Butler University senior Kent Wories (men's cross country) and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay sophomore Amanda Stinson (women's soccer) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Oct. 16).

At the Bradley Invitational last weekend, Wories ran the second-fastest 8K of his career with a time of 25:47. He was the Bulldog's top finisher, placing 33rd out of 148 athletes, and the top Horizon League runner. His first-place team finish was his best effort this season.

Wories boasts a 3.965 grade-point average as a finance major. He has garnered recognition on the Horizon League Academic All-League Team, the Horizon League Honor Roll, the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and as a Josten's Scholar-Athlete. He has also been named the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week one other time this season.

Stinson scored her third goal of the season against Valparaiso on Sunday (Oct. 14). She now leads the team offensively with three goals for six points on the season, while as a defender, she averages over 85 minutes per match in playing time.

As a sophomore, Stinson tauts a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a human biology major. Her academic efforts aided her Phoenix team in earning the NSCAA team academic award in 2006.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
