NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE HORIZON LEAGUE

BUTLER AT ITS BEST IN SIX YEARS: Butler finds itself in a three-may tie for first in the league standings at 4-1, which is the team's best conference start since the 2002 team was also 4-1. Overall, the Bulldogs' 9-6-0 mark is the program's best mark through 15 matches since the 2002 season, when the Bulldogs began the year at 11-4.

BULLDOGS SHUTTING DOWN OPPOSITION: BU has allowed just three goals in its first five Horizon League contests, its best five-match defensive stretch since 1999. Butler has recorded shutouts against Valparaiso, Youngstown State and Loyola in conference play. The Bulldogs also held Detroit scoreless for 84 minutes before allowing a pair of late tallies.

ALREADY A RECORD SEASON FOR CSU: Cleveland State's 2-0 win against IUPUI last Sunday was the team's fifth victory this season, tying the school record set last year. The Vikings have at least five matches remaining this season, with at least one of those contests at home.

SAUNDERS STEPS UP FOR VIKINGS: With starting goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich unable to play due to injury, Shannon Saunders has minded the net for Cleveland State during the last three matches. The team's 2-0 win over IUPUI was Saunders' first career shutout.

FORTENBERRY TO RETURN FOR UDM: Detroit senior goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry, who suffered a knee injury last summer, has been cleared to return this week for the Titans. Fortenberry started 18 contests in goal last season, placing fourth in the Horizon League in shutouts (6), saves (95) and saves per game (5.00).

ROFFEY FIRST TALLY HELPS TITANS TO WIN: Freshman Lauren Roffey scored her first career goal in the 70th minute of Detroit's 2-1 victory over Valparaiso last weekend.

LOYOLA'S STREAK SNAPPED: Prior to last Sunday's double-overtime loss at Butler, Loyola had won six straight matches, outscoring opponents 13-2 over that stretch. The six-match winning streak tied the longest skein in Rambler history, which was set last season.

MOROTE-ARIZA APPEARS IN NCAA RANKINGS: Loyola junior Cynthia Morote-Ariza recorded a goal and an assist in three matches last week, making her the first player in the nation to be credited with 15 assists. She currently stands second in the Horizon League in points (33) and points per game (1.94). Morote-Ariza had scored at least one point in seven consecutive contests prior to the Ramblers' 1-0 loss at Butler last Sunday.

VALPO DOMINATED NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: Valparaiso went 8-1-1 in non-Horizon League action this season, the best mark in school history. The Crusaders also went 6-1-0 in non-conference home contests.

CABRAL SETS SHUTOUTS RECORD: Valpo goalkeeper Mele Cabral posted her seventh shutout of the season in the Crusaders' 2-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville last Sunday, setting the school record for blankings in a season.

DRUSCH APPEARS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS: Green Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch made 20 saves in three matches last week, and the freshman now ranks 16th in the nation with 7.18 saves per contest. Her total of 79 saves is second in the Horizon League.

PANTHERS APPEAR IN THE RANKINGS: Milwaukee, now 12-2-2 after posting a pair of shutouts last week, currently appears in several of women's soccer's national polls. Here is a breakdown of where Milwaukee is ranked this week:

NSCAA/adidas:.......................... No. 22 (No. 2 in Great Lakes Region)
Soccer America:........................ No. 25

Soccer Times: ..........................No. 27 (RV)

HAGEN AMONG NATION'S BEST: UWM freshman Sarah Hagen, this week's Horizon League Women's Soccer Player of the Week, is one of just two players in the nation with 16 goals. She is ranked fifth in the country in goals per game (1.00) and tied for 10th in the nation in points per game (2.13). She added to those stats last weekend, recording two goals in each of Milwaukee's victories last week.

KASMER SCORING IN BUNCHES AT WSU: Wright State sophomore Amber Kasmer scored twice in the second half of WSU's 3-0 win over Green Bay last weekend. She has three multi-goal performances this season and six in her career.

SNYDER SAVES: Youngstown State freshman goalkeeper Mariah Snyder stopped 14 shots last weekend and now leads the Horizon League with 105 saves this season. Snyder's average of 7.50 saves per game leads the Horizon League and ranks 11th in the nation.
