Player of the Week
Mary Parker, Detroit, Sophomore, Forward, Troy, Mich.
Parker scored seven goals for the Titans this week, including both game winners as Detroit went 2-0-1. She had a four goal outburst against Niagara Sept. 17, including going 2-for-2 on PK attempts in the Titans' 6-4 come-from- behind win. The four goals tied a school record for a single-game performance. Two days later, Parker completed a hat trick, including a PK in Detroit's 6-1 win over previously undefeated and Mid-Con leader, Centenary. This season, Parker has 10 goals and one assist for 21 points.
Other Top Performers
Kristin Harnest, Butler, Sophomore, Forward, Middleburg Heights, Ohio
Harnest's goal tied Sunday's match at North Carolina State. The goal was her second of the season and it tied the match at two, as the Bulldogs went on to play the undefeated, ACC power to a draw. Sophomore Jamie Martin assisted on the tally.
Heather Sorgatz, Loyola, Freshman, Senior, Defender, Wheaton, Ill.
Sorgatz scored the only goal for Loyola against Missouri (Sept. 19), early in the second half, cutting the lead to only one. Missouri is ranked No. 10 in the Central Region on soccerbuzz.com.
Dawn Detrie, UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, Forward, Racine, Wis.
Detrie scored her second goal of the season in UW-Green Bay's 4-1 loss to Marquette on Sept. 17. For the year, Detrie is tied for second on the team in scoring with four points.
Elicia Scaife, UW-Milwaukee, Sophomore, Forward, Green Bay, Wis.
Scaife was named the Offensive MVP of Iowa State's Nike Invitational over the weekend, leading the event with three goals scored. On Friday, she tallied her first career goal in UWM's 2-1 loss to the host Cyclones. On Sunday, Scaife tallied a pair of scores in leading the Panthers to a 3-0 victory over Creighton. The Racine-native started one of the week's two matches and led Milwaukee to a 1-1 record.
Desire Morris, Wright State, Freshman, Forward, Wyoming, Ohio
Morris netted three goals this weekend with one of them being a game-winner against Louisville. Against Western Kentucky, Morris netted back-to-back goals in the 20th and 42nd minutes to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead that would end in a 3-2 victory. Morris took five shots against WKU in a game that saw WSU take 18 total.
Notes and Quotes
Butler Bulldogs (2-2-2)
The Sept. 17 match between Elon and Butler was cancelled due to weather. The match will not be re-scheduled.
Cleveland State Vikings (0-8-0)
Delays in the improvements to Krenzler Field have necessitated moving the remainder of the women's soccer matches off campus, with all but on being played at Foltz Field in Strongsville. The only match that will not be played in Strongsville, is the Oct. 17 meeting with Youngstown State. The YSU match will be played at Mentor High School as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The men take on Loyola at 12:00 p.m. followed by the women's match at 3:00 p.m.
Detroit Titans (4-3-1, 1-0-0)
Detroit has nearly equaled its goal output from 20 games last season in just eight so far this year. In 2003, the Titans scored just 21 goals and have netted 19 so far this season.
Mary Parker has almost tripled her total goals from 2003. As a freshman she scored four times. This season, she has scored 10 goals in just eight games. She has netted all of the winning goals for the Titans' four wins.
Senior transfer Shelly Piccirillo has come on as of late, scoring two goals and adding four assists in her last three games. She was named the 2003 Mid-Continent Offensive Player of the Year at Oakland and totaled 11 goals last year.
Loyola Ramblers (3-2-1)
The Loyola Ramblers will play Drake on Sept. 24 in Des Moines, before heading into their first league game against Youngstown State on Sept. 26 at Loyola Soccer Park.
Stephanie Pauli recorded her fourth goal against Northern Iowa last week. She now leads the team with nine points. Emily Peick tallied seven saves against Missouri. The Tigers took 26 shots total for the contest.
UW-Green Bay Phoenix (2-3-1)
For the first time in team history, UW-Green Bay will play the No. 1 team in the nation, as the Phoenix will head to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame Sept. 26. The Phoenix is 0-2-0 in the all-time series with the Fighting Irish.
The Phoenix, in the midst of an eight-game road swing, will face UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 21 in the Horizon League opener for UW-Green Bay.
On the year, 17 of UW-Green Bay's 20 corner kicks have come in the second half.
UW-Milwaukee Panthers (2-6-1)
Sophomore Elicia Scaife became the fifth Panther this year to score her first career goal for UWM. The quintet, which includes junior Katie Campion who led Western Illinois in scoring as a freshman before transferring to Milwaukee, has accounted for 10-of-12 Black & Gold goals. Scaife was selected as the Offensive MVP of the 2004 Nike Invitational and was joined on the all-tournament team by junior Nicole Motl. Motl accounted assisted on all three of Scaife's tournament-high three goals, including a pair of back-to-back corner kicks in the second half on Sunda
Wright State Raiders (4-4-0)
The Raiders are now an even 4-4 on the season and 2-2 on their current five-game road trip that ends in Indianapolis against the Bulldogs. This week saw WSU improve their record to 12-1 all-time against Louisville (Sept. 17) and earned a hard fought win at Western Kentucky (Sept. 19). The Raiders will square off with Butler to finish up their five-game road trip and return home to face Youngstown State on Sept. 28.
Youngstown State Penguins (0-6-1, (0-1-0)
YSU will look to get back on the winning track this weekend, when it will host Niagara on Sept. 24 and then travel to Loyola on Sept. 26. Niagara will prove to be a tough task for the Penguins as it owns the series 5-0 thus far. However last season, YSU picked up its first Horizon League victory when it defeated Loyola 1-0 at home.
