Horizon League Notes

UW-Milwaukee (13-2-1; 6-0-0 HL)
The Panthers pulled out a pair of 1-0 overtime wins in League play last week, using two extra frames against Loyola on Friday and one extra session against Butler on Sunday.

Against Loyola, freshman Louise Vraney came through with the golden goal, heading a ball past the Rambler netminder in the 102nd minute. Sophomore Sarah Teegarden played the role of hero on Sunday with an unassisted marker in the 94th minute.

With the two victories, UWM recorded its 12th and 13th shutouts of the season and pushed its winning streak to eight games, the third-best in school history. Sophomore keeper Erin Kane picked up the 22nd and 23rd clean sheets of her career and now only trails Detroit's Alisson Dube, who picked up 24 shutouts from 2001-04, on the Horizon League's all-time charts.

UW-Milwaukee owns a record of 40-1-2 (.953) in League play since the 2000 season and has gone 22-0-1 at home in loop action since 1998.

The Panthers wrap up the regular-season slate this week with home matches against Butler on Friday and Wisconsin on Sunday.

Loyola (10-5-2; 5-1-1 HL)
The Ramblers lost a 1-0, double-overtime heartbreaker to UW-Milwaukee on Friday, then bounced back to top Youngstown State, 4-1, on Sunday.

Loyola out-shot the Panthers 9-8 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. In Sunday's victory, LU held a 34-5 edge in shots and had four different players find the back of the net. Senior Mary Dale found the net first in the eighth minute of action, while junior Amy Lomas netted the eventual game-winner in the 43rd minute. Dale is now second in school history with 21 career goals.

The ten wins tie a single-season school record set in 2003. Freshman Cynthia Morote-Ariza continues to lead the team in scoring during her first collegiate season. She paces the Ramblers in points (20), goals (7) and assists (6). Morote-Ariza's 20 points this season are the most ever by a freshman at LU, one more than Mandy Brettingen's 19 in 1994.

Done with League play, Loyola takes on Northwestern (on Thursday) and IUPUI (on Sunday) at home this week.

Detroit (7-8-0; 3-1-0 HL)
Detroit pushed its season-best winning streak to four games with victories over Youngstown State (3-0) on Friday and Niagara (4-2) on Sunday last week.

The Titans got goals from freshman Jenny Whaley, senior Mary Parker and sophomore Rachel Stesney in the victory over YSU on Friday, while sophomore Katie Fortenberry made three saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Fortenberry now has 13 clean sheets in her career, the second-most in school history (11 behind Alisson Dube, 2001-04).

It was Senior Day for the Titans on Sunday and Parker did not disappoint. Her goal in the 43rd minute gave her 100 points for her career, making Parker the fifth player in UDM history and the 12th in League history to accoplish the feat. The senior wasn't done and buried her second goal of the game at the 48:49 mark. Parker has shot up the Horizon League charts in the last six games, posting 24 points (11 goals, two assists). She now leads the circuit in points (31), goals (13) and shots (94).

Detroit remains in third place in the loop standings at 3-1-0. The team makes the trip to Wisconsin this weekend, taking on UW-Milwaukee on Friday and UW-Green Bay on Sunday.

UW-Green Bay (7-4-2; 2-2-1 HL)
The Phoenix came out victorious in its only game of the week, a 3-1 home win over Butler on Friday.

Senior Stephanie Gross led the charge with two goals to keep UW-Green Bay undefeated at home this season (6-0-1). Gross' two markers gives her nine on the season (second in the League) and 30 in her career (fourth in UWGB history). She is the first player in school history with 30 goals and 20 assists in her career.

Junior goalie Brooke Wikgren picked up the first helper of her career as classmate Jennie Gorwitz ran onto a punt and put the ball in the back of the net for the final goal of the victory over Butler.

UW-Green Bay plays at Marquette on Tuesday before hosting Cleveland State (on Friday) and Detroit (on Sunday) this week. If the Phoenix comes out on top in the two League matches, it would mark the first time in school history (men's or women's) that a team has gone undefeated at home.

Wright State (9-3-3; 2-2-1 HL)
Wright State split a pair of contests last week, dropping a 3-1 decision to Ohio State on Wednesday and knocking off Cleveland State, 2-0, on Friday.

Against OSU, sophomore Amy Miller found the net for the team's only goal on a penalty kick in the sixth minute. The Buckeyes out-shot the Raiders 16-8 and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

WSU evened the week's record with Miller once again figuring in the team's two goals. Senior Jodie Shoaf and junior Jen Hansen each scored off helpers from Miller as she pushed her team-best point total to 20.

With three saves in the contest, senior goalkeeper Steph Comisar posted her sixth shutout of the season, tying her for second in the League.

The Raiders play stay at home this week with a Friday match against IPFW and a Sunday afternoon affair versus Youngstown State.

Butler (4-9-2; 1-4-1 HL)
Butler fell in both of its contests in Wisconsin last week as UW-Green Bay downed the Bulldogs 3-1 on Friday and UW-Milwaukee handed the club a 1-0 overtime loss on Sunday.

BU took a 1-0 lead into halftime at UWGB on a Kristen Harnest goal off a helper from Carrie Twyman. However, the Bulldogs were unable to hold the lead and allowed three second-half goals.

On Sunday, Butler played UWM scoreless through regulation, but a 94th minute goal on the Panthers' 30th shot of the match proved to be the Bulldogs undoing. Goalkeeper Kirby Zwickel made eight saves in the game as the team was outshot 30-3 and faced a 10-2 deficit in corner kicks.

This week Butler wraps up League play with a Friday home contest against Youngstown State.

Youngstown State (2-11-0; 0-4-0 HL)
The Penguins took two losses in League play last week as Detroit won 3-0 on Friday and Loyola came out on top 4-1 on Sunday.

Youngstown State was out-shot 11-7 by Detroit, but held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. Netminder Caitlin Bodzioney turned away five shots in the contest. Against Loyola, YSU fell behind in the eighth minute and were never able to catch up. Bodzioney made 11 saves in the game for her third 11-save match of the season. She leads the loop in saves per game at 7.54, making 98 saves in 13 appearances. Freshman Jordan Gapczynski scored her team-high fourth goal of the season in the 55th minute.

The Penguins play two loop contests this week, taking to the road against Butler on Friday and Wright State on Sunday.

Cleveland State (2-14-0; 0-5-0 HL)
Cleveland State was pinned with a 2-0 loss to Wright State in its only game of the week on Friday.

Viking defensive misplays led to a WSU breakaway goal in each half and CSU could muster just five shots offensively in Friday's match. Sophomore goalies Erin Withrow and Ashley Kidwell combined to make nine saves in the contest as the Vikings were out-shot 13-5.

Freshman Heather Wagner's goal against Notre Dame College on Oct. 4 brought the Viking scoring total to 12 (in 16 matches), two more than the 10 goals that CSU scored (in 19 contests) during the 2005 season.

Withrow has been busy between the pipes for the Vikings, making an average of 5.25 saves per game (second in the HL).

This week CSU goes to Green Bay, Wis. for a League match against the Phoenix before returning home on Sunday for a non-conference contest against IPFW.

Valparaiso (11-3-2; join HL in 2007)
Valpo had a pair of draws, tying Centenary 1-1 on Friday and McNeese State 0-0 on Sunday.

VU had its Mid-Continent Conference record blemished with the tie at Centenary on Friday. After each team scored on a penalty kick during regulation, neither team could break the tie through two overtime sessions. The Crusaders held a 16-6 edge in shots and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Jackie Thomas scored for VU, giving her four goals on the campaign.

On Sunday, Valpo and McNeese State were unable to find the back of the net. Junior Erin Murray posted her third clean sheet of the season, turning away six shots in 110 minutes of action.

The Crusaders remain atop the Mid-Con standings with a 3-0-1 mark in the loop.
