INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State’s Krystyna Wieczerzak, senior swimmer, has been named Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month and Butler’s Ben Sippola, 2010 NSCAA All-American, is named the Male Scholar-Athlete for the month of November.

Wieczerzak, a senior from Lodz, Poland is currently leading the Horizon League in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. In November, she took first-place in the 100 backstroke against Butler, Valparaiso, Oakland and Toledo. She also won the 200 backstroke against Oakland and was runner-up against Toledo. Wieczerzak helped the Raiders win the 800 free and 200 medley relays against Butler and Valparaiso, the 400 medley relay against Oakland the 200 medley relay against Toledo.

A biological science major, Wieczerzak holds a 3.56 Grade Point Average (GPA) and was named to the Wright State University and Horizon League Honor Roll in 2008-09 and 2009-10. She was also named to the Dean’s List and Academic All-Horizon League in 08-09 and 09-10.

Sippola, a senior from Northfield, Minn., was named to the 2010 First-Team NSCAA All-American team, the first Bulldog to earn first-team honors in men’s soccer history. He was also named the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 Horizon League Men’s Soccer Championship. Sippola was named to the First-Team All-Horizon League, leading Butler to regular season and tournament championships.

An English literature major, Sippola holds a 3.72 GPA. He was named First-Team 2010 Academic All-America, 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-District V Team, 2009-10 NSCAA Scholar All-North/Central Region Team and to the 2009-10 Horizon League Academic All-League Team. This is his second Scholar-Athlete of the Month award this year.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
