News From Around the League

Panthers salvage split in Madison
Milwaukee starts the week at 3-1-0 after splitting two matches over the weekend at Madison, Wis. The Panthers fell 1-0 to Boston University on Friday but rebounded to outlast UC Santa Barbara 1-0 in overtime Sunday.

Freshman midfielder Nicole Sperl recorded her second match-winner of the year with the golden goal Sunday. Sophomore midfielder Erin Kreuser has assisted on each of the Panthers' last three goals and is tied for the League lead with those three helpers.

Milwaukee has out-shot its four opponents by a 75-27 margin, but only owns a 6-2 advantage in goals. Four different players have hit the net for the Panthers in 2007, with sophomore defender Kate Megna, freshman defender Sarah Talbert and sophomore forward Louise Vraney each owning one goal and the Panthers benefitting from an own-goal.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Kane stopped five shots Sunday for her League-record 28th career shutout. Thirteen of those clean sheets have come in overtime matches. Kane leads the circuit with a 0.48 goals-against average, which is slightly better than her career mark (0.54) entering this season.

Milwaukee travels to the home city of one of last weekend's foes this weekend, facing #10/12 Boston College on Friday and Harvard on Sunday.

Crusaders claim local bragging rights
Valparaiso defeated a pair of in-state rivals last weekend, improving to 3-1-0 overall with victories over IPFW (4-0 on Friday) and former Mid-Continent Conference foe IUPUI (2-0 on Sunday).

The two shutouts give Valpo three in the first two weeks of the season and extend the Crusaders' shutout streak to 243:14. The school's single-season shutouts record is six, set in 2004. Senior goalkeeper Erin Murray extended her program career standard to 16 clean sheets Sunday, while lowering her season goals-against average to 0.67. Sophomore Mele Cabral had her first collegiate shutout Friday as the Crusaders did not allow a shot in the first half of that contest.

Senior forward Brittany Derksen notched a goal and an assist over the weekend for her first three points of the season. Freshman midfielder Lynnea Pappas also tallied the first three points of her collegiate career with a goal and a helper against IPFW.

Valpo has spread the wealth in terms of scoring, with seven players accounting for the team's nine goals. A total of ten players have recorded points in the first two weeks of the season.

The Crusaders open a busy week of action Wednesday at Purdue before home matches against Belmont (Friday) and Northern Iowa (Sunday).

Raiders continue road swing
Wright State dropped two of three matches on the road last week, with a 3-0 loss at Ohio State on Tuesday and Sunday's 1-0 setback at Toledo sandwiched around Friday's 4-0 rout of Kent State. The Raiders start the week at 3-2-0.

Freshman midfielder Jen Agueci scored the first two goals of her career against KSU, opening the scoring in the sixth minute and adding a second-half marker. She now ranks sixth in the League with four points this season.

Agueci and junior midfielder Amy Miller are the only Raiders to post multi-goal matches this season. Miller netted a hat trick in the season-opener versus Jacksonville State on Aug. 31 and currently leads the League with four goals and nine points.

Freshmen continue to make an impact on the Raider program. Five rookies have started at least four of the first five matches, with Amber Kasmer adding a goal and two assists, Jenna Cooper netting a goal and Trisha Stevens owning one assist.

The Raiders suffered only their third losing week (1-2-0) under head coach Pat Ferguson. WSU did not have more than one sub-.500 week in either of Ferguson's first two complete seasons at the school.

Wright State faces two more in-state foes this week, visiting Bowling Green on Friday before hosting Cincinnati on Sunday.

Vikings make program history
Cleveland State improved to 2-3-0 after winning two of three road matches last week. The Vikings outscored IPFW 5-4 on Tuesday and came back from Friday's 8-1 loss to Temple with a 3-0 victory at Delaware State on Sunday.

Tuesday's victory marked a pair of milestones for CSU, as the first road triumph and first overtime win in program history. The Vikings had been 0-31-1 away from home and 0-2-1 in extra time during their first three seasons before junior forward Jennifer Wieand's heroics in Fort Wayne, Ind. Her goal with 89 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, and she netted the match-winner 3:09 into the second extra session.

Wieand also scored a goal Sunday, giving her eight points for the week---one fewer than her total in her first two seasons at CSU. She is tied with teammate Shayna Back for second place on the League scoring charts with those eight points, with Back's total featuring goals in each of the Vikings' last three contests. As a team, CSU has scored a League-high 10 goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich logged her first career shutout at DSU. She was forced to make only one save as the Vikings dominated play with a 21-2 advantage in shots.

Cleveland State's four-match road swing ends Friday night at Akron. The Vikings return home to face Canisius on Sunday.

Bulldogs finally open home schedule
Butler dropped its only match of the week, slipping to 1-2-0 following a 1-0 loss at Louisville on Sunday. The Bulldogs held the Cardinals---a team ranked 25th in the nation according to Soccer America---scoreless until the 79th minute but could not sustain the attack.

The Bulldogs have relied on their defense early in the season, including a 1-0 exhibition loss to Illinois last month.

Butler has allowed only five goals in its first three matches this season but has countered with just two goals while being outshot 49-22. Junior midfielder Angie Muir and junior midfielder Jenny Southard own those markers, which came in a five-minute flurry at Ball State on Sept. 2. Senior defender Laura Miller is the only other Bulldog on the scoresheet with an assist on Southard's strike.

Senior goalkeeper Annalise Larkin recorded eight saves at Louisville, lowering her season goals-aainst average to 1.67. Larkin ranks fifth in the circuit with 17 saves.

Freshman midfielder Alex Shaffer was the only reserve used in Sunday's defeat at Louisville.

Butler's season-opening five-match road swing concludes with stops at Indiana State on Tuesday and Miami (Ohio) on Friday. The Bulldogs make their home-field debut Sunday versus Belmont.

Ramblers' comeback bid falls short
Loyola split two home matches last week, moving to 1-3-0 on the season. The Ramblers blanked cross-town rival DePaul 2-0 on Wednesday and rallied late before giving up a late goal in Saturday's 3-2 loss to La Salle.

Sophomore forward Cynthia Morote-Ariza set up both goals against the Blue Demons, giving her three assists for the season. She led the League with nine last fall and is tied with Milwaukee's Erin Kreuser atop the loop charts this season. Morote-Ariza also notched her first goal of 2007 Sunday, hitting the net to tie the match in the 77th minute versus La Salle.

Junior defender Caitlin Brown opened the Ramblers' scoring Saturday with her first goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Sarah McPartlan netted the match-winner versus DePaul, with sophomore forward Jackie Vera tacking on an insurance goal with two minutes remaining.

Senior Lauren Sommer and freshman Colleen Dougherty shared the shutout versus DePaul, with each netminder logging one save. Sommer ranks fourth in the League with a 1.20 goals-against average.

Loyola faces two more local rivals in a busy week, visiting Northwestern on Wednesday night before hosting Northern Illinois on Friday. The Ramblers meet Penn on Sunday at Toyota Park, the home of the MLS's Chicago Fire.

Penguins come close twice
Youngstown State fell to 0-3-0 on the season with a pair of one-goal losses last week at the Jacksonville State Gamecock Classic. The Penguins lost to the host school 1-0 on Friday and dropped a 3-2 decision to East Tennessee State on Sunday.

Junior defender Carrie Wack, junior defender Caitlin Lee and junior midfielder Alex Lee were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. Wack had a team-high five shots in the two matches.

YSU led 2-1 midway through the second half Sunday on the strength of goals by junior defender Jenna Fink and freshman forward Lauren Brennan, but the Penguins could not hold the lead despite eight saves by sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney. The Penguin netminder also had nine stops Friday, giving her 23 in three appearances this season after a League-high 133 last fall.

The goals by Fink and Brennan were Youngstown State's first two markers of the year.

YSU faces a busy schedule this week with three home matches in a five-day period. The run begins Wednesday versus Robert Morris ahead of the Penguin Classic this weekend. Youngstown State opens that tournament opposite Albany on Friday and faces Howard on Sunday.

Phoenix road woes continue
Green Bay dropped to 0-4-0 following a pair of 1-0 losses on the road last week. The Phoenix fell victim to an overtime goal at Northern Illinois on Friday and were shut out at Northern Iowa on Sunday.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren made a season-high eight saves in Sunday's contest, lowering her season goals-against average to 1.71. She is two saves away from entering the top five on the school career charts in that department.

Green Bay continues to struggle offensively, being outshot 64-22 in four matches. Senior midfielder Lotte Rasmussen took eight shots in the two matches but that was half of the team's total for the week. Rasmussen leads the team with nine shots for the season, with no other player taking more than two.

Green Bay has scored only one goal---by sophomore defender Amanda Stinson---this season.

Junior midfielder Lindsay Cervenko broke into the starting line-up, opening Sunday's contest for Green Bay.

The road-weary Phoenix opens the home portion of the schedule with a three-match homestand, beginning Wednesday versus in-state rival Marquette. Green Bay also hosts North Dakota State on Sunday before starting League play against Loyola on Sept. 21.

Titans slow coming out of the gates
Detroit brings an 0-3-0 record into the week after losing all three of its matches last week. The Titans fell 4-0 at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday and suffered a 5-1 defeat at Toledo on Friday before dropping a 1-0 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Sunday.

Sophomore midfielder Trina Kochanski scored her first collegiate goal for the lone Titan tally Friday. Kochanski played in 11 matches but did not register a point last year.

Freshman forward Selena Stanski returned from a broken arm to start both weekend matches in her first collegiate action.

The Titans have been outscored 10-1 overall, including 7-0 after intermission. EMU and Toledo combined to outshoot the Titans 19-3 in the final 45 minutes of those matches.

Junior goalkeeper Kate Fortenberry recorded a season-high six saves versus Eastern Michigan and stopped four shots against Toledo. Fortenberry logged 99 saves last season.

Detroit travels to East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State on Wednesday afternoon. The Titans meet Niagara on Friday at Clinton Township, Mich.---UDM's temporary home during the reconstruction of Titan Field on campus. The October 12 match versus Wright State is the tentative date for Detroit's return to the on-campus facility.
