News From Around the League

Panthers try to add League championship
Milwaukee brings a 11-4-3 record into the League Championship, capturing the regular-season title with a 7-0-1 League ledger. UWM is the top seed for the eighth year in a row but has won the tournament only once (2005) in the last four years.

The Panthers closed the regular season with a 6-1 loss at Texas A&M on Friday, the worst loss since a 7-0 setback against then-No. 1 North Carolina to open the 1995 campaign. That was also the last time Milwaukee surrendered six or more goals in a match.

Friday's setback---UWM's first since Sept. 16---ended an 11-match (8-0-3) unbeaten streak, the third-longest run in school history. Senior midfielder Pam Shipway scored the lone goal for Milwaukee and has recorded at least a point in each of her last four outings. Shipway has three goals and an assist during that run after posting only one goal and one helper in the team's first 14 contests.

Freshman midfielder Nicole Sperl leads the team in scoring with 14 points (five goals and four assists), one ahead of sophomore midfielder Erin Kreuser (three goals and seven helpers).

Junior goalkeeper Erin Kane allowed more than one goal for the first time since Oct. 4, 2006. She still tops the League charts with a 0.69 goals-against average and nine shutouts, giving her a League-record 35 for her career.

Ramblers hope history repeats itself
Loyola won the 2006 Horizon League Championship as the second seed. The Ramblers carry that same post position into this year's summit, climbing to 12-8-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the League with Sunday's 2-0 victory at Wright State.

Sophomore forward Cynthia Morote-Ariza scored both goals, converting a pair of penalty kicks in the second half. She leads the League with 15 goals, seven assists and 37 points this season, and has set Loyola records for goals in a season and a career (24). Morote-Ariza has scored at least one goal in four of her last five contests. For the season, she has played a role in 69 percent of LU's 32 goals.

Loyola and Wright State have each scored 32 goals this season, the most among Horizon League entries. Senior forward Katie Heidenreich has four markers and two assists for the Ramblers, making her one of 12 different players hitting the net at least once for the Ramblers in 2007.

Freshman goalkeeper Colleen Dougherty stopped six shots for the shutout against the Raiders, her sixth clean sheet of the year. She owns a 1.09 goals-against average for the season, including a 0.51 mark in League competition.

In 2006, the Ramblers defeated Youngstown State (3-0), Butler (3-1) and Detroit (2-1) to win the League title and advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2003.

Raiders drop showdown; record has to wait
Wright State split two matches to close the regular season, moving to 12-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the League. The Raiders defeated Valparaiso 1-0 in overtime Friday but fell 2-0 to Loyola on Sunday.

WSU's 12 victories match the school single-season record but the Raiders will have to exorcise some demons to eclipse the current mark. WSU is 0-3-1 in its last four Championship outings and has advanced past the opening round only twice since winning the title in 2000.

Freshman forward Amber Kasmer is tied for third place on WSU's single-season charts with 12 goals (second behind Cynthia Morote-Ariza on this year's League list) and ranks seventh in school history with 27 points.

Junior forward Amy Miller supports Kasmer's output with eight goals and four assists of her own. Kasmer and Miller lead an attack that has scored 32 goals this year, matching Loyola for the most in the League. Miller now ranks ninth on the Raider career charts with 45 points to her credit.

Freshman goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson posted three saves Friday for her seventh shutout of the season. That total ranks third in WSU's single-season annals. Hackerson is second only to Milwaukee's Erin Kane (nine) with those seven clean sheets this season and also with her 0.88 goals-against average.

Bulldogs riding momentum to fourth seed
Butler stands at 9-8-1 overall and claimed the fourth seed for the League Championship based on a 5-3-0 loop ledger. The Bulldogs have won four matches in a row, defeating IUPUI 2-0 on Tuesday before knocking off Youngstown State (2-1 on Friday) and Cleveland State (3-1 on Sunday).

Sophomore forward Carrie Twyman scored three goals in the Bulldogs' tour of northeast Ohio, doubling her season total to six. She hit the net twice against the Vikings for her second multi-goal effort of the year.

Junior midfielder Angie Muir scored a pair of goals against IUPUI and netted the eventual match-winner against Cleveland State. She now ranks third in the League with ten goals and 26 points, while her six assists are tied for third place on that loop chart. Sophomore forward Lindsay Fox has three goals and four assists for ten points.

Sophomore defender Abbie Kaul had the match-winner against the Penguins, her third goal of the year.

Senior goalkeeper Annalise Larkin lowered her season goals-against average to 1.03. She has four shutouts this season following her clean sheet at Youngstown State.

Butler is 9-0-1 when tied or leading at halftime in 2007, but the Bulldogs are winless in six matches when trailing at intermission.

Crusaders make League tournament debut
Valparaiso holds the fifth seed, finishing the regular season 4-4-0 in League play and 10-8-0 overall following a 1-0, overtime loss at Wright State on Friday.

The Crusaders make their Horizon League Championship debut Saturday against instate rival Butler. Valpo won the Mid-Continent Conference tournament in 2005. Butler was also the opponent in Valpo's first League contest when the Bulldogs defeated the Crusaders 2-0 on Sept. 30.

Ten different players have scored goals forValpo, with junior defender Jackie Thomas leading the way. Thomas has four goals and one assist for nine points, with junior forward Kendall Brown and sophomore midfielder Jessie White boasting three goals and two helpers apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Erin Murray has a 1.07 goals-against average wtih 55 saves and six shutouts this season. Murray set a school record with her 70th appearance in net for the Crusaders. Murray also owns the Valpo career record with 20 career shutouts.

Senior defender Courtney Rahrig has started 77 of 78 matches in her career, ranking fourth in school annals in matches played and third in starts.

Valparaiso is 9-0-0 when scoring first this season and has won all seven times the Crusaders have scored at least two goals.

Titans win regular-season finale
Detroit closed the season with a victory and a tie, moving to 4-10-4 overall and 2-3-3 in the League. The Titans rallied for a 2-2 draw at Cleveland State on Friday before erupting for a season-high four goals in a 4-0 victory over Youngstown State on Sunday.

Sunday's triumph ended a school-record eight-match winless streak for the Titans, who had gone 0-4-4 since a 2-0 victory over Green Bay on Sept. 28.

Sophomore forward Emily Kiely scored a pair of goals to give her five for the year. Kiely also set up sophomore midfielder Trina Kochanski's tying marker with less than five minutes remaining at Cleveland State.

Kochanski leads the team with six goals and 13 points, one more than Kiely in each category. Kochanski's point total is ninth-best in the League, while her goal count is seventh-best. Half of Kochanski's goals this season are match-winners.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Fortenerry notched her sixth shutout of the season against YSU. She lowered her season goals-against average to 1.48.

Detroit has played in the championship match in each of the last four years, winning the title in 2004. The Titans' four-year run is tied for the longest of its kind in League history, matching Milwaukee's stretch from 1999-2002.

Phoenix looks for second chance
Green Bay enters the League Championship trying to snap a six-match losing streak. The Phoenix is 2-15-0 overall following a 3-1 loss at Francis Marion on Friday and a 2-1 overtime setback against Winthrop on Sunday. Green Bay finished 2-6-0 in League play during the regular season.

Both of Green Bay's goals last week were the first of the season for the respective shooters. Freshman midfielder Sam Schiro netted her first collegiate marker in the closing minutes at Francis Marion while senior forward Jennie Gorwitz logged her first goal of 2007 to tie the contest against Winthrop.

Senior midfielder Lotte Rasmussen leads the team with four goals and eight points this season. Sophomore defender Amanda Stinson adds three goals for six points.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren logged eight saves at Winthrop, giving her 306 in her career. Wikgren ranks econd in school history behind Laura Sandt (352 from 1994-97) in that department and also ranks among the program's elite in career shutouts and goals-against average.

Saturday's quarterfinal match-up marks the third time in the last five years that Green Bay will meet Loyola in the quarterfinals. The Ramblers posted a 4-2 victory in 2003 and a 1-0 triumph two years ago.

Vikings host opening round
Cleveland State holds the eighth seed and hosts Youngstown State in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship. The Vikings finished the regular season 4-13-1 overall (1-6-1 in the League) following a 2-2 draw with Detroit on Friday and a 3-1 loss to Butler on Sunday.

Junior forward Jennifer Wieand notched a goal and an assist in the two matches, extending her school-single-season scoring records. Wieand now has eight goals and 19 points (fourth-best on the loop charts) this fall, the best marks in CSU's four-year history. Wieand also set a Viking one-year record with 53 shots during the regular season.

Senior forward Shayna Back has six goals and three assists for 15 points. Back and freshman forward Sylvia Olsby combined to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead against Detroit before the Titans rallied for the draw. Back holds Cleveland State's career records with 12 goals and 29 points, although Wieand is just one behind in each category.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly ZInkiewich became the third player in CSU history to log 100 saves in a season. Her career-best 13 stops against Butler give Zinkiewich 111 for the year. The freshman, who has started all 18 matches this fall, carries a 2.50 goals-against average with two shutouts.

Penguins try to end skid
Youngstown State brings a nine-match losing streak into the tournament, falling to 1-17-1 overall (0-8-0 in the League) with a 2-1 loss to Butler on Friday and a 4-0 setback at Detroit on Sunday. YSU travels to Cleveland State for Tuesday's opening-round match, attempting to win a League tournament contest for the first time ever.

Sophomore midfielder Natalie Brady notched her first goal of the season in the 35th minute against Butler, giving the Penguins an early 1-0 advantage. She is the seventh different Penguin to score a goal this year.

Freshman forward Lauren Brennan has eight of the Penguins 14 goals, tying for fourth place on the League charts in that department and ranking fifth with 19 points. Junior defender Carrie Wack has a goal and three assists for Youngstown State with sophomore forward Jordan Gapczynski adding one goal and two helpers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney stopped 14 shots against Butler, keeping YSU in the match despite a 28-8 disparity in shots. It was the fifth time this year Bodzioney has reached double figures in saves. She leads the League with 162 stops, ranking among the national leaders with an average of 9.00 per contest. Bodzioney carries a 2.08 goals-against average for the year.

Seeds not always important
Milwaukee holds the top seed for the eighth consecutive year but the Panthers have won the League Championship only once (2005) in the last four years.

Loyola was the second seed last fall, defeating fourth-seeded Detroit 2-1 in the final to capture the League title and an automatic entry into the NCAA Championship. The Ramblers also won the crown in 2003 despite entering that year's summit as the seveventh seed.

In 2006, sixth-seeded Butler eliminated third seed Wright State in the quarterfinals, outlasting the Raiders 4-3 in penalty kicks. Detroit's 1-0 victory over Milwaukee in the semfinals was the other upset (by seed) last year.

The 2005 tournament featured two upsets in the quarterfinals as fifth seed Butler knocked off fourth seed Wright State 1-0 and sixth-seeded Loyola won by the same score over third seed Green Bay.
