with eight wins and was third in strikeouts (80), fourth in opposing batting average (.237) and sixth in innings pitched (88.2).  In league play, he tied for first in strikeouts (53), tied for second in wins (5) and was third in ERA (2.34), tied for fourth in innings pitched (57.2) and was fifth in opposing batting average (.230).

Weiss picked up a save in his collegiate debut at #10 Clemson on February 17 and earned wins over USC Upstate, Ohio, Valparaiso, Youngstown State, UIC and Northern Kentucky on three occasions.  He struck out a season-high 10 in seven shutout innings at Northern Kentucky on April 29 and had eight strikeouts at UIC on May 13.  Weiss was selected as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on May 22 as he struck out five in a home win over UIC on May 19.

Weiss is the sixth Raider all-time to receive Freshman All-American honors, joining Michael Schum (2009 American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball), Sean Murphy (2014 Collegiate Baseball), Matt Morrow (2015 Collegiate Baseball), Gabe Snyder (2015 Collegiate Baseball and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) and Caleb Sampen (2016 Collegiate Baseball).

(Courtesy Valparaiso Media Relations) - Valparaiso University baseball freshman Jon Tieman (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Prairie Ridge) received a distinct honor on Wednesday as he was tabbed a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Tieman finished the season with a 4-1 record, 2.93 ERA and seven saves, logging 46 innings over four starts and 16 relief appearances. He racked up 51 strikeouts against just 15 bases on balls.

Tieman shared the team lead in wins with fellow freshman Easton Rhodehouse, led the Crusaders in strikeouts and paced the squad in saves despite moving to the starting rotation for the final month of the season. Even with his limited duty in the bullpen, Tieman is already tied for eighth in program history in career saves after just one year.

Tieman joined Wright State pitcher Ryan Weiss as the only two players from the Horizon League to receive this high honor. Two Missouri Valley Conference players – Bradley’s Brendan Doherty and Illinois State’s John Rave – were named Freshman All-Americans.

Tieman becomes the first Crusader to be named a Freshman All-American since shortstop Spencer Mahoney in 2012.
