HORIZON LEAGUE HEADLINES


1. Green Bay went 2-0 in the season's first weekend, marking the Phoenix's first 2-0 start since 2004. Green Bay also improved to 4-3 all-time against ACC teams with its 63-61 win at Miami, Fla.

2. Preseason Player of the Year Traci Edwards averaged 19.5 points and 5.0 rebounds during Milwaukee's first two games. Edwards accounted for 36.4 percent of UWM's scoring output for the weekend.

3. Defending champion Cleveland State opened the season in the WNIT, dropping a 76-59 contest at Arizona State.

BUTLER BULLDOGS (0-1)
-- Despite losing by 19 points, Butler trailed by just four at halftime against Ohio State. The Bulldogs held the Buckeyes to 31 percent shooting in the first half.

-- Butler will travel to IPFW Tuesday evening. BU is 3-3 all-time against the Mastodons, including a 15-point win last season.

-- Nine Bulldog players played at least 12 minutes against Ohio State. Nobody played more than 29 minutes.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (0-1)
- Cleveland State's opener at 17th-ranked Arizona State marked the second time the Vikings have opened against a ranked team. CSU hosted Wisconsin in the season opener last year.

-- Sophomore Shawnita Garland handed out a career-high seven assists to go along with eight points and five steals in the season opener.

-- Cleveland State shot .556 (25-for-45) from the field against Arizona State, including a 72.7 percent (16-for-22) effort in the second half.

-- Junior Kailey Klein scored 14 points in the season opener and needs just 14 more to become the 20th player in Cleveland State history to score 1,000 points.

DETROIT TITANS (0-1)
-- Detroit's 66-59 loss to Cincinnati was the head coaching debut for Autumn Rademacher. The former Titans star comes to her alma mater after spending four seasons as an assistant at Green Bay.

-- Three Titans scored in double digits against Cincinnati, with Zemora Davis leading the way with 17. Junior Brigid Mulroy and freshman Jalesa Jones had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

-- Detroit travels to Michigan State Wednesday night before playing its home opener Saturday against Georgia.

GREEN BAY PHOENIX (2-0)
-- Green Bay, which went 26-6 last season en route to a WNIT berth, shot 44.7 percent (17-for-38) from three-point range in the season's first two games.

-- Green Bay's 63-61 win at Miami (Fla.) was the team's fourth against ACC schools all-time. The Phoenix is 2-0 in its series against the Hurricanes.

-- Senior Rachel Porath, this week's Horizon League Player of the Week, is 64 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

LOYOLA RAMBLERS (0-1)
-- Loyola, which was 7-1 last season when leading at halftime, couldn't keep that winning trend alive as it squandered an 11-point halftime lead in its 67-60 loss to Bradley.

-- Junior Maggie McCloskey knocked down a pair of three-pointers to extend her streak of games with at least one trey to 51 straight.

-- After scoring 20 points in Loyola's exhibition win, freshman Ellen Ayoub finished with 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench against Bradley.

MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (0-2)
-- Senior Traci Edwards continues her assault on the Horizon League record book. She made eight free throws in Milwaukee's first two games, bringing her made free throws total to 536. She needs to knock down two more to tie the conference record.

-- Traci Edwards, who scored 39 points in two games last weekend, was named to the all-tournament team of the Kay Yow Wolfpack Invitational.

-- Freshman Amanda Viehauser made two starts last weekend for UWM, becoming the first Panther freshman to start a season opener since Aubrey Hampton in 2003.

UIC FLAMES (0-0)
-- UIC, along with Wright State, has the latest season opener in the Horizon League. The Flames tip off the season Saturday at home against Bradley.

-- UIC opens its season with six home games and won't play on the road until going to Northern Illinois on Saturday, Dec. 20. The Flames only play three games away from home before the first of the year, the lowest total in the Horizon League.

VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (0-0)
-- Valparaiso opens the 2008-09 season at home Wednesday against Bowling Green. Valpo returns four of its top five scorers from last season.

-- The Crusaders, entering their second season in the Horizon League, have recorded 16 winnings seasons in the last 18 years.

-- Valparaiso has a .785 winning percentage at home since 2001, compiling a 73-20 mark at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (0-0)
-- Wright State will be the last team to tip off the 2008-09 season when the Raiders travel to Evansville for a 5 p.m. ET contest this Saturday. UIC opens the season the same day, but the Flames will play two hours earlier.

-- WSU is 38-28 in Horizon League play the last four seasons. During the previous four seasons, the Raiders were 20-42 in conference games.

-- Wright State has advanced to the championship game of the Horizon League tournament twice in the last four years. WSU was runner-up in the tourney in 2005 and last season.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (0-1)
-- Youngstown State's 95-58 loss to Kent State was the Division I head coaching debut of Cindy Martin, who comes to YSU after winning multiple conference championships at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

-- Freshmen Macey Nortey and Camisha Alexander each scored in double figures in their first collegiate game last weekend. Nortey had 13 points, while Alexander had 11. The last Penguin freshman to score in double digits in her debut was 2001 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year Jen Perugini.

-- Three of YSU's five starters in the opener were playing in their first Division I basketball game. Macey Nortey and sophomore walk-on Makala Gasparek started in the backcourt, while JUCO transfer Jaquetta Westley started at forward. In all, six Penguins made their Division I debut.
