Player of the Week

Stephanie Gross, UW-Green Bay
Senior * Forward * Fond du Lac, Wis.
Gross lifted the Phoenix to a 1-0-1 week, as the senior forward tallied all three Phoenix goals. Against Western Illinois, Gross' 40-yard blast marked her eighth career game winner as the Phoenix won, 1-0. The Fond du Lac, Wis., native started the week with a two-goal effort in a 2-2 draw against Northern Illinois, her third career multi-goal game. Gross is now just four points shy of UW-Green Bay's top five for career points.

Other Top Performances from the week of Sept. 10

Joanna Severson, UW-Milwaukee
Junior * Defender * White Bear Lake, Minn.
Severson helped the Panthers to a 1-1-0 record last weekend at the Hoosier Classic. On Friday, she scored the game's lone goal in UWM's win over Rhode Island. As a defender, she also pitched in to allow just three shots in the shutout. At the end of the weekend, she was one of three Milwaukee players named to the all-tournament team.

Caitlin Bodzioney, Youngstown State
Freshman * Goalie * Avon Lake, Ohio
Bodzioney had seven saves against Bowling Green and six saves against Kent State. Her play in front of the net helped the Penguins keep the margin in both weekend games to one goal apiece.

Jaclyn Thomas, Detroit
Senior * Midfielder * Sterling Heights, Mich.
Thomas' first collegiate goal proved to be the game-winner on Friday as the Titans picked up their first win of the season against Toledo by a 1-0 final. Thomas led the way for Detroit with three shots on net in the match as well.

Cynthia Morote-Ariza , Loyola
Freshman * Forward * Chicago, Ill.
Morote-Ariza scored in both matches as the Ramblers settled for a 1-1 draw with Iowa before suffering a 3-2 loss at No. 11 Missouri. Morote-Ariza ran on to a through-ball to give the Ramblers the lead versus the Hawkeyes on Friday night. She was at it again on Sunday against Mizzou, firing home a rocket in the 61st minute to pull LU within a goal.

Desiree Morris, Wright State
Junior * Forward * Wyoming, Ohio
Morris notched two goals for the Raiders in their 5-0 victory over Kent State. She tallied her first of the game in the seventh minute when she took a crossing pass from a teammate and put it past an outstretched Kent State goalkeeper. Morris then recorded her second goal of the game only 55 seconds into the second half when she chipped a shot around the Kent State keeper.

Horizon League Notes

Wright State (4-0-2)
WSU remained unbeaten by going 2-0-0 last week. In the Raiders' game versus Kent State on Friday night, they found the back of the net early and often. Junior Desiree Morris got it started in the seventh minute when she took a cross from Amy Miller and put it in the net. Morris wasn't done and would tally her second goal of the game in the 46th minute. Jodie Shoaf, Megan Bush and Megan Mattioda rounded out the Raiders' scoring.

On Sunday, Wright State found itself behind 1-0 after Duquesne scored in the 18th minute. The goal ended netminder Steph Comisar's shutout streak at 308:13. Juniors Katie Comisar and Jen Hansen provided the offense for the Raiders with each scoring their first markers of the 2006 season for the come-from behind victory.

The Raiders' unbeaten streak, now at six games (4-0-2), is tied for the longest to start a season in the program's history. WSU started the 1988 season 5-0-1 under then coach Hylton Dayes. The team hosts Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green in its two matches this week.

UW-Milwaukee (4-2-0)
UWM placed third at the Hoosier Classic last week, going 1-1-0 with a 1-0 victory over Rhode Island and a 2-0 loss to host Indiana. The Panthers lone tally of the week was netted by junior Joanna Severson on a penalty kick in the 59th minute against the Rams. Sophomore Sarah Teegarden drew the shot as a Rhode Island defender took her down after being beaten on a one-on-one play. The shutout marked the fourth in five games for the Panthers. Sophomore goalie Erin Kane now has 15 clean sheets in just 25 career games and trails the UWM all-time record by four.

Sunday wasn't as kind to UW-Milwaukee as the Hoosiers' Carrie DeFreece blasted two goals by Kane in the first half to give IU all the offense it would need. The Panthers held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks, but were outshot 14-10.

Severson, Taylor Powell and Ginny Graczyk, all defenders, were named to the Hoosier Classic All-Tournament team.

This week the Panthers play crosstown rival Marquette on Tuesday and then travel to Madison, Wis. to take on Kentucky and Missouri in the Wisconsin Invitational.

Loyola (3-3-1)
The Ramblers continued their stretch of games decided by one goal or less last week, going 0-2-1. On Tuesday, LU visited Purdue and a late goal sent the team home with a 1-0 loss. Senior netminder Emily Peick notched eight saves as the Ramblers were outshot 27-6 in the contest.

Loyola faced another Big Ten foe on Friday in Iowa and played the Hawkeyes to a 1-1 draw. Freshman Cythia Morote-Ariza notched her fourth goal of the campaign on a 12-yarder off a through-ball from classmate Jackie Vera.

The final game of the week was at #18/14 Missouri. The Tigers had not allowed a goal in 2006 until junior Stephanie Pauli headed one into the net in the fifth minute to tie the game. Mizzou would then net two goals before Morote-Ariza found the touch again with a 20-yard drive off the post, but that was as close as the Ramblers would get. Peick had another solid performance in net with a season-best 10 saves.

Butler (2-3-0)
Butler faced two tough opponents at the Chesapeake Challenge in Villanova and Navy and were turned away with 3-0 and 5-1 losses, respectively.

The Bulldogs' only tally of the week came off the foot of senior Caitlin Gill in the 84th minute against the Midshipmen. Goalie Kirby Zwickel had a solid game against the Wildcats in the first game of the week, fending off 10 shots.

BU hosts Ball State on Thursday this week before hitting the road against Eastern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.

UW-Green Bay (2-2-1)
The Phoenix went 1-0-1 due in large part to the offensive production of senior Stephanie Gross, who netted all three UWGB goals on the weekend. Against Northern Illinois on Friday, Gross scored off of a header and a 30-yard one-timer to give the Phoenix a 2-2 draw against the Huskies. Junior goalie Brooke Wikgren played a flawless first half and re-entered for the overtime session, turning away three total shots in 65:00 of action.

UWGB only needed one tally from Gross on Sunday, which came in the form of a 40-yard blast from the right side of the Western Illinois goal in the 59th minute. The Phoenix clung to the lead with Wikgren and Charla Buxbaum combining for the shutout.

Northern Iowa visits Green Bay on Friday this week in the team's only game of the week.

Detroit (1-3-0)
Detroit dropped a 1-0 decision at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday before posting a 1-0 victory over Toledo on Friday. The Titans were outshot 15-10 against EMU with sophomore netminder Katie Fortenberry coming up with eight saves.

UDM participated in its fourth straight match that ended with a shutout, this time in favor of the team on Friday. Jaclyn Thomas recorded her first career score with the game winning goal in the team's home opener against Toledo. The senior, who missed all of 2004 after tearing her ACL as a freshman in 2003, finished off a pair of passes to beat the UT keeper for the game's only tally.

Detroit travels to Michigan State on Tuesday and then welcomes Saginaw Valley State to Titan Field on Sunday afternoon.

Youngstown State (1-5-0)
YSU was set back 1-0 twice last week at the hands of Mid-American Conference foes Bowling Green and Kent State.

Freshman goalie Caitlin Bodzioney kept the Penguins in both games by coming up with six saves against BG and seven against KSU. Youngstown State was outshot 48-15 on the week.

The Penguins face Francis Marion and The Citadel at The Citadel adidas Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Cleveland State (1-5-0)
CSU had back-to-back 1-0 losses in the KELME Port City Classic last week. The Vikings held a shot advantage in both matches, outshooting Nicholls State 21-10 on Friday and South Alabama 8-7 on Sunday.

Sophomore Ashley Walchack and freshman Allie Riczo were named to the all-tournament team as the Vikings participated in their first-ever mid-season tournament.

Cleveland State returns home on Friday to take on Akron and then heads to Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon. CSU is 1-0-0 at home this year.

Valparaiso (2-2-0)
Valpo went 2-0-0 last week with wins over Belmont, 3-2, and Lipscomb, 3-1. The Crusaders' match against Belmont went into an extra session and the team continued its recent success in overtime. Valparaiso is now 2-0-0 this season in OT and is unbeaten in its last 10 matches when going to extra time dating back to 2003 (4-0-6 during the span).

The Crusaders took 39 shots in its 3-1 victory over Lipscomb, just one shy of the school record. Freshman Mele Cabral earned her first collegiate win in the game, turning away five shots.

Valpo takes to the road this week, playing at Western Illinois and Northern Iowa.
