HORIZON LEAGUE NEWS AND NOTES
BULLDOGS END SKID VS. IU: Butler's 2-1 victory at Indiana last Thursday snapped a nine-match winless streak to the Hoosiers, during which time BU went 0-8-1. Junior Molly Kruger scored twice against IU, with classmate Carrie Twyman picking up a pair of assists.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Bulldogs have received help on goals from numerous sources this season. Butler's 15 assists this year have come from nine different players, including a team-high four from Carrie Twyman and two each from Molly Kruger, Lauren Papierski and Sarah Phelps.
WIN STREAK ENDS AT FOUR: Last Friday's win over IPFW allowed Cleveland State to extend its school-record win streak to four matches, but the streak came to an end when CSU fell at Kentucky on Sunday. With consecutive wins over Robert Morris, Ohio, Eastern Kentucky and IPFW, the Vikings recorded their first successive victories in program history. Prior to this period, the best CSU had done was win two out of three matches early last season.
WIEAND CLAIMS SCORING, SHOTS RECORDS: With an assist on Nicole Howard's goal against IPFW, senior Jennifer Wieand became CSU's career scoring leader with 31 points. In addition, her three shots last week allowed her to raise her career total to 122 and break the school record of 119 formerly held by Heather Clapacs. Wieand has career totals of 11 goals and nine assists, leaving her one goal and one assist away from equaling the school records of 12 goals (by Shayna Back) and 10 assists (by Lisa Conway).
STANSKI LEADS UDM IN GOALS: Despite Detroit's 5-1 setback at Michigan State last week, the bright spot for the Titans came in the second half as sophomore Selina Stanski scored her team-high third goal of the year on a penalty kick, which was only the third goal MSU had allowed all season.
LOYOLA LOOKING FOR LEAGUE PLAY MAGIC: Loyola hopes for a repeat of last season, when the Ramblers were able to turn around a 2-5 start, finishing the season 12-4-1 en route to their second straight Horizon League Championship. LU currently sits at 3-7 heading into a pair of home matches this weekend.
`TIS BETTER TO GIVE: Loyola's Cynthia Morote-Ariza, the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year, is tied for 10th in the nation with 0.80 assists per match. No other player on the team has more than two assists. Her eight assists leads the league, while she ranks second in the conference with 16 points.
BEST START EVER AT VALPO: Valparaiso's 7-1-1 start is the best nine-match record in school history. A big reason for the winning start has been junior goalkeeper Mele Cabral, who already has six shutouts this season. Cabral is currently fourth in the nation in save percentage (.927) and seventh in goals-against average (0.32). Valpo has allowed just three goals this season.
NICE TIME TO FIND THE SCORING COLUMN: Valparaiso freshmen Laura Romberg and Becky Clever each scored their first collegiate goals this weekend and both were game-winners. Romberg's tally came with just 2:35 remaining in the Crusaders' 2-1 win versus South Dakota, while Clever's goal came in the 75th minute of Valpo's 1-0 victory over Central Michigan.
DRUSCH APPEARS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS: Green Bay freshman Maddie Drusch is among the country's top statistical goalkeepers, ranking 10th in the nation in save percentage (.894) and 20th in saves per game (7.00). The saves total is tops in the Horizon League.
HAYWARD LEADING GREEN BAY: Sophomore forward Laura Hayward moved to the top of Green Bay's offensive statistics with her second goal of the season and first career game-winner against Oakland last Sunday. Hayward leads the Phoenix with five points on two goals and one assist.
PANTHERS APPEAR IN THE RANKINGS: Following a strong 7-1-2 start, Milwaukee currently stands on the cusp of the national rankings, as the Panthers are listed among teams receiving votes in this week's NSCAA/adidas poll. Milwaukee owns a No. 7 rankng in the Great Lakes region.
HAGEN AMONG NATION'S BEST: UWM freshman Sarah Hagen, who has twice as many goals as any other Horizon League player, is one of four players nationally to already have at least 10 goals. She is tied for ninth in the country in goals per game (1.00) and 18th in the nation in points per game (2.10).
KASMER LEADS WRIGHT STATE OFFENSE: Wright State sophomore Amber Kasmer notched her second multi-goal game of the season last weekend in WSU's 3-0 win over Duquesne. Kasmer now has four goals on the season and 16 tallies for her career at WSU.
HACKERSON CLIMBS SHUTOUT LIST: Raider goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson posted her third shutout of the season last Sunday against Duquesne. The sophomore Iowa native has played every minute in net for the Raiders this season and for her career now has 10 shutouts, which ranks fifth on Wright State's all-time list and is only eight away from third place.
SNYDER SAVES: Youngstown State freshman goalkeeper Mariah Snyder collected 11 saves last weekend and now leads the Horizon League with 54 saves this season. She also owns the league's top mark in saves per match (6.75) while her .818 save percentage is good for fourth in the league.
