Dayton, Ohio - University of Florida Assistant Track and Cross Country Coach Sylvia Kamp has been named Wright State University Head Men's and Women's Cross Country and Women's Track Coach, WSU Athletics Director Mike Cusack announced today.

During her three years at Florida, Kamp helped lead the Gator men's cross country team into the top 10 for the first time since 1994. During her tenure, the track teams finished as high as second and no lower than 5th in the NCAA Championships.

"Sylvia was recommended very highly by some respected coaches, and impressed everyone during her interview," Cusack said. "She was the unanimous choice from a very strong pool of candidates. She brings the breadth of experience in building and improving programs at all levels that should enable our program to become competitive within our conference and beyond. I am extremely excited for our student athletes that they will have Sylvia working with them."

Prior to going to Florida, Kamp was an assistant at Xavier and Butler. At Butler she helped Head Coach Joe Franklin develop a cross country program that consistently competed at the national level. Among those accomplishments of the Bulldog program during her tenure were 30 Horizon League individual champions, two NCAA qualifying cross country teams, eight NCAA individual track qualifiers, two All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans.

"I'm excited to be returning to the Midwest and especially the Horizon League," Kamp said. I am looking forward to working for an institution committed to making Wright State a conference and national competitor. The cross country and track teams will strive for success on the athletic field, in the classroom and in the community."

Kamp served as an assistant coach at Xavier in Cincinnati for two years while earning a Master's of Education in Sports Administration degree. At Centre College, she earned bachelor's degrees in biology and history and was also a four-year member of the track and cross country teams. A team captain her final three years, Kamp earned All SCAC cross country honors all four years and was named to the NCAA Division III All Southwest Region team in 1998. She set school records in distance medley relay and the 3,000 meter. In addition to her activities on the track, she earned several academic awards, served as a member on the Committee on Athletics and Recreation.
