Other Top Performances for the Week Ending November 20

Ellen Hamilton, Butler
Junior Guard * Greenfield, Ind.
Hamilton connected on five three-pointers, including four in the second half, to post a game-high 19 points versus No. 19 Purdue. Hamilton became the seventh player in Bulldog history to hit 100 career tri-lighters, and also added two assists and two rebounds.

Lindsey Pasquinzo, Detroit
Senior Guard * Shelby Township, Mich.
Pasquinzo tallied 38 points in two games last week, helping UDM to a 1-1 record. She scored a game-high 16 points in Detroit's 75-72 season-opening victory versus Western Carolina and added 22 against Kansas State. She was seven-of-15 from three-point range during the week.

Krystal Hugelier, UIC
Junior Guard * Elmhurst, Ill.
Hugelier scored in double figures in both games last week, leading the Flames with 19 points versus Bradley when she hit three three-pointers and logged two steals. She then posted a game-high 20 points with six steals in UIC's 84-39 victory over Alabama State.

Natalie Berglin, UW-Green Bay
Sophomore Guard * Green Bay, Wis.
Berglin led the Phoenix at both ends of the court in the team's first two games of the year. She scored the Phoenix's first eight points and finished with 15 at Indiana State, then posted a team-high 19 points and five steals and a blocked shot in an overtime victory at Northern Illinois.

Michelle Holmes, Youngstown State
Senior Center * Cincinnati, Ohio
Holmes posted a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds versus Robert Morris to open the 2005-06 campaign. The six-foot-two senior hit five of 13 shots from the field and six-of-nine at the line for the Penguins.

Around the Horizon League

Phoenix thrives on overtime pressure
UW-Green Bay's 73-67 overtime victory over Northern Illinois not only leveled the Phoenix record at 1-1, but continued a trend of success for the team. UWGB is now 4-1 all-time in overtime games during Kevin Borseth's coaching tenure.

Sophomore Kayla Groh was instrumental in the victory, converting a key basket late in regulation and scoring the first six points of the extra session on the way to a career-best 16 points. Groh also had four steals in the victory.

UW-Green Bay is now 34-3 when junior forward Nicole Soulis shoots 50 percent or better from the field, including her eight-of-16 performance against the Huskies. Soulis and sophomore guard Natalie Berglin each scored 19 points on Sunday. The Phoenix was outrebounded 41-22 but forced 32 Northern Illinois turnovers leading to 30 points.

UWGB opened the season with a 98-59 loss at Indiana State, marking setback was the largest for the Phoenix since a 44-point loss to Florida Jan. 3, 2000. The game featured the most points given up by the squad since the team began Division I play in 1987.

Flames hitting from long range
UIC canned eight three-pointers in each of its first two games, with junior guard LaShonda Grant leading the long-range attack with five of those triples. Grant averaged 14.5 points per game in two appearances last week, adding three steals and nine-of-ten accuracy at the free throw line. Senior guard Chrissy Dizon also made half of her shots from the field while picking up four steals to supplement a 14.0 points-per-game scoring pace. Dizon narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points plus nine assists in the season-opening loss to Bradley.

Freshman guard Nicole Muffolet played her first game since undergoing heart surgery last month. Muffoletto pulled down two rebounds and blocked a shot in five minutes against Alabama State.

The Flames play three games in a row at home in the UIC Pavilion before hitting the road against Northern Illinois on Dec. 2.

Titans open with NCAA challenges
Detroit is getting an early taste of what it takes to reach the NCAA Tournament, opening the schedule against two NCAA tourney teams from last season. The Titans edged Western Carolina 75-72 before suffering a 91-55 defeat at Big 12 Conference power Kansas State.

UDM meets another 2005 tourney entry on Nov. 30 when defending Mid-American Conference champion Bowling Green comes to Calihan Hall.<

Senior guard Lindsey Pasquinzo has picked up where she left off last season, averaging 18 points per game in her first two outings of the year. The preseason All-Horizon League selection led the Titans in scoring in each game, posting back-to-back double-figure performances including a 22-point showing at Kansas State.

Newcomers making mark for Panthers
A freshman has led UW-Milwaukee in scoring in each of the team's first three games this season. Turquoise McCain topped the team with 14 points in the opener at Oklahoma to become the first freshman in the team's Division I history to pace UW-Milwaukee in a season-opener.

Traci Edwards had scoring honors in the next two games with 19 points versus Oakland and 11 at Iowa. She also currently stands third in the League, averaging 7.3 rebounds per game through the first week and a half of the season.

The Panthers received double-double efforts in both of their games last week, with senior guard Molly O'Brien posting 14 points and ten rebounds against Oakland and Edwards adding 11 boards to her point total at Iowa. Edwards also had nine caroms in Friday's overtime triumph.

The victory over Oakland was the sixth overtime home game in UW-Milwaukee's Division I history.

Bulldogs continue long-range shooting
Butler ranked eighth in the nation last season, averaging 7.3 three-point field goals per game while setting a school record with 204 triples. The Bulldogs picked up right where they left off in the team's season-opener Friday when BU hit ten of 18 attempts behind the arc. Junior guard Ellen Hamilton had five of those six tri-lighters, finishing with 19 points.

Senior co-captain Stephanie Boeke had a game-high eight rebounds against the Boilermakers, including five of the team's 18 offensive rebounds. Butler outrebounded the Big Ten Conference representative, 31-30, and outscored Purdue 39-38 in the second half but could not overcome a 47-20 halftime margin.

Purdue shot 59 percent from the field and also forced 26 Butler turnovers.

Vikings can't answer challenge at Wisconsin
Cleveland State dropped its opener (84-59) at Wisconsin on Sunday, shooting 37 percent from the field. The Badgers outrebounded CSU 45-35 and Cleveland State committed 23 turnovers.

Freshman guard Dominique Butler paced the Vikings with 14 points, three rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes off the bench. Butler split ten shots from the field and hit four of five free throw attempts. Junior guard Betsy Bowser also reached double figures with ten points. Senior forward Erin Martin and junior forward Nicole Thomas each grabbed seven rebounds for the Vikings.

CSU's early-season schedule takes another step Sunday when the Vikings host perennial national power Connecticut on Sunday evening. That provides an interesting contrast, as Cleveland State opens the week versus Division II entry Hillsdale College on Wednesday.

Raiders start slowly but fight back
Wright State fell behind 16-0 in its 2005-06 debut at Virginia before battling the Cavaliers on nearly even terms the rest of the way. WSU was outscored only 58-56 after that early barrage.

The Raiders shot 57 percent from the field in the second half, winning the battle after the break by a 34-32 count.

Junior guard Brittney Whiteside led the way for Wright state with 15 points while sophomore center Alicia Avery had 14 points and 12 rebounds in her first action as a Raider. Senior forward Tyanda Hammock chipped in with 13 points, 11 coming in the second half.

The game at Charlottesville, Va., was the first for Wright State against an Atlantic Coast Conference foe since Nov. 29, 2002, when WSU played at Florida State. Those teams could meet again this weekend when the Raiders visit Tallahassee, Fla., for FSU's Seminole Classic.

Penguins go cold but can't overcome Robert Morris
Youngstown State made only five of 25 shots (20 percent) from the field in the second half of its opener, falling 68-60 at Robert Morris. Senior center Michelle Holmes had a career-high 16 points and seven rebounds for YSU.

Junior guard Kristy Gaudiose had 11 points in her season debut, hitting a trio of three-point field goals. Gaudiose now has 47 tri-lighters in her Penguin career.

Friday's game at Indiana carries a little added significance for YSU coach Tisha Hill. In addition to determining the team's opponent for Saturday's second-round action in the Hoosier Classic, the game marks Hill's first meeting with her alma mater. Hill earned her bachelor's degree in sports management from IU in 1993 and a master's degree in kinesiology in 1995. As a player, she led the Hoosiers to a runner-up finish in the 1992 WNIT.

Ramblers struggle in early action
Loyola has lost its first two games by a combined 66 points, falling to Illinois (79-39 on Friday) and Illinois State (82-56 on Sunday).

The Ramblers actually outrebounded their two opponents by a composite 66-64, but committed 69 turnovers in the two games. Loyola had 36 miscues versus the Fighting Illini and 33 more at ISU, spoiling the efforts of junior guard Marquise Hanser.

Hanser, who averaged just 5.0 points per game a year ago, scored a career-high 25 on Sunday. She hit nine of 15 shots from the field including five three-pointers, two days after a 20-point performance which included four triples versus Illinois.

Loyola coach Shannon Reidy's quest for her first collegiate victory continues Tuesday when the Ramblers host Dayton.
