Indianapolis -

Butler University senior Kent Wories (men's cross country) and Valparaiso University senior Ani Michl (women's soccer) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Oct. 2).

Wories ran the second-fastest time of his career at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday (Sept. 28). His time of 25:53 earned him 114th-place overall, and third among his Bulldog teammates, the best of his career.

In the classroom, Wories carries a 3.965 grade-point average as a finance major. He has been named to the Horizon League Academic All-League Team and the Horizon League Honor Roll, as well as the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He also earned recognition as a Josten's Scholar-Athlete last year.

Michl scored two goals in Valpo's victory against Indiana State last week. Her first goal put the Crusaders on top 1-0 just 14 minutes into the match, and her second secured the win with four minutes left. She fired seven shots on the weekend, with five of them ending up on goal.

Academically, Michl excels with a 4.0 grade-point average as a nursing major. She was previously named to the Mid-Continent Conference All-Academic Team as a freshman, as well as the Dean's List at Valpo. She also earned Valparaiso University semester honors for having a 4.0 throughout her freshman year.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
