THE HORIZON LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT

  • Green Bay won all of its non-conference affairs (11-0) for the first time in the program's 36-year history.
  • Green Bay (13-0) is one of just five undefeated NCAA Division I women's teams.  Georgia (14-0) is the only undefeated squad with more wins than the Phoenix.
  • Green Bay is ranked No. 18 in the most-recent Associated Press poll (Jan. 4) and No. 20 in the latest ESPN/USA Today poll (Dec. 29).  The Phoenix's best all-time ranking of No. 16 came during the 2002-03 season.
  • Green Bay is ranked in the top 50 of every reputable Ratings Percentage Index.  The NCAA is expected to release its first RPI of the 2009-10 season next week.
  • Detroit senior Brigid Mulroy ranks fourth in the nation for three-point percentage (38-for-72, .528).  She is the only Horizon League player in the NCAA's top 10.
  • Youngstown State's Brandi Brown, who is averaging 10.3 rebounds per contest, is the only freshman to lead the Horizon League in a major statistical category.  She has collected double-figure boards on six occasions this season.

      

    HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

    BUTLER BULLDOGS (8-5 overall, 1-1 HL)
  • Butler finished the 2009 calendar year with a 21-10 record (.677).
  • Butler has won six of its last eight games overall.  The Bulldogs went 5-1 in December with their only loss coming in double overtime at #25 Dayton.
  • Butler is shooting .780 at the free-throw line over the last four games.  BU nailed 12-of-13 (.923) on Saturday against Loyola -- its best single-game mark in five years.
  • Junior Brittany Bowen has made 25 of her last 26 (.961) free-throw attempts.

    CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (6-7 overall, 1-1 HL)
  • Senior Kailey Klein scored all 19 of her points in the second half of Monday's 73-61 win over Milwaukee.  The Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year owns 1,704 points in 107 career games.  She is on pace to break Cleveland State's school record of 1,851.
  • Junior Shawnita Garland has reached the 10-point plateau in seven straight contests, averaging 15.4 per outing during that stretch.
  • Shawnita Garland recorded a career-high nine steals on Dec. 29 at Eastern Michigan, which tied for the fourth most in CSU history.  She also added 14 points, a career-high tying seven assists and six rebounds.

    DETROIT TITANS (3-9 overall, 1-0 HL)
  • Detroit snapped a six-game skid against Wright State with a 68-47 win on Sunday.  It was UDM's largest victory over WSU since a 24-point spread on Feb. 24, 2001.
  • Detroit has posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season.  The Titans have not won three straight since March 5-9, 2009.
  • Sophomore Jalesa Jones managed a career-best 17 points in Wednesday's 67-44 victory over Colgate.  She also registered five rebounds and five assists in the win.

    #18/20 GREEN BAY PHOENIX (13-0 overall, 2-0 HL)
  • Green Bay continues to build on its best start in the program's 36-year history.
  • Green Bay is 8-0 on the road for the first time in program history.
  • The Phoenix has won an all-time best 31 consecutive regular-season contests.
  • The Phoenix has won an all-time best 37 straight regular-season conference games.
  • As a team, UWGB leads the Horizon League in 13 of 20 statistical categories.
  • As a team, UWGB ranks in the NCAA's top 20 for six different statistical categories.
  • Green Bay has claimed a Horizon League-best three Player-of-the-Week awards -- senior Kayla Tetschlag (Dec. 7 and Jan. 4) and sophomore Julie Wojta (Dec. 14).
  • The Phoenix has won its first 13 games by an average of 18.0 points.  UWGB has only had one single-digit spread in 2009-10 -- a 60-58 win over Wisconsin.

    LOYOLA RAMBLERS (6-7 overall, 0-2 HL)
  • Loyola leads the Horizon League in three-pointers made (89) and ranks second in three-point percentage (.360).  The Ramblers have knocked down 10+ treys on three occasions this season.
  • Loyola has recorded 49 assists (16.3) while committing just 29 turnovers (9.7) over its past three games.

    MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (6-7 overall, 1-1 HL)
  • Milwaukee ranks first in the Horizon League for field-goal percentage defense (.374).  In 13 games this year, no opponent has shot 50 percent against the Panthers.
  • Milwaukee continues to lead the conference in rebounds per contest (39.1).
  • Junior Lindsay Laur tallied a career-best 22 points on Monday at Cleveland State.

    UIC FLAMES (5-8 overall, 2-0 HL)
  • Sophomore Jasmine Bailey scored a season-high 19 points in UIC's 75-70 win on Monday at Butler.  She also recorded 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
  • Senior Jessie Miller scored 23 points in UIC's 60-51 victory on Saturday at Valparaiso.  It was her second 20-point performance of the campaign.
  • Senior Cassie Johnson has moved into second place on UIC's all-time blocked shots list (143).  She needs just seven more rejections to set the school record.

    VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (4-9 overall, 1-1 HL)
  • Valparaiso posted a 48-39 win over Loyola on Monday.  The 39 points tied for the sixth fewest ever allowed by a Valpo team.
  • Valparaiso has not allowed more than 62 points in its last five games.
  • Junior Kelly Watts posted a collegiate-best 16 rebounds against Loyola.
  • Sophomore Betsy Adams has made at least three triples in five of Valparaiso's six home games this season.

    WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (4-7 overall, 0-1 HL)
  • Wright State will meet its fourth ranked team of 2009-10 on Thursday at Green Bay.  The Raiders have already faced #8 Ohio State, #16 Vanderbilt and #25 Dayton.
  • Sophomore Maria Bennett has drilled at least one three-pointer in 19 straight tilts.

    YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (0-13 overall, 0-2 HL)
  • Youngstown State shot 50 percent for the first time since Feb. 16, 2006, by making 25-of-50 on Monday against #18/20 Green Bay.
  • After out-rebounding just one of their first 11 opponents, the Penguins posted glass advantages of 43-37 against Milwaukee and 28-27 vs. Green Bay.
  • Senior Rachael Manuel scored a career-high 14 points against Green Bay.
  • Freshman Brandi Brown averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds against UWM and UWGB.  She is the only conference player averaging a double-double (11.5 & 10.3).
