Player of the Week
Abby Scharlow, UW-Green Bay, Senior, Guard, New Albany, Ind.
Scharlow earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Vermont Banknorth Classic Nov. 19-20, as the senior guard led the Phoenix to the championship of the four-team event. Scharlow had game highs of 16 points and nine rebounds in the title game against the host Vermont Catamounts as the Phoenix prevailed, 67-52. In the first round of the tournament, Scharlow led the Phoenix with 12 points in UW-Green Bay's win over Auburn, which was just the second time in team history the Phoenix defeated an SEC squad. For the early start of the year, Scharlow leads the Phoenix with 14.0 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game and 4.5 assists per game.
Other Top Performers
Jackie Closser, Butler, Sophomore, Guard, Alexandria, Ind./Monroe
Closser has run the Butler offense from her point guard position well in her first two collegiate starts. Despite an ankle injury suffered in the second half of Sunday's win over Lewis, Closser scored 13 points, including going 3-of-5 from three-point range. In the team's first two games, Closser has hit five of her 10 trey attempts. Closser's nine points against Kentucky on Nov. 19 was the second-highest total on the team.
Chrissy Dizon, UIC, Junior, Guard, Chicago, Ill./Latin
Dizon tallied a game-high 23 points, including 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, as the Flames dropped a 72-58 decision at the hands of Northern Iowa on Nov. 20. Dizon was 6-for-12 from the field while knocking down her only three-point attempt.
Ciara Henderson, Loyola, Senior, Guard, Burlington, Ky./Boone County
Henderson scored a game-high 20 points as Loyola dropped its 2004-05 season opener at Chicago State last on Nov. 19. After leading the Horizon League in three-pointers last season, Henderson showed off another side to her game against the Cougars, taking the ball to the basket, ending up going 9-for-9 from the free throw line.
Brittney Whiteside, UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, Guard, Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin
Whiteside scored 20 points in a win over Morehead State, 13 of which were scored in the second half.
Jen Perugini, Youngstown State, Senior, Forward, Sault Saint Marie, Ont./St.Mary's
Perugini collected a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds in YSU's season-opening 76-59 win over Saint Louis. It was Perugini's 20th career double-double and she now needs just 172 points to reach 1,000 for her career.
Team Notes and Quotes
Butler Bulldogs (1-1)
Sophomore Ashley Brenden posted a career-high 14 points, including ten in the opening four minutes of the game, in Sunday's win over Lewis.
Freshman Cassie Freeman leads the team in minutes so far this season, averaging 32.5 per game. The Fishers, Ind., product also leads the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg).
Butler travels to Missouri for Saint Louis' annual Thanksgiving tournament, the Billiken Classic. The Bulldogs join the host Billikens of Conference USA, Ohio Valley defending champion Austin Peay, and Alabama A&M in the four-team, two-day tournament field.
Cleveland State Vikings (0-2)
Cleveland State opened the season with a pair of tough losses against Virginia and Iowa State. Junior guard Erin Martin led the Vikings with 14 points against the Cavaliers, while sophomore guard Betsy Bowser scored a career-high 12 points against the Cyclones.
The Vikings host Dayton on Nov. 23 which marks their third game in five days to open the season. CSU then travels to San Marcos, Texas for the Bobcat Classic on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Vikings will face host Texas State and Texas A & M, squaring off for the first time against both teams.
Detroit Titans (0-1)
The Titans will head to Columbus, Ohio, this week to compete in the Wonder/Hostess Buckeye Classic (Nov. 27-28). The tournament will mark Detroit's first in-season tournament since the 2002-03 campaign.
After having visited the Buckeye State for their season opener, the Titans will look to get into the win column when they tangle with Bradley in the tournament opener. Should Detroit defeat the Braves, it is expected to tackle nationally ranked Ohio State for the first time since the 1995-96 campaign in the title tilt.
Queen City native senior Jennifer McGee turned in an impressive showing in her homecoming versus the Bearcats as she chipped in a team-high nine points off the bench.
UIC (0-1)
Senior Amber Washington posted a career-high 14 points against Northern Iowa on Nov. 20.
Freshman Nicole Rinaldi turned in an impressive debut against the Panthers with four points, a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
UIC went 1-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc, extending its streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 23.
Loyola Ramblers (0-1)
Ciara Henderson scored a game-high 20 points as the Ramblers suffered a 76-68 loss to Chicago State on Nov. 19. Loyola will kick offits home opener against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 22.
UW-Green Bay Phoenix (2-0)
UW-Green Bay advanced to its fifth consecutive regular season tournament championship game at the Banknorth Classic and won its fourth tournament title under the guidance of head coach Kevin Borseth with the team's 67-52 win over Vermont Nov. 20. The Banknorth Classic featured three teams that were receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today/WBCA Coaches' Poll (Auburn, UW-Green Bay, Louisville).
In her first action as a collegian, freshman Kayla Groh made good on her first touch on the basketball. The freshman guard drained a baseline three-pointer to help in UW-Green Bay's title win over Vermont Nov. 20.
UW-Green Bay got a big boost from defense in its title run Nov. 19-20 at the Vermont Banknorth Classic. The Phoenix tallied 23 steals while forcing 41 turnovers in the two-game span.
The Phoenix will wrap up its three-game, four-day road swing Monday, Nov. 22 when it heads to Kent State.
UW-Milwaukee Panthers (0-1)
UW-Milwaukee opened up its season with a 74-66 loss to cross-town rival Marquette on Nov. 20. Three Panthers ended the contest in the double-digits including Nichole Drmmond with 16 points, Terri Huff with 14 and Kimberly Becker with 10.
UWM will be back in action on Nov. 23 as it will travel to Chicago to take on DePaul. Next on the slate for Milwaukee will be the Seattle Times Classic in Seattle, Washington Nov. 26-27.
Wright State Raiders (1-0)
Wright State scored the first nine points and hit nine three-pointers in picking up a season-opening 74-58 road win over Morehead State on Nov. 21. Three Raiders scored in the double-digits including Brittney Whiteside who posted 20 points, 13 coming in the second half, while Hammock finished with a career-high 17 off the bench, including a five-of-seven performance from three-point range. Ott added 16, 11 in the final 20 minutes. Danielle Duncan, in her collegiate debut, chipped in 11 rebounds. The nine three-pointers were the most for the Raiders since connecting on nine against UW-Milwaukee on January 9, 1999.
WSU opens the home portion of its schedule this week against IPFW on Wednesday and Ohio on Sunday.
