THE HORIZON LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT

  • Senior Brigid Mulroy drilled a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to give Detroit a 66-65 win over UIC on Thursday.  She is knocking down trifectas at a .515 clip (50-for-97) this season, which is good for third in the nation.

  • Green Bay's 34 consecutive regular-season wins are an all-time Horizon League record.  The Phoenix's 35 straight regular-season conference victories are also an all-time Horizon League best.

  • Green Bay (16-0) is one of just three NCAA Division I women's teams without a loss.  Connecticut (18-0) is the only undefeated squad with more wins than UWGB.

  • Green Bay is ranked No. 17 in the most-recent Associated Press poll (Jan. 18) and also No. 17 in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll (Jan. 12).  The Phoenix's best all-time ranking of No. 16 came during the 2002-03 season.

  • Green Bay is the first team in Horizon League women's basketball history to go undefeated in regular-season non-conference action (11-0).

  • Youngstown State's Brandi Brown ranks 15th in the nation with 10.8 rebounds per contest.  She is the only freshman to lead the Horizon League in a major statistical category and has collected double-figure boards on nine occasions this season.

      

    HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

    BUTLER BULLDOGS (10-6 overall, 3-2 HL)
  • Head Coach Beth Couture moved into second place on Butler's all-time wins list (115) with a 74-48 decision on Saturday at Youngstown State.
  • Butler is 6-1 at Hinkle Fieldhouse this season.  The Bulldogs are 22-7 in their last 29 Horizon League home games.
  • Butler shot a season-best .537 in Saturday's win at Youngstown State.
  • Senior Melanie Thornton ranks among the League leaders in six categories in conference play.  She places second in scoring (19.6), blocks per game (2.0) and field-goal percentage (.631).

    CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (9-8 overall, 4-2 HL)
  • Senior Kailey Klein is just 57 points shy of breaking Cleveland State's all-time scoring record (1,851 points).
  • Kailey Klein posted 19 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high tying eight assists in Thursday's 81-68 win over Butler.  It was the 11th double-double of her career.
  • Cleveland State registered season highs for points and field-goal accuracy (.534) against Butler.
  • The Vikings recorded a 35-24 scoring advantage in the second half of Saturday's 71-68 victory over Valparaiso.

    DETROIT TITANS (6-10 overall, 4-1 HL)
  • At 4-1, Detroit is off to its best Horizon League start since 2004-05.
  • Senior Brigid Mulroy canned 10-of-14 three-pointers in two wins last week.  Mulroy drilled 5-of-5 from beyond the arc, including the game winner as time expired, on Thursday against UIC.  She then knocked down 5-of-9 on Saturday vs. Loyola.
  • Sophomore Yar Shayok recorded a game-high 18 points against UIC, which marked her ninth double-figure scoring effort of the campaign.  She then yanked down a career-best 16 rebounds vs. Loyola.

    #17/17 GREEN BAY PHOENIX (16-0 overall, 5-0 HL)
  • Julie Wojta scored a total of just 42 points as a freshman in 2008-09 (1.9 ppg).  Through 16 tilts as a sophomore, she has already collected 228 points (14.3 ppg).
  • Green Bay's 74-53 win over Milwaukee on Saturday was its second-largest in its past nine meetings against the Panthers.
  • The Phoenix has won its first 16 games by an average of 19.2 points.  UWGB has only had one single-digit spread in 2009-10 -- a 60-58 win over Wisconsin.

    LOYOLA RAMBLERS (9-8 overall, 3-3 HL)
  • Loyola's nine wins are already more than its total during the 2008-09 season.
  • Senior Keisha Collins leads the League in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2).  She committed just two miscues in 79 minutes on the floor last weekend.

    MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (6-10 overall, 1-4 HL)
  • Milwaukee has been outrebounded in seven straight games for the first time since the first seven games of 2004-05.
  • Junior Lindsay Laur is one of two Horizon League players to rank in the top five for both scoring (4th, 14.4) and rebounding (3rd, 8.9).  She also places second in the conference with six double-doubles.
  • UWM is on a four-game League skid for the first time since Feb. 5-14, 1998.

    UIC FLAMES (7-10 overall, 4-2 HL)
  • Senior Cassie Johnson, who ranks 12th in the nation with 2.8 blocks per contest, became UIC's all-time leading shot blocker (155) on Thursday at Detroit.
  • Junior Briana Hinkle, an Ohio native, recorded a career-high six steals in Saturday's 57-47 win at Wright State.
  • UIC is averaging 6.1 blocks per tilt, which places eighth in the country, and, at this pace, would break the school record for single-season rejections (173 in 1977-78).

    VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (5-11 overall, 2-3 HL)
  • Valparaiso shot a season-best .500 in Thursday's 66-41 win at Youngstown State.
  • The Crusaders recorded 66 and 68 points last week after failing to reach the 60-point plateau in eight consecutive affairs.
  • Freshman Raegan Moore scored a career-high 20 on Saturday at Cleveland State, one game after sophomore Betsy Adams notched career-best 25 at YSU.
  • Freshman Laura Richards dished out 14 assists last week while committing just four turnovers.

    WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (5-10 overall, 1-4 HL)
  • Senior Erica Richardson posted her first career double-double (13 pts/10 rebs) on Thursday against Loyola.
  • Sophomore Maria Bennett has now drilled a three-pointer in 23 straight games.

    YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (0-17 overall, 0-6 HL)
  • Youngstown State held its first halftime lead of the year on Thursday (26-22), but Valparaiso dominated the second half en route to a 25-point win (66-41).
  • The Penguins were without leading scorer, junior Bojana Dimitrov, in both games last week and dressed just seven players.
