Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Dejeanette Flournoy, UIC, Senior, Forward, Chicago, Ill./WashingtonSenior forward Dejeanette Flournoy averaged a double-double of 16.5 points and 11 rebounds in two games for UIC this past week, as the Flames went 1-1 in Horizon League action. Flournoy's most impressive performance came in a loss against Wright State on Saturday afternoon, shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field to finish with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Flournoy picked up her second double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. For the season, Flournoy is averaging 9.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game overall and 11.6 points and 9.0 boards in League contests. The Chicago, Ill., native's current field-goal percentage of 55.5 percent (61-for-110) would be a school-record for a single season.
Other Top Performers
Jackie Closser, Butler, Sophomore, Guard, Alexandria, Ind./Monroe
Closser led the Bulldogs to a 1-1 record in League play last week, filling up the statsheet by averaging 14.5 points, eight assists and 5.5 rebounds. Closser hit four three-pointers at UIC Wednesday and followed that performance with 15 points at Youngstown State Saturday. She tied her career high of eight assists in both contests. The 5-5 point guard also pulled down six and five rebounds, respectively. Closser went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the two games and never left the floor, playing all 80 minutes.
Katie Solner, Detroit, Junior, Guard, Birmingham, Mich./Marian
Solner averaged 15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the week as the Titans went 1-1. After recovering from a loss to UW-Green Bay two days earlier, Detroit came back to defeat Loyola in a 49-34 League win.
Ciara Henderson, Loyola, Senior, Guard, Burlington, Ky/Boone County
Henderson averaged 15.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as the Ramblers split a pair of Horizon League road games. Henderson pumped in 17 of her 20 points in the second half, including big three-pointers to extinguish three Cleveland State rallies, as Loyola raced past the Vikings. On Saturday, Henderson was the lone Rambler to reach double figures, scoring 10 points in a loss at Detroit.
Abby Scharlow, UW-Green Bay, Senior, Guard, New Albany, Ind./New Albany
Scharlow and the Phoenix successfully defended UW-Green Bay's national ranking as the senior guard led UW-Green Bay in its 81-52 road win over Detroit Feb. 10. Scharlow went 5-for-6 from long range to post a team-high 17 points while adding a game-high six assists in the win. Scharlow's long-range effort also aided the Phoenix in tallying 15 three-pointers, an effort that is tied for fifth best in the NCAA this season and is tied for second best in UW-Green Bay history.
Nichole Drummond, UW-Milwaukee, Junior, Forward, Kenosha, Wis./Tremper
Drummond enjoyed one of her finest individual weeks as a collegian this past week as she helped UWM to a 1-1 record which included a road, Horizon League victory. On Thursday, the Kenosha, Wis. native led Milwaukee in both scoring (19 points) and rebounding (7 rebounds) to go with two assists, a block, and two steals. Drummond hit 8-of-11 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. On Saturday Drummond came off the bench to lead all scorers with a career-high 24 points while leading UWM to a 69-61 victory at Cleveland State. The athletic forward shot 8-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-3 from three, and 6-of-7 from the line to go with four rebounds and an assist. On the week Drummond averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals while committing zero turnovers while playing 26.0 minutes per game. No. 22 shot an impressive 16-for-21 (76.2 percent) from the floor, 66.7 percent from three-point land and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. Drummond sits second in the League in scoring in league only games, 10th in rebounding and first in three-point field goal percentage.
Whitney Lewis, Wright State, Freshman, Forward, Lynchburg, Ohio/Lynchburg-Clay
Lewis was 6-for-8 from the foul line in scoring 10 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists at Youngstown State. Three days later, she led the team with 12 points, all in the second half, and added eight rebounds, four offensive, along with three assists at UIC.
Jen Perugini, Youngstown State, Senior, Forward,, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.<
Perugini led the Penguins with 15 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in YSU's 0-2 weekly record. She posted double-doubles in both games with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Wright State and 20 points and 15 rebounds against Butler. For the week, Perugini shot 52.2 percent from the floor, including an 8-for-12 performance against the Bulldogs. For the year, Perugini has collected 11 double-doubles, including the last four games.
