Player of the Week
Brooke Wikgren, Green Bay, Freshman, Goalkeeper, Champaign, Ill.
Wikgren lifted the Phoenix to a 1-0-1 week in Horizon League play on the road, as the freshman goalkeeper posted a pair of shutouts - her first solo efforts of her career - in UW-Green Bay's 0-0 tie with Wright State Oct. 1 and a 2-0 win over Youngstown State Oct. 3. Against Wright State, Wikgren made a season-high seven saves, including two in the second overtime session, to give the Phoenix a scoreless draw against the Horizon League leaders. Two days later, Wikgren made six saves on the Penguins. For the week, Wikgren held Phoenix opponents scoreless for 200 minutes, making 13 saves.
Other Top Performers
Meredith Buemi, Butler, Junior, Forward, Westerville, Ohio
Junior Meredith Buemi sparked the Butler offense over the past week, one that included a win over league foe Loyola, getting revenge for the Ramblers bouncing the Bulldogs from the 2003 Horizon League Championships. Buemi had a goal and an assist against Loyola in the team's 3-0 win Oct. 1. A play by Buemi drew a foul and led to the team's penalty kick goal against Dayton Sept. 28. On the year, Buemi leads the team with eight points and 24 shots.
Bianca Savarino, Detroit, Senior, Midfielder/Forward, Pickering, Ontario
Savarino scored the game winning goal in the Titans' 1-0 win over Butler Oct. 3. Her crossing shot from the far right corner found the side netting for the only goal of the match. Her goal gave Detroit its first win over Butler since 2001 and moved the Titans to 2-0 in the league. This season she has a pair of goals and an assist for five points.
Melissa Ricter, UW-Milwaukee, Senior, Midfielder, Monona Grove, Wis.
Ricter appeared in both games over the weekend for the Panthers, helping the team to a perfect 2-0 road-swing through Northeast Ohio. On Oct. 1, she made the most of her two shots in the game, tallying her first two goals of the season. She also started on Oct. 3, helping UWM gain a 27-4 shot advantage over Cleveland State.
Steph Comisar, Wright State, Sophomore, Goalkeeper, West Chester, Ohio
Comisar had another great week as she carried the Raiders to a 1-0-1 record in two big Horizon League contests. Comisar shutout both UW-Green Bay and Youngstown State at home. She tallied three saves against YSU and six versus UWGB. The two shutouts this week give her four on the season, almost matching her total (4.5) from last year. Comisar is now 4-0-1 in her last five starts allowing only four goals with two shutouts.
Notes and Quotes
Butler Bulldogs (3-5-2, 1-2-0)
The Bulldogs begin their second three-match homestand of the season with a match against IPFW on Oct. 6. Butler went 1-1-1 in the first homestand. The Oct. 12 match against North Dakota State will end a busy 14 days for the Bulldogs, a stretch that will see the team play six matches.
Cleveland State Vikings (0-12, 0-1)
The second CSU goal of the season occurred as Jennifer Wieand and Amber Rasmussen teamed up on Oct. 1 against Bowling Green.
With 14 of the 21 players on the CSU roster being classified as freshmen, the Vikings never find themselves without an abundance of rookies on the field. In fact, in the 12 matches this year, CSU freshmen have combined to start 104 times.
Head coach Derrek Falor said going into the season that freshmen Allie Zajaros and Ashley Kidwell would split the playing time in goal this year with each offering different strengths. The skill level of both was evident last week as Zajaros set a school record with 18 saves against Bowling Green on Friday and Kidwell added 13 saves in limiting four-time defending regular season league champion UW-Milwaukee to just one goal on Oct. 3.
The 18 saves by Zajaros, who leads the league with 95 saves this year, was the second-highest single match total in league history and the most by a Horizon League player this year.
Allie Zajaros recorded another first for the Vikings on Oct. 1 against Bowling Green when she stopped Julie Trundle's penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Zajaros started to go right on the kick but Trundle sent the shot just to the left of center and Zajaros was able to recover to stop the shot. It was the second penalty kick by a CSU opponent this year with Kent State scoring a goal in the season opener.
The health of the Vikings continues to limit the options available to head coach Derrek Falor. With three starters sitting out Sunday's match against UW-Milwaukee, Falor used just two players as substitutes in the match. Goalie Allie Zajaros sat out with a knee injury while midfielder Jessica Larsen (foot) and defender Shayna Back (tonsillitis) each missed both games over the weekend.
Detroit Titans (6-4-1, 2-0-0)
The Titans' 1-0 win over Butler on Oct. 3 was the first time that Detroit has beaten the Bulldogs since 2001 and also senior goalkeeper Alisson Dube's first shut out of the season. This marked her 19th career shutout, extending her all-time lead at Detroit.
Sunday Oct. 10th marks the final home appearance on The Monster at Titan Field for six Detroit seniors. Judith Atwood, Alisson Dube, Megan Husek, Mandi Jasky, Shelly Piccirillo and Bianca Savarino will all be honored in a pre-game celebration prior to the Titans' match with Loyola.
The Titans are now 4-3 this season in matches that are decided by one goal or less and are 4-1 at home overall.
Loyola Ramblers (4-4-2, 1-1-0)
Loyola traveled to Indianapolis on Oct. 1 where it was defeated by Butler 3-0. Two days later, the Ramblers hit the road again as they traveled to Charleston, Ill. to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers. The match ended in a scoreless tie.
UW-Green Bay Phoenix (3-6-2, 1-1-1)
UW-Green Bay started eight underclassmen, including four freshmen, in the team's 2-0 win over Youngstown State Oct. 3. Freshman Jennie Gorwitz made her first collegiate start in the shutout, notching two shots on goal and an assist on the game-winning goal.
The Phoenix, which went 2-4-2 during a month-long, eight-game road swing, will return to Phoenix Field to host Minnesota on Oct. 10.
For the team's second straight trip to Dayton, Ohio, the Phoenix left with a 0-0 draw with Wright State. Both teams played to a scoreless tie during the 2002 season.
UW-Milwaukee Panthers (5-6-2, 3-0-0)
The six goals scored by UWM in a 6-1 defeat over Youngstown State (Oct. 1) are the most since Nov. 2, 1997 in an 8-1 win over Loyola. Against YSU, five players tallied goals, marking the most players to score since a 5-0 over the Ramblers, on Oct. 5, 1999.
Junior Nicole Motl recorded three assists in a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State. It was her second multi-assist match of the year and she now has six for the season, leading both the team and league. The last time a Panther tallied three assists in one game was Sept. 28, 2003, when Ginny Graczyk assisted on all three Milwaukee goals in a 3-2 win over Wright State.
Wright State Raiders (6-4-1, 2-0-1)
The Raiders now face a tough leg through the Horizon League after taking care of Butler and Youngstown State. The Raiders will now face UW-Milwaukee, Detroit and Loyola to close out their conference schedule. WSU is an undefeated 4-0-1 in their last five games and have garnered votes in the NSCAA Great Lakes regional pole as an `Also Receiving Vote Participant' and held the No. 14 regional ranking in Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Youngstown State Penguins (0-11-1, 0-5-0)The Penguins, who are still in search of their first win of the season, continue league action this weekend when they travel to Indianapolis to play Butler. The Bulldogs will prove to be a tough task for the Penguins. Butler leads the series 5-0, outscoring YSU 19-1. The Penguins are meeting with IPFW for the first time in the school history.
