Player of the Week
Katie Solner,Detroit, Junior, Guard, Birmingham, Mich./Marian
Junior Katie Solner turned in a magical week as she led the Titans to a perfect 3-0 mark with all three victories coming on the road, a place where Detroit had gone 0-5 entering play at Loyola. Having to assume more of a scorer's mentality with the absence of junior starter Joanna Cooper, Solner averaged a team-high 16.3 points while connecting on 52 percent of her shots from the field, including marks of .364 and .750, respectively from beyond the arc and at the free throw line. She also pulled down 3.0 rebounds per contest while leading the Titans in assists (3.3) and steals (3.7).
Solner posted 14 points in a 62-56 victory over Loyola, 19 against IPFW and 16 in a 70-60 win over Cleveland State.
Other Top Performers
Maria Marchesano, Butler, Senior, Guard/Forward, Fort Wayne, Ind./Elmhurst
Marchesano averaged 13.5 points per game in two outings for Butler last week. The 5-foot-10 guard posted a team-high 16 points in Monday's loss to UW-Milwaukee, including 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Getting her second start of the season Saturday, Marchesano once again shot 50 percent from behind the arc, tossing in 11 points, one off Butler's pace.
Erin Martin, Cleveland State, Junior, Guard, Canfield, Ohio/Canfield
Martin started the week by matching her career scoring high and ended it with her first career double-double en route to averaging 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists. In Monday's win over UIC, she tied her career-high with 25 points and added six rebounds and four assists. She then scored a game-high 18 points at Wright State on Thursday. Martin capped off the week with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against Detroit for her first double-double. She came close to her first triple-double, adding seven assists.
Krystal Hugelier, UIC, Sophomore, Guard, Elmhurst, Ill./York
Hugelier shot a blistering 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from beyond the three-point arc, as the Elmhurst, Ill., native helped propel the Flames to a 1-1 record this past week. Hugelier knocked down a career-high six three-pointers on Thursday evening and finished with 18 points to lift UIC to a 56-48 triumph over Youngstown State. Earlier in the week, Hugelier drained three treys and dished out a career-high six assists in a 75-68 loss to Cleveland State on Monday evening. For the season, Hugelier is averaging 12.9 points per game and is shooting 37.1 percent (36-for-97) from three-point range. In conference play, Hugelier is pouring in 10.7 points per contest and is shooting 50 percent (10-for-20) from beyond the arc.
Tiffany Mor, UW-Green Bay, Senior, Forward, Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran
Mor and the Phoenix made a statement last week in Horizon League action, as the senior forward led the team in scoring and rebounding in its 3-0 week against conference foes. Mor started off the week in aiding the Phoenix to its 69-54 win over Wright State Jan. 3, notching team bests of 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Against Butler Jan. 8, Mor posted team bests of 13 points and seven rebounds in UW-Green Bay's 59-39 road win over the Bulldogs. At Loyola two days previous, Mor just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds and aided in the defensive effort with three blocked shots and four steals. For the week, Mor and the Phoenix posted a plus-17.3 scoring margin and held opponents to 49.3 points per game.
Molly O'Brien, UW-Milwaukee, Junior, Forward, Columbus, Wis./Columbus
O'Brien enjoyed one of her finest weeks at UWM while leading the Panthers to a pair of Horizon League road victories. The junior scored a career-high 24 points while making 10-of-14 shots and four-of-six three-pointers in Milwaukee's 76-49 victory at Butler on Monday. In addition to her 24 points, the Horizon League steals leader added six rebounds, an assist and five steals. On Saturday O'Brien showed her complete game by scoring eight points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals while the Panthers posted a 72-62 win over Loyola in Chicago. For the week O'Brien averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 4.0 steals while shooting 50 percent (13-26) from the field and six-of-13 from the three point line.
Jeanette Woodberry, Wright State, Sophomore, Guard, Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King
Woodberry posted 12 points with four assists, three steals and two rebounds at UW-Green Bay. She then went on to chip in six points and six assists against Cleveland State. Against Youngstown State, Woodberry went 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, in scoring 15 points and adding five rebounds and three steals.
Jen Perugini, Youngstown State, Senior, Forward, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Mary's
Perugini averaged 12 points and 10.5 rebounds per game last week. She recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds against UIC and grabbed 10 rebounds against Wright State. Perugini also became the 16th player in YSU history to score at least 1,000 points in a career and now ranks 15th all-time with 1,014 career points.
Notes and Quotes
Butler Bulldogs (5-8, 0-3)
With five rebounds against UW-Green Bay Saturday, senior Cortney Urquhart moved into 10th place on Butler's career rebounding list with 547.
Sophomore Ashley Brenden played a career-high 37 minutes Saturday against UW-Green Bay and pulled down nine rebounds, one shy of her personal best.
Wednesday's game at Hinkle Fieldhouse against IUPUI is the team's last non-Horizon League game of 2004-05.
Cleveland State Vikings (2-12, 1-3)
Junior guard Omega Harrington has stepped up her play as of late, averaging 15.3 points in the last three contests including a career-high 20 points in Monday's win over UIC. She had averaged a modest 4.3 points in her first three games as a Viking after becoming eligible on Dec. 19. She transferred to CSU from Duquesne in January 2004.
The Viking bench has continued to improve as the season progresses. The CSU reserves have contributed 26.5 points per game in the last six contests. In the first eight games, the bench averaged just 14.4 points.
Detroit Titans (6-8, 3-0)
The Titans will attempt to register their first 4-0 Horizon League start since the 1996-97 campaign when the squad welcomes Wright State to Calihan Hall on Thursday. The Raiders have been a thorn in the side of the Red, White and Blue during the last two seasons as they have won three of the last four meetings by a combined eight points.
The Raiders have found life rough on the road versus Detroit as the Hunter Green and Gold are 3-8 all-time in the Motor City.
Junior Lindsey Pasquinzo surpassed the 600-point plateau for her career versus Cleveland State as she tallied 12 points to push her career total to 604. Not far behind is Solner with 599 career points.
Pasquinzo is now three three-pointers from moving into seventh place in school history.
After missing the first two games last week, junior Joanna Cooper turned in a strong effort versus the Vikings as she tallied 13 points off the bench.
After beginning the campaign at 1-7, the Titans have now won five of their last six contests, and are only a full-court buzzer-beater at Western Michigan on December 22 from having a six-game winning streak.
UIC (4-10, 1-2)
Junior point guard Chrissy Dizon narrowly missed a triple-double against Youngstown State with nine points, seven assists, while grabbing a game-and career-high 12 rebounds.
UIC knocked down a season-high 11 three-pointers against Youngstown State. Their previous high of eight was set earlier in the week against Cleveland State.
UIC emerged victorious over Youngstown State on Thursday evening, despite converting a season-low 17 field goals, 11 of which were three-pointers.
Loyola Ramblers (4-11, 1-3)
The Ramblers are in search of their second League win as they will travel to Youngstown State on Jan. 12 and host Cleveland State on Jan. 15.
UW-Green Bay Phoenix (12-2, 4-0)
The Phoenix held Butler to just 15 second half points in UW-Green Bay's win over the Bulldogs Jan. 8, 59-39. In Horizon League play, UW-Green Bay owns a plus-17.3 scoring margin and holding conference foes to just 48.5 points per game.
UW-Green Bay will return home for a mid-week contest against UIC Jan. 12 before a lone road contest against Youngstown State Jan. 15.
In UW-Green Bay's win over Loyola Jan. 6, the trio of Phoenix reserves of Nicole Soulis, Natalie Berglin and Kayla Groh combined for 36 points in the team's 72-55 win over the Ramblers. Soulis led the way with a game-best 16 points while Berglin went 6-9 from the field on the way to a 14-point night. Groh added six points as the Phoenix bench outscored Loyola's reserves 36-19.
UW-Milwaukee Panthers (5-7, 2-1)
UW-Milwaukee went 2-0 on the road last week. The Panthers defeated Butler 76-49 at Hinkle Fieldhoust and then traveled to Chicago to down the Ramblers 72-62. UWM will host Cleveland State on Jan. 13 before jumping into non-conference action against South Dakota State on Jan. 15.
Wright State Raiders (9-6, 3-1)
With the win over Youngstown State, the Raiders matched their entire win total of last season. Wright State has won 10 or more games in a season just once during the last eight years and 11 or more just five times since joining Division I in 1987-88.
It is the fastest to nine wins for WSU since the 1993-94 squad also started 9-6. That team finished with 12 altogether, which is the highest total for the Raiders since the 1987-88 team, Wright State's first in Division I, went 17-11 after starting the year 8-7.
The 3-1 Horizon League record is the best start ever for WSU in conference play. In Wright State's 14 years of league affiliation, the Raiders had started 2-2 five times and 1-3 five times, but never 3-1.
Wright State is now 6-2 at home this season and 20-16 since the start of the 2002-03 season. In the three previous years before 2002-03, WSU compiled a record of 12-26 at the Nutter Center.
The Raiders travel to Detroit Thursday in a key matchup before hosting UIC on Saturday.
Youngstown State Penguins (6-8, 1-3)
Jen Perugini became just the sixth player in school history to score 1,000 career points and grabbed 750 career rebounds. She now ranks fifth all-time with 766 career rebounds.
Senior Tara Fleming needs just one more block to become the third player in school history with 100 blocks in a career.
Freshman Lauren Branson's 79 assists ranks as the fifth-highest freshman assist total in school history.
