News From Around the League

Ramblers opens title defense with a win
Loyola improved to 4-5-0 overall with a pair of victories last week. The Ramblers also opened the defense of their 2006 League title successfully, defeating Green Bay 3-2 on Friday before posting a 2-0 shutout over Eastern Illinois on Sunday for their first set of back-to-back victories in 2007.

Sophomore forward Cynthia Morote-Ariza played a part in all three goals Friday, opening the scoring in the first half and scoring the match-winner with 8:24 remaining. She also set up the tying goal three minutes earlier for a five-point night. Morote-Ariza leads the League with five helpers this year and ranks second with 13 points.

Sophomore forward Jackie Vera added her second goal of the year and an assist at Green Bay, while senior forward Katie Heidenreich notched four points last week. She assisted on Morote-Ariza's winning tally Friday before scoring the winning goal and setting up sophomore midfielder Ashley Morawski's insurance marker in the 90th minute against Eastern Illinois.

Freshman goalkeeper Colleen Dougherty earned the shutout Sunday with two saves.

Loyola has recorded three shutouts in its last four home matches, including clean sheets against DePaul (Sept. 5) and Northern Illinois (Sept. 14). After a Sunday matinee at Drake, the Ramblers will play their next three contests at home.

Raiders keep rolling along
Wright State notched a pair of shutouts, blanking Western Michgan 2-0 on Friday and posting a 1-0 victory at Northwestern on Sunday. The Raiders now have won four matches in a row to improve to 7-2-0 on the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson stopped a total of 12 shots to earn her third and fourth shutouts of the year. Hackerson is tied with Milwaukee's Erin Kane for the League lead in shutouts and ranks second with a 0.77 goals-against average. She has not allowed a goal in her last 237 minutes of action.

Freshmen Amber Kasmer and Jen Agueci scored two of the Raiders' three goals last week. Agueci netted the second goal at Western Michigan for her third marker of the season, while Kasmer recorded her second goal of the year---both match-winners---at Northwestern. Kasmer also has a pair of assists for six points this fall.

Wright State has allowed only seven goals in nine outings, with three of those coming against Ohio State on Sept. 4. Since that game, the Raiders have out-scored their opponents by an 11-3 margin.

Wright State puts its winning streak on the line Friday when the Raiders visit #4/5 Texas on Friday in their only match of the week. Wright State is 1-0-1 all-time against the Big 12 Conference, tying Nebraska in the season opener last year and defeating Texas A&M 3-0 in 1991.

Panthers shut down the opposition
Milwaukee claimed state bragging rights in two matches last week, defeating Wisconsin 1-0 on Friday and playing #24/12 Marquette to a scoreless draw on Sunday. The Panthers improved to 4-3-1 on the season.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Kane posted both shutouts, giving her a League-record 30 for her career. Kane stopped seven shots against Marquette for her third shutout against a ranked opponent. Kane owns a 0.82 goals-against average against top-25 teams in her career.

Kane shares the League lead with four clean sheets this season and tops the circuit with a goals-against average of 0.48. Milwaukee has allowed only four goals in eight matches this season, with no more than one in any contest. All three of the Panthers' losses have come by 1-0 scores.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Kreuser netted the match-winner against Wisconsin, hitting the net 102 seconds after intermission for her first goal of the year. She became the sixth different Panther to score a goal this season, although only freshman midfielder Nicole Sperl (two) has more than one.

Milwaukee begins its quest for an unprecedented eighth consecutive regular-season title this weekend, traveling to Butler for a Friday contest before playing at Detroit on Sunday. UWM is 41-1-2 in League play since 2000.

Crusader attack dries up in California
Valparaiso lost a pair of matches over the weekend, falling to 5-4-0 on the season after a 1-0 defeat at Pacific on Friday and a 1-0, overtime setback against Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Sunday.

Sunday's loss snapped a 16-match unbeaten streak in overtime contests for the Crusaders, who lost in extra time for the first time since 2003. Valpo had gone 9-0-7 since its last overtime defeat.

Senior goalkeeper Erin Murray recorded 12 saves in her return to her native state, including ten in a losing effort on Friday. The Pleasanton, Calif., native owns a 0.99 goals-against mark with 33 saves for the season.

Eight of Valpo's nine matches have featured shutouts. The Crusaders have not scored a first-half goal in their last six outings, while opponents have scored in only four of 18 halves of play this season.

Junior defender Jackie Thomas continues to lead the League with four match-winning goals this year. Those tallies represent the entirety of her scoring, putting Thomas into a tie for third place on the League scoring charts.

Valpo begins Horizon League play Sunday, hosting Butler. The Crusaders, who own a lofty 21-6-1 record on their home field in the last four seasons, get one final tuneup Friday when they host Indiana State.

Bulldogs come up just short, again
Butler slipped to 2-5-1 on the season following a pair of home losses last week. The Bulldogs fell 2-1 to Indiana on Wednesday before a 1-0 loss to Toledo on Sunday. Each of Butler's last four losses have come by one goal.

Freshman midfielder Courtney Lord staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead against IU with her unassisted goal in the first half, but the Hoosiers came back with two second-half tallies to claim the victory. Toledo earned the win Sunday with a goal late in the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Annalise Larkin notched seven saves Friday and eight more Sunday to keep the Bulldogs in contention. She has 47 saves this season while compiling a 1.42 goals-against average.

Junior forward Angie Muir leads the Bulldogs with ten points (three goals and four assists). She ranks seventh on the League goal charts, second in assists and fifth in points.

Sophomore forward Carrie Twyman also has three goals this season for a six-point total, with freshman forward Lindsey Fox next on the team scoring charts with two goals and an assist for five points.

Butler opens Horizon League play Friday, hosting Milwaukee at Varsity Field in its only match of the week. The match was originally slated to be played in the Butler Bowl, but was moved due to scheduling conflicts.

Titans break into victory column
Detroit won two of its three matches last week, improving to 2-6-0 on the season. The Titans recorded a 4-0 victory at IPFW on Tuesday and split two matches at the Nike Cup in Missoula, Mont., falling 2-1 to host Montana on Friday but outlasting Oregon State 1-0 in overtime Sunday.

Sophomore forward Trina Kochanski had a goal and an assist in Tuesday's victory and netted the overtime golden goal Sunday. She leads the team with seven points (three goals and the one assist) this season.

Only two other Titans have hit the net so far in 2007. Freshman forward Selena Stanski scored the first two goals of her career in Tuesday's triumph, with sophomore forward Emily Kiely netting goals Tuesday and Friday for her first two markers of the year. Kiely had two goals and three assists in 2005 but missed all of last season due to injury.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry notched six saves in Sunday's victory, giving her 224 for her career. The two shutouts give her 18 in a Titan uniform and lowered her season goals-against average to 2.10.

Detroit begins Horizon League play with home dates this weekend. Green Bay comes to town on Friday before a Sunday showdown against Milwaukee. The Titans ousted UWM from the League Championship in the semifinals last fall.

Vikings' skid hits four
Cleveland State stands at 2-7-0 on the season following a 3-1 loss at Indiana on Friday and a 4-1 home defeat against Cincinnati on Sunday. The Vikings have lost four matches in a row.

Junior forward Jennifer Wieand and senior forward Shayna Back teamed up to score the lone goal against ISU with Wieand tying Back for the team lead in goals (four). Wieand has ten points (four goals and two assists) in 2007, already surpassing her previous career point total (nine) from her first two seasons at CSU.

Back picked up her team-high third assist of the year in the match, giving her 11 points for the season (fourth-best on the League charts). Back led the Vikings with 14 points last fall.

Through nine matches, Cleveland State has scored 13 goals and been shut out only twice this season. Last year, the Vikings managed only 16 goals while being blanked in ten of their 20 contests. CSU is the first League school to boast a pair of double-digit scorers this year.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich stopped six shots in Friday's defeat. She stands second on the League charts with 56 saves this year.

Cleveland State stays home for two matches this weekend, hosting Robert Morris on Friday before the League opener versus Green Bay on Sunday.

Penguins' struggles continue
Youngstown State enters the week at 1-8-0 after three losses last week. The Penguins fell 2-0 to Kent State on Wednesday, 3-2 in overtime to IUPUI on Friday and 3-0 to Bowling Green on Sunday.

Freshman forward Lauren Brennan tried to rally YSU with two second-half goals on Friday but IUPUI hit the net in overtime to claim that victory. Brennan has scored six goals in her last four matches and leads the circuit with seven goals and 16 points for the season.

Brennan's seven goals are already the most by a Penguin since Megan Gibson scored seven in 1999 and trail only Alicia Metz's school-record 13 in 1997 on the YSU all-time charts. Including her two assists, Brennan has played a role in nine of the team's ten goals in 2007.

Sophomore defender Mariah Snyder stepped into the net after sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney was injured in overtime Friday and played the entire 90 mintues in goal on Sunday. Snyder recorded 13 saves against Bowling Green, the highest single-match total in the League this year.

Youngstown State hosts St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday and travels to Canisius for non-League action on Sunday. The Penguins then close the regular season with eight consecutive League matches in October, beginning Oct. 5 at Green Bay.

Phoenix lets lead slip away
Green Bay dropped to 0-7-0 on the season after a 3-2 loss to Loyola on Friday night in both teams' League opener. The Phoenix held its first lead of the season but allowed two goals in the final 12 minutes as Loyola scored twice in a 2:47 span to take the victory.

Freshman midfielder Christy Logan tied the match at 1-1 with her first collegiate goal and sophomore forward Meghan McKenzie staked Green Bay to a 2-1 advantage with her second goal of the year at 74:10.

Green Bay had scored only once in its first six matches of the year (by sophomore defender Amanda Stinson versus Western Illinois on Sept. 2), and Logan's strike ended a 425:50 scoreless streak for the Phoenix.

The current seven-match losing streak is the longest for Green Bay since a nine-match slide in 2001.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren added to her career totals with four saves, giving her 40 this season and 240 in her career. Her next stop will move Wikgren into fourth place on the Phoenix career charts. Wikgren owns a 1.83 goals-against average for the year.

The Phoenix continues Horizon League play with two road matches this week, visiting Detroit on Friday and Cleveland State on Sunday.
