Horizon League Player of the Week

Nichole Drummond, UW-Milwaukee
Senior Guard/Forward * Kenosha, Wis.
Drummond led the Panthers to a 2-0 record last week, averaging 19.5 points, four rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She also shot 62.5 percent (15-for-24) on the week, including a school-record 10-for-11 (.909) outing at Butler on Saturday. She finished that game with 22 points. Against Loyola on Thursday, she scored 17 points to go with five rebounds and four assists.

Other Top Performances for the Week Ending February 12

Jackie Closser, Butler
Junior Guard * Alexandria, Ind.
Closser scored a game-high 23 points, including a 12-of-12 performance at the free throw line, in Monday's win over Detroit. Closser went 4-of-8 from the field and added five assists. She played all 40 minutes for the fourth straight game, helping the Bulldogs overcome an 11-point halftime deficit. She also pitched in seven points and four steals in Butler's loss to UW-Milwaukee on Saturday.

Dominique Butler, Cleveland State
Freshman Guard * Milwaukee, Wis.
Butler had a solid week for the Vikings, despite a pair of losses. She scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds on Thursday against UIC and then tallied a game-high 15 points to go along with eight boards and four steals at Detroit on Saturday. For the week, the Milwaukee, Wis., native averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals.

LaShonda Grant, UIC
Junior Guard * Chicago, Ill.
Grant totaled 34 points, three treys, six assists and six steals for the Flames versus Cleveland State and Youngstown State on the road last week. The guard paced UIC with 16 points, netting three three-pointers and three assists against the Vikings on Thursday. Grant also helped the Flames to their fifth consecutive win this season, posting 18 points, three steals and three assists against Youngstown State on Saturday.

Marquise Hanser, Loyola
Junior Guard * Ft. Mitchell, Ky.
Hanser averaged 12 points, 2.5 rebounds and four assists in the Ramblers' two losses last week. She picked up two steals in each game and averaged 37 minutes per game.

Katie Solner, Detroit
Senior Guard * Birmingham, Mich.
Solner became the 16th Titan with 1,000 points on Saturday. She led team with 21 points in loss to Butler on Monday, chipped in 11 points on Saturday and put up eight more points on Thursday for a 10 point per game average for week. Shot 16-of-27 for the week and hit six three-pointers on seven attempts.

Nicole Soulis, UW-Green Bay
Junior Forward * Green Bay, Wis.
Soulis took over the league scoring lead with a 24-point outburst at North Dakota State on Tuesday to go with 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She followed up with 15 points in just 13 minutes against Loyola Saturday. On the 2-0 week for the Phoenix, Soulis averaged 19.5 points per game while shooting 17-of-24 from the floor for a blistering 70.8 percent.

Brittney Whiteside, Wright State
Junior Guard * Columbus, Ohio
Whiteside reached the 1,000-point plateau with seven at Ohio State along with six assists and two steals. She followed it up with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds against Detroit with three assists.

Horizon League News and Notes

THIS WEEK IN THE HORIZON LEAGUE: This week in the Horizon League features ten League contests. To kick off the week, first and second place square off as UW-Green Bay travels to UW-Milwaukee on Monday night, while Youngstown State heads to Cleveland State in the night's only other game. Four more games are scheduled for Thursday with Wright State playing at UIC, Youngstown State begins the Wisconsin swing with UW-Green Bay, Butler heads to Chicago to face Loyola and Detroit makes the trip to UW-Milwaukee. Saturday wraps up the week's action as four games take place: Cleveland State welcomes Loyola to the Wolstein Center, Detroit finishes up in Wisconsin with UW-Green Bay, Butler plays the second half of the Chicago road swing at UIC and Youngstown State takes on UW-Milwaukee.

Butler Bulldogs (12-11; 7-5)
LAST WEEK: The Bulldogs split a pair of contests last week. Butler wrapped up a three-game road trip with a win in Detroit on Monday night, 71-65. The Bulldogs were then downed by UW-Milwaukee, 74-62, on Saturday afternoon.

THREES ARE WILD: Junior Jackie Closser is just two three-pointers shy of tying Butler's career mark of 167 set by Debbie Benziger (1995-98). Closser is also just four treys shy of matching her own single-season three-pointers mark (67 set last season).

THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 70: Butler is 11-2 when scoring 70 points or more this season.

BOEKE INJURED: Senior forward and co-captain Stephanie Boeke is out for the remainder of the season after tearing her left ACL going after a loose ball Monday at Detroit. At the time of her injury, Boeke was in the top 10 in six of the Horizon League's 12 statistical categories.

Cleveland State Vikings (3-20; 1-11)
LAST WEEK: Cleveland State dropped a pair of contests last week. On Thursday night, the Vikings took on UIC and lost 76-52 despite a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds from Erin Martin. CSU faced Detroit on Saturday afternoon and were handed a 78-46 loss at Calihan Hall.

381 AND COUNTING: Cleveland State heads into this week having made a three-point field goal in 381 consecutive contests the longest active run in the nation and the second-longest streak ever. Louisville (394 games) ranks first all-time in NCAA annals, although the Cardinals had their streak come to an end during the 2004-05 campaign. The last time the Vikings failed to drain at least one three-pointer in a game was in a 78-55 loss at Cincinnati on Dec. 17, 1992.

MARTIN LOOKING FOR 1,000: With 11 points on Thursday against UIC, senior guard Erin Martin moved to within 12 points of becoming the 19th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. She already ranks among the top 10 in Cleveland State annals in steals (8th, 191), three-point field goals (8th with 106), free throws made (9th at 244) and games started (9th, 82).

Detroit Titans (11-13; 8-5)
LAST WEEK: Detroit went 2-1 last week with wins over Wright State (55-45) on Thursday and Cleveland State (78-46) on Saturday, and a loss to Butler (71-65) on Monday. The Titans moved up the charts and now stand in fourth place in the loop.

PASQUINZO MOVING UP THE CHARTS: With 183 career three-point field goals, senior Lindsey Pasquinzo is now fourth on the Titan list. Next up is Patrice Martin (1989-93) with 188. Michelle James (1998-02) is the career leader with 217 and Autumn Rademacher (1993-97) is second with 201.

1,000-POINT CLUB: Two Titans have hit the 1,000 point mark this season. Senior Lindsey Pasquinzo tallied her 1,000 point on Jan. 16, while Katie Solner hit the plateau on Saturday. They became the 15th and 16th Titans to reach the milestone.

SCORING FROM EVERYWHERE: Seven different Titans have led the team in scoring this year: Pasquinzo (nine times), Solner (five), Caitie Goddard (three), Shawanna Stubblefield (three) Kelly Jaskot (two), Joanna Cooper (one) and Kandace Evans (one).

UIC Flames (12-11; 8-4)
LAST WEEK: UIC jumped up the standings with two victories last week. On Thursday night, UIC posted a 76-52 victory over Cleveland State. The Flames then traveled to Youngstown State on Saturday, picking up a 68-49 win over the Penguins.

THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE: The Flames have found success on defense this season with League-best marks in steals per contest in the circuit with an average of 11.39 thefts and opponents' three-point accuracy (.288). UIC also has the most assists per game (17.0).

MOVING UP THE CHARTS: With the 68-49 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday, head coach Lisa Ryckbosch earned her 55th victory with the Flames, becoming the second-winningest coach in the history of UIC. She now trails only Eileen McMahon (1990-98) who picked up 89 victories in her time in Chicago.

Loyola Ramblers (3-20; 3-9)
LAST WEEK: Loyola dropped both of its games in Wisconsin last week. The Ramblers gave UW-Milwaukee a run on Thursday night before falling 67-58. On Saturday, UW-Green Bay outscored Loyola 50-21 in the first half on the way to a 92-42 victory. With the two losses, the Ramblers fall to 2-28 all-time on the Wisconsin road trip. Their only win in Green Bay came on Jan. 8, 1990 and the lone victory in Milwaukee came on Dec. 15, 1986.

HITTING THE FREE ONES: Loyola paces the League at the free-throw stripe, hitting 74.0 percent of its attempts. In conference play, the Ramblers have slightly bettered their performance with a 74.2 conversion rate at the 15-foot line. Junior Marquise Hanser paces the team with a League-leading 88.2 percent rate from the line.

STEPPING UP IN LEAGUE PLAY: Senior Danielle Lonie and junior Jenna Real have picked up the pace in League play this season. Lonie has improved from 7.6 points per game in non-conference play to a 14.1 per game average in conference, while Real has improved from 8.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest in non-League play to 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game against Horizon League competition.

UW-Green Bay Phoenix (18-4; 10-1)
LAST WEEK: UW-Green Bay got back to its winning ways with two wins last week. The Phoenix downed non-conference foe North Dakota State, 81-70, on Tuesday night before handing Loyola a 92-42 loss at the Phoenix Sports Center on Saturday.

WINNING LEAGUE GAMES ON THE ROAD: UW-Green Bay has won 13 straight road games in league play over the last three seasons.

PHOENIX BENCH GETTING IT DONE: The Phoenix bench enjoyed extended playing time against Loyola on Saturday, outscoring the visitors 44-42 in the game. Freshmen Kati Harty and Lavesa Glover scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, to set new career highs.

WINNING FOR MANY, MANY YEARS: In the Monday, Jan. 23 edition of USA Today, UW-Green Bay was recognized for having the third-longest streak of winning seasons in women's college basketball. Behind only Tennessee (34) and Louisiana Tech (31), the Phoenix have been over .500 for the past 28 seasons and have already secured its 29th-straight.

UW-Milwaukee Panthers (14-8; 9-2)
LAST WEEK: UW-Milwaukee picked up two victories last week. The Panthers outlasted a tough Loyola squad, 67-58, on Thursday night before earning a win over Butler, 74-62, on Saturday afternoon.

SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT: Saturday at Butler, UW-Milwaukee shot a season-best 60 percent from the field. One reason for that was the high percentage shots in the paint. The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 50-30 on 25-of-34 shooting.

DRUMMOND PICKS UP NUMBER 1,000: Senior Nichole Drummond led the shooting parade, hitting on 10-of-11 shot attempts against the Bulldogs. Her 90.9 percent shooting for the game set a school record, topping 83.3 percent shot by Kimberly Becker (Feb. 27, 2003) and Maria Viall (Nov. 29, 2002).

HANDING OUT ASSISTS: Sophomore Meredith Onson dished out a team season-high nine assists Saturday, almost doubling her previous career-high of five. She is the first Panther to reach eight assists in a game since Jessica Wilhite finished with eight Nov. 29, 2002.

Wright State Raiders (10-14; 6-7)
LAST WEEK: Wright State dropped a pair of contests last week. The Raiders squared off against No. 7/7 Ohio State on Tuesday, falling 79-48. WSU then hosted Detroit on Thursday, dropping a 55-45 decision.

WHITESIDE PICKS UP 1,000: Junior Brittney Whiteside became the 14th member of the 1000-point club February 7 at Ohio State. In four February games so far, Whiteside is averaging a near double-double of 18.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest. She also has 19 assists, including nine at Cleveland State in nearly recording a triple-double (17 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists).

SOCCER PLAYER HELPS RAIDERS: Steph Comisar, who has been the starting goalkeeper for the WSU women's soccer team the past three seasons, has thrived in the starting lineup for the women's basketball squad. Since starting the last eight games, Comisar is averaging 8.1 points per contest after averaging just 2.3 points in 16 games coming off the bench.

Youngstown State Penguins (6-17; 2-10)
LAST WEEK: Youngstown State fell 68-49 against UIC on Saturday in the Penguins only game last week.

FROM BEYOND THE ARC: Junior Kristy Gaudiose needs just nine more three-pointers to reach 100 for her career. She also needs just 11 more to move ahead of Tiffany Adams (1988-93) for ninth place on the YSU all-time three-point list.

SCHLOEMP GETTING IT DONE: Over the last seven games, sophomore Jessica Schloemp has grabbed 80 rebounds for an average of 11.4 boards per game. During the stretch, Schloemp has reached double digits four times with two 19-board games. She now ranks fourth in the circuit in rebounding with 6.7 per contest.
