Player of the Week

Sarah Teegarden, UW-MilwaukeeSophomore * Midfielder * Batavia, Ill.
Teegarden led the Panthers to a 2-0 record last week, scoring the game-winning goal in both contests. Friday, she provided all the scoring in a 1-0 win over Detroit giving UWM a perfect 7-0 League mark and home-field advantage for the League Championship. Then, she scored the game's lone goal against Wisconsin on Sunday, helping the Panthers to just their second win over the Badgers ever. She has now scored the game-winner in three-straight games, the first Panther ever to do so, and tied a school record with her fifth game-winner of the season.

Other Top Performances from the Week Ending Oct. 22

Stephanie Gross, UW-Green Bay
Senior * Forward * Fond du Lac, Wis.
Gross tied UW-Green Bay's team record for goals in a game with four scores against Cleveland State Oct. 20. It was her third multi-goal game of the year and second in three games. She now has 13 goals and 32 points this season, as she is just the third player in team history to tally 30 or more points in a season.

Shayna Bäck, Cleveland State
Junior * Midfielder * North Olmsted, Ohio
Bäck picked an opportune time to break out of an offensive slump, scoring a pair of second-half goals against IPFW to lead CSU to its third win of the season. Her 14 points this season break a Viking record and snapped an eight-match scoring drought. Bäck ranks among the Horizon League leaders in goals (6) and points (14), despite entering the season having never scored a point in 34 career games.

Steph Comisar, Wright State
Senior * Goalie * West Chester, Ohio
Comisar pushed her scoreless streak to 286:19 with her third consecutive shutout, two coming this week. Comisar made two saves in the Raiders 2-0 victory over IPFW on Friday night and was forced to make only one save in the 2-0 win over Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon. She upped her season total to eight shutouts bringing her career total to 23.

Cynthia Morote-Ariza, Loyola
Freshman * Forward * Chicago, Ill.
Morote-Ariza continued her assault on the Loyola record book, scoring two goals in two matches to set the Loyola single-season record for points in a season. Morote-Ariza opened the week with an exquisite 20-yard hit into the upper-90 in the 82nd minute in a 1-1 draw with Northwestern before setting the record on Sunday with a first-half tally against IUPUI. Morote-Ariza's total of 24 points (nine goals, six assists) surpassed the previous mark of 22, set by Melissa Eckerle in 1996.

Allie Bullard / Shelley Marick / Melanie Slusher / Jenny Whaley, Detroit
The Titan back line kept UWGB off the board in a 1-0 Detroit win on Sunday in Green Bay. The defense, along with goalie Katie Fortenberry, which has given up just 17 goals in 17 games, posted the team's fifth shutout of the season, in helping Detroit to its fourth League win of the year.

Carrie Twyman, Butler
Freshman * Forward / Midfielder * Avon, Ind.
Twyman scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory over Youngstown State on Friday. On the season, she has found the net three times and has totaled seven points.

Horizon League Notes

UW-Milwaukee (15-2-1; 7-0-0 HL)
The Panthers used a pair of Sarah Teegarden game-winners in 1-0 victories over Detroit and Wisconsin to push their winning streak to a school-best 10 games.

It was a week of broken records all around for UWM as sophomore goalkeeper Erin Kane came up with two more clean sheets, giving her 12 on the season and a League-high 25 in her 37-match career. She now owns a 0.43 goals-against average on the season and hasn't allowed a goal since Oct. 4 against UW-Green Bay.

Against the Titans on Friday, UW-Milwaukee held a 17-5 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The team's goal would come off one of the corner kicks as Beth Steuer knocked a ball to the far post that Teegarden headed in.

Teegarden used her head again in Sunday's victory over Wisconsin, this time with the feed coming from Kate Megna.

The two game-winning goals makes the sophomore midfielder the first player in UWM history to net three-consecutive game-deciders. She also tied a Panther record with five on the season.

UW-Milwaukee is idle until the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship. The team will host either Youngstown State or Cleveland State, depending on the outcome of Wednesday's contest.

Loyola (11-5-3; 5-1-1 HL)
The Ramblers went 1-0-1 last week with a 3-0 victory over IUPUI on Sunday and a 1-1 draw against Northwestern on Friday.

Loyola fell behind in the first half as the Wildcats found the net in the 31st minute. It would stay that way until the 81:13 when freshman Cynthia Morote-Ariza blasted a 20-yard shot into the upper right corner.

LU picked up its school-best 11th win of the campaign on Sunday, with senior Mary Dale (two goals) and Morote-Ariza (one goal) providing the fire power. With the two markers, Dale has second-most goals in Rambler history with 23 in her career (Melissa Eckerle, 27).

Morote-Ariza has made her mark during her rookie year. She has a Loyola-record 24 points (nine goals, six assists), topping Eckerle's 22 points in 1996.

The Ramblers travel to Lincoln, Neb. for a Wednesday match-up with Nebraska, then wait until Saturday when they will host a quarterfinal contest against Youngstown State or Cleveland State.

Detroit (8-9-0; 4-2-0 HL)
Detroit split a pair of contests in Wisconsin last week, falling 1-0 at UW-Milwaukee on Friday before capturing its fourth League victory of the season Sunday with a 1-0 victory over UW-Green Bay.

The Titans were unable to crack the UWM defense as the team was out-shot 17-5 in Friday's setback.

UDM got back on track on Sunday as the defense and netminder Katie Fortenberry locked down the Phoenix attack. Fortenberry turned away eight shots in the contest for her fifth shutout of the campaign. The offense was provided by senior Mary Parker, who headed a Liz Hardy corner kick into the back of the net in the 82nd minute for the game's only marker. Parker now has 33 points on the season, just three away from her career high of 36 in 2004.

With the victory over UW-Green Bay, the Titans have clinched a home game in the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Championship on Saturday. UDM will finish the season seeded third or fourth, depending on the result of Wednesday's contest at Wright State.

UW-Green Bay (8-6-2; 3-3-1 HL)
The Phoenix had a rollercoaster 1-2-0 week. The team lost 5-0 to Marquette Tuesday, won 4-0 over Cleveland State Friday and dropped its first home game of the year, 1-0, to Detroit on Sunday.

UW-Green Bay was out-shot 24-5 in Tuesday's loss. Goalies Brooke Wikgren and Charla Buxbaum combined for eight saves.

Senior Stephanie Gross provided all the Phoenix offense for the week in Friday's victory over Cleveland State. Gross found the back of the net four times, tying a single-game UWGB record and becoming just the third player in school history to crack 30 points in a season. The tandem of Wikgren and Buxbaum made three saves in the shutout.

The regular season came to an end on a sour note for UW-Green Bay on Sunday. Although out-shooting the Titans 16-14 and placing four more shots on net, a UDM goal in the 82nd minute was the game's only marker.

Finishing the regular season at 8-6-2, UW-Green Bay is guaranteed its first winning record since 1993. The team has posted three .500 seasons since `93, but has never finished over the mark.

The Phoenix play the waiting game now with their post-season fate in the hands of the Wright State-Detroit contest on Wednesday. If Detroit wins and holds Wright State to one or no goals, then UW-Green Bay will host the Raiders in the quarterfinals on Saturday. If Wright State wins, then UWGB will travel to Detroit on Saturday. In the event of a tie or if the Raiders score two or more goals in a loss, the Phoenix will travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on WSU.

Wright State (11-3-3; 3-2-1 HL)
Wright State picked up 2-0 victories over IPFW (on Friday) and Youngstown State (on Sunday) in its two contests last week.

The Raiders got the offense from Desiree Morris in the week's first match as the junior tallied twice, her fourth and fifth goals of the season. Morris now stands second on the team in points 13 and goals scored. Senior keeper Steph Comisar made two saves in the shutout.

WSU jumped out to an early lead with a Stephanie Habner goal in the 10th minute. Jodie Shoaf added an insurance tally less than nine minutes later off a feed from Jess Rooma. Comisar once again turned in a clean sheet, turning away the only shot on net. She now owns eight shutouts on the season, which places her second in the loop.

This week, the Raiders play Detroit at home for a chance to host a quarterfinal match in the League Championship. If WSU wins the team will be the third seed for the tournament, if the Raiders tie they will be seeded fourth and if the team loses, and scores one or no goals, they will be on the road for the quarterfinal round. In the event the Raiders lose, but score two goals the team will win the tie-breaker and be seeded fourth for the tournament.

Butler (5-9-2; 2-4-1 HL)
Butler finished out League schedule with a 2-0 victory over Youngstown State on Friday.

The Bulldogs got on the board early with Carrie Twyman finding the back of the net in the 13th minute. Freshman Molly Arenberg scored the second marker, the first goal of her collegiate career. Angie Muir added a helper on Arenberg's goal, increasing her team-best point total to 14 (six goals and two assists) this season.

Goalies Kirby Zwickel and Megan Cappa each made three saves in the game as the Bulldogs posted their third shutout of the campaign.

Butler wraps up the regular season with a non-conference match against Indiana State on Wednesday. The team will be the sixth-seed at the loop summit and will take to the road against Detroit or Wright State in the quarterfinals.

Youngstown State (2-13-0; 0-6-0 HL)
The Penguins were pinned with back-to-back 2-0 losses at Butler and Wright State last week.

Youngstown State was out-shot 13-8 by Butler and 16-13 by Wright State. Freshman netminder Caitlin Bodzioney came up with seven saves in each contest. She continues to lead the League in saves per game (7.47) and total saves (112).

Cleveland State hosts the Penguins on Wednesday this week with the seventh and eighth seeds as the League tournament on the line. The winner of the contest will travel to Loyola, while the loser will head to UW-Milwaukee.

Cleveland State (3-15-0; 0-6-0 HL)
Cleveland State was set back 4-0 at UW-Green Bay on Friday before bouncing back with a 2-1 victory over IPFW.

The Phoenix out-shot the Vikings 20-6 in the contest and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Goalies Erin Withrow (five saves) and Ashley Kidwell (three saves) combined for eight saves.

After falling behind 1-0 just 2:21 into the contest against IPFW, CSU buckled down and held the Mastadons scoreless the remainder of the game. Junior Shayna Back gave the team the offensive boost they were looking for with two goals just 95 seconds apart. Assisting on both goals was sophomore Lisa Conway, who now shares the Horizon League-lead with six helpers on the season. Kidwell made the start between the pipes for Cleveland State, making six saves in the complete-game effort.

The Vikings host Youngstown State on Wednesday this week, with the winner taking home the seventh seed for the League Championship. The winner of the contest will travel to Loyola, while the loser will head to UW-Milwaukee.

Valparaiso (12-3-2; joins HL in 2007)
Valpo topped IUPUI 4-1 in its only game last week to tie a program-best with 12 wins. Freshman Sarah Jewell tallied twice in the game, including her second match-winner of the season. Erin Murray made seven saves and now owns a 0.73 goals-against average, which would be a school record.

VU needs just one point in its contest against Southern Utah to capture its first Mid-Continent Conference outright regular-season title.
