Wright State, Valpo Collect Wins on Tuesday

Wright State took a dramatic victory at the Nutter Center, while Valparaiso collected a win on the road on Tuesday night. In Spokane, Wash., Butler fell at Gonzaga.

Wright State 80, Idaho 78 (ot)
In a game that featured more ups and down than nearby Kings Island, Wright State snatched an 80-78 overtime win over visiting Idaho on Julius Mays' three-pointer at the buzzer.

Wright State (5-8) thought it had the game won in regulation after Reggie Arceneaux knocked down two free throws to put the Raiders ahead, 69-66 with 1.1 seconds left. On the inbounds, however, Landon Tatum swished a heave from just beyond half court, clearly beating the buzzer and forcing overtime.

The dramatics were not over, as the lead changed hands five times in overtime, including four times in the final 21 seconds. With the Raiders ahead, 75-73, Idaho's Deremy Geiger drained a three from the right wing to put the Vandals up a single point; Arceneaux raced down court and with 12.2 ticks left, hit a 15-foot jumper to put WSU back ahead, 77-76.

Idaho came back down court, as Dazmond Starke hit a layup with four seconds showing on the clock. Wright State raced down court, with Mays coming up the right side, moving to the middle of the court with a behind-the-back dribble and banking in a runner from the top of the three-point arc, sending the Raiders into a wild celebration.

The bucket gave Mays a new career high, as the junior scored 28 points in his first game back from injury. Arceneaux had a career-best 19 points. The duo was a combined 17-for-30 from the floor with seven assists.

Valparaiso 59, Northern Illinois 48
Struggling from the floor, Valparaiso attacked the rim, outscoring Northern Illinois by 14 points in the second half en route to a 59-48 win at the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill.

Valparaiso (8-4) was aided by Ryan Broekhoff's sixth double-double of the year and second straight, as the junior tallied 19 points and 14 rebounds. Broekhoff was 5-of-6 at the free throw line, leading a Crusader effort that saw the team go 16-of-19 in the game and 12-of-15 in the game's final 20 minutes.

With Valpo trailing 39-38, Broekhoff gave the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish, knocking down his second three-pointer of the game to lift Valparasio to a 41-39 advantage. With the Crusaders ahead, 45-42, with 6:18 left, Will Bogan would score five of Valpo's next seven points in a 7-0 spurt that put the Brown and Gold up by 10 with four minutes on the clock.

Bogan finished with 18 points, his best effort as a Crusader.

Erik Fromm scored a career-high 16 points, but Butler struggled from the field in a 71-55 loss to Gonzaga at the McCartney Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash.

Fromm was hot from the start, knocking down Butler's (5-7) first bucket of the game and going 4-of-6 from three-point range and 6-of-11 from the floor. However, the rest of the team went 2-of-19 from behind the three-point arc, with the second three coming in the final minute of play. Overall, Butler shot 24-for-65 from the field and 6-of-25 from three-point range.

Despite the struggles from the field, Butler was within three-four possessions most of the game, closing within 39-33 on a Fromm three early in the second half. Gonzaga would open a 12-point lead with 8:22 to play, but Butler would battle back once more, forcing a Gonzaga timeout after breaking out a 1-3-1 zone to stymie the Bulldogs' attack and come within 59-52 on a Kameron Woods tip.

However, that was as close as Butler would come down the stretch, as Gonzaga ended the game on a 12-3 run.

Khyle Marshall was the only other Bulldog to join Fromm in double figures, scoring 10 points.
