News From Around the League

Crusaders shut down the opposition
Valparaiso improved to 5-2-0 on the season, following Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Purdue with consecutive 1-0 triumphs over Belmont (Friday) and Northern Iowa (in overtime Sunday).

Six of Valpo's seven matches have featured shutouts, with the Crusaders posting five clean sheets already. Senior Erin Murray recorded her school-record 17th career shutout Friday with sophomore Mele Cabral netting her second on Sunday. The team's five shutouts are already one shy of the single-season record established in 2004.

Junior defender Jackie Thomas scored both match-winning goals last week. She already has four deciding markers this season, matching Valpo's single-season record. Those four markers also account for all of her scoring in 2007. Thomas now ranks ninth in school history with eight goals in her career.

Sunday's OT victory continued Valpo's dominance in extra time. The Crusaders are 7-0-9 in their last 16 overtime matches dating back to 2003.

Valpo has spread the wealth in terms of scoring, with seven players accounting for the team's 11 goals and ten players boasting at least a point.

The Crusaders head west for two matches this week, visiting Pacific on Friday before a Sunday matinee at St. Mary's (Calif.).

Raiders get back on winning track
Wright State defeated a pair of in-state rivals last week, outlasting Bowling Green 2-1 in overtime on Friday and scoring a 2-1 victory versus Cincinnati on Sunday. WSU carries a 5-2-0 record into the week, including a 3-2-0 mark against Ohio teams.

Junior midfielder Jess Rooma provided all the scoring for the Raiders on Friday, including the match-winning goal with 12 seconds left in the first overtime at Bowling Green. It was the second multi-goal match of Rooma's career.

Sophomore forward Amy Miller added her League-leading fifth goal of the season with a penalty-kick conversion against Miami. Miller had missed a PK try Friday and is now five-of-six from the spot in her career.

The Raiders boast the League's top-scoring offense with 13 goals scored in 2007. WSU has hit the net at least twice in five of its seven matches and has scored at least once in nine of 14 halves this year.

Freshman goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson logged three saves in each of the team's three matches last week, giving her a total of 29 for the season. Hackerson's 0.98 goals-against average ranks second on the League charts.

Wright State ventures outside the Buckeye State for two matches this weekend, traveling to Western Michigan on Friday before a Sunday stop at Northwestern.

Panthers drop a pair in Massachusetts
Milwaukee fell to 3-3-0 on the season, dropping 1-0 decisions at Boston College on Friday and at Harvard on Sunday. The Panthers are at .500 for the first time since Sept. 25, 2005, when they were 4-4-2 before going 8-1-3 the rest of that season.

The losses were also the first back-to-back defeats suffered by Milwaukee since Sept. 16-17, 2005. All three of UWM's losses this season have come to Boston-area teams, including a similar 1-0 loss to Boston University on Sept. 7. Each of Milwaukee's last four matches have featured shutout victories.

The Panthers have scored only one goal in their last 404 minutes of play, but junior goalkeeper Erin Kane has helped keep her team in contention throughout the season with her stellar play in the Milwaukee net. Kane leads the League with a 0.65 goals-against average, allowing only four goals in 554 minutes of action this season.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Kreuser is tied for third on the League assists charts with three helpers this season, while freshman midfielder Nicole Sperl is in a large group tied for eighth in the circit with two goals.

Milwaukee returns to the Badger state to meet two in-state rivals this week. The Panthers travel to Madison to face Wisconsin on Friday before hosting cross-town foe Marquette on Sunday.

Bulldogs break out of scoring slump
Butler had scored only two goals in its first three matches of the season, but erupted for nine last week in posting a 1-1-1 record. The Bulldogs routed Indiana State 7-3 on Tuesday and tied Miami (Ohio) 2-2 on Sunday before falling to 2-3-1 overall with a 1-0 loss to Belmont on Sunday.

The seven goals were Butler's highest one-game output since a 7-1 victory over Cleveland State on Oct. 1, 2006.

Junior midfielder Angie Muir led the way with two goals and four assists for the week, with a marker and three helpers in Tuesday's romp. She added a goal and set up the tying strike in the 82nd minute at Miami. Muir is now ranked third in the League with ten points this season.

Sophomore forward Carrie Twyman registered a hat trick against the Sycamores, while sophomore midfielder Kenzie Koka added two goals.

Freshman forward Lindsay continued her strong play, recording her second goal of the season at ISU.

Senior goalkeeper Annalise Larkin registered a season-high 12 saves to preserve Friday's tie.

The Bulldogs continue a homestand this week with matches versus Indiana on Friday and versus Toledo on Sunday. Friday's contest is slated for Kuntz Stadium.

Vikings drop two close ones
Cleveland State fell to 2-5-0 on the season, losing two one-goal decisions last week. Homestanding Akron posted a 1-0 shutout on Friday before Canisius edged the Vikings 2-1 on Sunday.

Friday's loss ended the Vikings' program-record run of four consecutive matches with at least one goal. It also carried added significance for senior forward Shayna Back, as younger sister Britni scored the only goal of the contest for the Zips. Another Back sibling, Mandi, plays at Dayton.

Shayna Back netted the Vikings' only goal Sunday to take over the team scoring lead with four goals and ten points. She is tied for third in place in the League in both categories, with junior forward Jennifer Wieand tied for fifth in goals (three) and points (eight).

Freshman forward Sylvia Olsby set up Back's goal Sunday, giving her seven points (two goals, three helpers) for the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich added to her stat totals with five saves in each contest last week. She now has 46 for the season, the second-highest total in the League.

The Vikings are now 2-2-0 on the road but fell to 0-3-0 at home with Sunday's defeat. CSU travels to Indiana State on Friday and tries to end its home hex Sunday against in-state foe Cincinnati.

Ramblers fall flat
Loyola lost two of its three matches last week, dropping to 2-5-0 on the season. The Ramblers defeated Northern Illinois 1-0 on Friday but sandwiched that triumph with a 3-0 loss to Northwestern on Wednesday and a 5-1 setback to Penn at Toyota Park on Sunday.

Sophomore defender Casey Berrier netted the winning goal against NIU, with sophomore forward Cynthia Morote-Ariza accounting for the lone Rambler tally versus Penn. Morote-Ariza ranks fifth in the League with eight points while sharing the circuit lead with four assists.

Loyola's only two victories this season have been shutouts, including a 2-0 triumph over DePaul on Sept. 5.

The Ramblers' seven goals have come from six different players---two by Morote-Ariza and one each by Berrier, sophomore midfielder Jackie Vera, senior midfielder Caitlin Brown, sophomore midfielder Sarah McPartlan and freshman forward Ashley Funk.

Penn's five-goal outburst marked the highest total by an LU opponent since Green Bay scored six times in 2005. After allowing 25 goals in 24 matches last season, the Ramblers already have given up 13 in seven outings this fall.

Loyola opens Horizon League play Friday as the reigning League champions visit Green Bay. The Ramblers conclude the weekend at home Sunday against Eastern Illinois.

Penguins score first victory of 2007
Youngstown State starts the week at 1-5-0 following Sunday's 5-1 rout of Howard. YSU, which lost 1-0 to Robert Morris on Wednesday and 2-1 to Albany on Friday, got a record-setting performance from freshman forward Lauren Brennan to salvage the final outing of the week.

Brennan tied a YSU single-match standard with four goals against Howard. She also set up sophomore Jordan Gapczynski's first-half goal for a nine-point total, which eclipsed the previous mark in that category.

After Gapczynski opened the scoring with her first goal of 2007 in the 23rd minute, Brennan scored twice in a 37-second span later in the half and added two more tallies 3:42 apart midway through the second half. Brennan's outburst vaulted her to the top of the League scoring charts with season totals of five goals and 12 points.

Junior midfielder Carrie Wack had a pair of assists Sunday, her first two helpers of the season.

YSU had scored only three goals in its first five matches of 2007 but Sunday's barrage marked the Penguins' highest output since defeating Delaware State 17-0 on Sept. 5, 2003.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney notched a season-best 12 saves Friday and seven more Sunday, giving her a League-high 47 for the season.

Titans continue to search for scoring
Detroit slipped to 0-5-0 on the season, suffering a pair of shutouts last week. Homestanding Michigan State defeated the Titans 3-0 on Wednesday before Niagara posted a 2-0 triumph Friday.

Detroit's five-match skid is the longest in a single season since 2001 when the Titans dropped five straight from Sept. 7 to Oct. 3 of that season. UDM has scored only one goal in five outings this fall---sophomore midfielder Trina Kochanski accomplished that feat at Toledo on Sept. 7---and has gone 343:32 without a score.

The Titans have been outscored 15-1 overall, including 9-0 after intermission. Other statistics shed a different light on UDM's woes, however. Detroit actually owns a 21-16 advantage over its opponents in corner kicks, while foes have outshot the Titans by a relatively modest 66-42 margin.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry moved into fourth place on Detroit's all-times saves list, as her 13 saves last week give her 211 in a Titan uniform. Fortenberry stopped seven shots at MSU.

The Titans visit IPFW on Tuesday before traveling to Missoula, Mont., for this weekend's Nike Cup hosted by Montana. Detroit faces the host school on Friday and closes the week with Sunday's match versus Oregon State.

Phoenix also looking for offense
Green Bay is 0-6-0 on the season after two home losses last week. Marquette blanked the Phoenix 2-0 on Wednesday, while North Dakota State extended Green Bay's slide with a 1-0 verdict on Sunday.

The Phoenix is scoreless in the last 365:37, including four consecutive shutouts since sophomore defender Amanda Stinson scored the team's only goal of the year in the closing minutes versus Western Illinois on Sept. 2. The four consecutive shutouts mark Green Bay's longest scoreless streak since a similar four-match run early in the 1988 season.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren matched her season-high with eight saves against Marquette and moved into moved into fifth place in school history with 236 career stops She needs five more to climb into fourth place on that list, and Wikgren's performance last week lowered her season goals-against average to 1.64.

The Phoenix opens Horizon League play against defending League champion Loyola. That is the only match of the week for Green Bay and the team's last home contest until an Oct. 3 showdown against in-state rival Milwaukee.
