HORIZON LEAGUE HEADLINES

1. Loyola's Maggie McCloskey scored 35 points and hit nine 3-pointers on Dec. 18 against Central Michigan. It stands as the highest scoring performance for any Horizon League player this season.

2. Valparaiso's 78-54 loss at South Dakota State on Dec. 21 was the Crusaders' third straight game against a ranked opponent.

3. Milwaukee's Traci Edwards leads the Horizon League with 19.0 points per game. Cleveland State's Kailey Klein is second at 18.9.

HORIZON LEAGUE NEWS AND NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (4-6)

  • Junior Melanie Thornton and senior Lade Akande form the Horizon League's top rebounding duo. Thornton leads the conference with 8.8 boards per outing, while Akande ranks seventh at 6.8.
  • Sophomore Brittany Bowen led Butler with 18 points in the Bulldogs' 66-63 loss to Indiana State on Dec. 22. She shot 4-for-8 from 3-point range in the contest.
  • Butler's 86-81 double-overtime win at Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 13 was the program's first 2OT win since Feb. 1, 1996 against UIC.
  • The Bulldogs are second in the Horizon League turnovers per game (15.9) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.9). UIC leads the League in both categories.

    CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (5-6)

  • Cleveland State improved to 3-1 at home with an 80-61 win over Niagara on Dec. 21. The Vikings have won 12 of their last 18 contests at the Wolstein Center.
  • Junior Kailey Klein made all 26 of her free throw attempts last week, including a 14-or-14 effort against Niagara.
  • Kailey Klein scored 30 points at Ohio State on Dec. 15. The performance was her sixth career 30-point game, which is the most in CSU history.
  • CSU forced a season-high 32 turnovers in its victory over Niagara.

    DETROIT TITANS (4-6)

  • Detroit went 2-0 last week, defeating Morehead State (60-54) and Eastern Michigan (76-75). The victory over EMU was a double-overtime contest, the Titans' first double-overtime game since 1983.
  • Six Titans scored in double digits against Eastern Michigan, led by freshman Talicia Washington with 14.
  • Senior Brigid Mulroy had a career-high 22 points against Morehead State on Dec. 17. She also had a career-best five 3-pointers.

    GREEN BAY PHOENIX (8-2)

  • Green Bay responded after two straight home losses with a 68-56 win at Marquette on Dec. 20. The win made the Phoenix 8-2 for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
  • The Phoenix's 4-0 road start is the best since the 1987-88 season, when the team started 5-0 at home. That season was also Green Bay's first as a member of NCAA Division I.
  • Senior Rachel Porath surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career, reaching the milestone in the first half against Marquette. She became the 25th Phoenix player to total 1,000 points.
  • Green Bay is holding teams to 52.8 points per game, by far the best mark in the Horizon League. Opponents are shooting just 22.8 percent from beyond the arc against the Phoenix.

    LOYOLA RAMBLERS (5-4)

  • Loyola has just one non-conference game before League play, a 7 p.m. ET tip at Dayton Tuesday night. Regardless of the result, Loyola will enter Horizon League play with at least a .500 record for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
  • Junior Maggie McCloskey leads the nation with 3.7 made 3-pointers per game. She is also 15th in the country in downtown shooting percentage (.471).
  • Maggie McCloskey's 35-point effort against Central Michigan on Dec. 18 was Loyola's first 35-point performance since Dec. 2, 1987. McCloskey was also just three points shy of the Ramblers' single-game record.
  • Junior Keisha Collins led Loyola with 11 points in LU's loss at No. 8 Notre Dame on Dec. 20. Collins has scored in double figures in seven of her last eight games.

    MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (4-6)

  • Milwaukee made 13 3-pointers against Central Michigan on Dec. 20, the second-highest total of treys in school history. The Panthers made 14 from beyond the arc against Youngstown State on Feb. 2, 2002.
  • Senior Traci Edwards continues to climb the Milwaukee and Horizon League record books. Edwards is now third in League history with 1,944 points, and she became UWM's all-time leading rebounder (school's NCAA Division I history) with 975 boards.
  • Sophomore Maurika Hickman's buzzer-beater against Central Michigan was the Panthers' first game-winning shot in the last five seconds of a game since Dec. 28, 2006, when Megan Rogers hit a late 3-pointer against Loyola.

    UIC FLAMES (5-3)

  • Freshman Jasmine Bailey led UIC with 16 points and seven rebounds per game last week. She shot 56.5 percent from the floor as the Flames dropped their first two games of the season after a 5-0 start.
  • The Flames shot a season-high 51.6 percent (32-for-62) against Northern Illinois.
  • Following a 24-point outing against DePaul on Dec. 22, junior Jessie Miller now ranks 18th in UIC history with 805 career points.

    VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (4-4)

  • Valparaiso has played three straight ranked teams (Purdue, Notre Dame and South Dakota State) for the first time in school history. The Crusaders had never played more than two ranked opponents before this year.
  • Senior Agnieszka Kulaga scored four points at South Dakota State on Dec. 21, snapping her string of 17 consecutive double-digit scoring performances. Kulaga ranks third in the Horizon League with 17.4 points per game.
  • Senior Launa Hochstetler ranks ninth on Valparaiso's all-time assists list with 261 career helpers, but she took a scoring role in Valpo's game at South Dakota State. Hochstetler scored a career-high 24 points, including 20 in the second half.
  • Valparaiso has played in front of more than 1,000 fans in each of its last seven games. The Crusaders are currently second in the Horizon League with a 1,685 attendance average (all games).

    WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (3-7)

  • Wright State will play its final non-conference game of the season on Dec. 29, as IPFW visits the Nutter Center.
  • Wright State is second in the Horizon League in scoring defense (59.6) and is tied for the conference lead with 10.9 steals per game.
  • Bench players led Wright State in each of its two games last week. Sophomore Tatianna Hall led WSU with 11 points against Cincinnati on Dec. 16, and sophomore Ta-myra Davis led the Raiders with 19 points against Dayton on Dec. 21. Davis' 19 points tied a career high, which was set two years ago when she played at Youngstown State.

    YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (2-8)

  • Youngstown State has shot 40 percent or better in three of its last four games. YSU shot less than 40 percent in the season's first six contests. All three 40-percent efforts have come against Mid-American Conference opponents (Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Akron).
  • The Penguins totaled a season-best 17 assists in their 58-52 win over Akron on Dec. 20. The previous season high was 14, set against Weber State and St. Francis (Pa.).
  • Senior Nikita LaFleur currently ranks second in the Horizon League in both rebounding (8.7) and field goal percentage (.550).
  • Youngstown State will play three road games in seven days after the holiday, beginning with a contest at Toledo on Dec. 30. YSU's League play starts on Jan. 3 at Valparaiso and Jan. 5 at Butler.
