HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES
BUTLER BULLDOGS (9-6 overall, 4-0 HL)
Butler's 4-0 start in Horizon League action is the program's best start to a conference schedule since 1995-96. That team started 5-0, went 13-3 in League play and won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament.The Bulldogs have held their last five opponents to 50 or fewer points for an average of 45 points per contest. Butler's 46.2 points allowed in League play is the second-lowest average in the conference.Butler has posted three victories by at least 30 points this season. The 1998-99 squad was the last team to turn in at least three 30-point wins.The BU bench has already outscored its opponents by 214 points (394 to 180) in 2008-09. The leading scorer in eight of Butler's 15 games has come off the bench, while the bench as a whole has accounted for over 41 percent of the team's offense (394 of 958).
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (8-8 overall, 2-2 HL)Senior Dominique Butler became the 21st player in school history to score 1,000 career points on Thursday against Green Bay. She is currently 20th on the all-time scoring list (1,004).Senior Dominique Butler also became just the second player in school history to record 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds and 250 career steals.Cleveland State has held four of its last five opponents to under 55 points. The Vikings allowed just 49 points to Milwaukee in a win on Saturday night.CSU shot a season-high .581 from the field last Monday at Valparaiso. The clip was also the second-highest percentage in school history.
DETROIT TITANS (5-10 overall, 1-3 HL)Four Detroit players cracked double figures in the scoring column vs. Valparaiso on Saturday. Senior Sandi Brown led the way with 16 points, while junior Chanica Hall came off the bench to score 15.
GREEN BAY PHOENIX (11-3 overall, 3-0 HL)Green Bay just finished its longest stretch of games away from home. The Phoenix went 4-1 in road games during the 21-day stretch.With a 62-42 win on Saturday, Green Bay remains unbeaten all-time at Youngstown State (10-0).Sophomore Heather Golden scored a career-high 19 points on Thursday against Cleveland State. She made 7-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from long distance.The Phoenix allowed just 14 points to Cleveland State in the first half. The defensive effort was Green Bay's best in a half this season.
LOYOLA RAMBLERS (5-8 overall, 0-3 HL)Loyola's five-game losing streak is its longest of the season.This marks the second straight season that Loyola has started 0-3 in conference play, but the Ramblers have not started 0-4 since the 1999-2000 campaign.Loyola's 47 points against UIC were a season low.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (6-8 overall, 1-2 HL)Senior Traci Edwards became the Horizon League's all-time leading scorer last week (2,023 points) and the first woman in school, League or state history to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.Senior Traci Edwards collected 23 points and 10 rebounds -- for her 50th career double-double -- on Saturday at Cleveland State. The performance came after registering 21 points and eight boards on Thursday at Youngstown State. The Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year averaged a conference-best 22 points in addition to nine rebounds over two games last week. She made 15-of-26 (.577) from the field and 11-of-14 (.786) from the line.
UIC FLAMES (9-4 overall, 3-0 HL)UIC has started Horizon League action with three consecutive wins for the first time in school history.UIC outrebounded its opponents by nine (73-64) in two Horizon League victories last week and held a 12-board advantage (31-19) on the offensive glass.Freshman Jasmine Bailey shot 61 percent from the field (11-for-18) and 100 percent (3-for-3) from three-point land in the two wins last week.
VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (7-7 overall, 2-2 HL)Saturday's victory over Detroit was head coach Keith Freeman's 250th in 15 seasons at Valparaiso. He is 250-175 all-time at Valpo.Keith Freeman coached his 600th game overall on Thursday at Wright State.Junior Sylwia Zabielewicz came off of the bench to post career highs of 20 points and nine rebounds in the overtime win at Detroit.Senior Launa Hochstetler is just five assists shy of 300 for her career. She leads the League in assists this year (5.0).
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (6-9 overall, 2-2 HL)The Wright State offense exploded for 41 points over the final 13 minutes last Monday at Loyola en route to a season-best 72 for the game. The Raiders went 9-of-18 from three-point range -- their most makes from beyond the arc this season.Wright State suffered through its worst offensive performance since Nov. 17, 2007, with just 41 points at Butler on Saturday.Sophomore Shey Peddy led Wright State with 21 points against Loyola last Monday and 19 points vs. Valparaiso on Thursday.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (2-13 overall, 0-4 HL)Senior Nikita LaFleur averaged 18.0 points and 9.3 rebounds last week. She had back-to-back double-doubles against Milwaukee and Green Bay.Senior Nikita LaFleur nailed all 10 of her field-goal attempts on Saturday against the Phoenix. It was the best shooting day in Youngstown State history and second best in Horizon League history. She also became the first player in the nation to go 10-for-10 in a game this season.Senior Tiara Scott has made 24 consecutive free throws after connecting on 25 straight last year. She ranks third in the conference in that category (34-for-40, .850).Senior Tiara Scott posted her second double-double of 2008-09 with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds against Milwaukee on Thursday. She and LaFleur became the first duo to have double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 1, 2003.
