INDIANAPOLIS -- Wright State senior Martin Arguello (Foz do Iguaca, Brazil) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while UIC senior Teona Tsertsvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia) has earned Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of April 9-15. The accolade is the second of the year for both Arguello and Tsertsvadze.
In his lone match of the week, Arguello helped lift Wright State (16-4, 5-0 Horizon) into first place in the men’s tennis standings with a 4-3 victory over Green Bay (16-6, 5-1 Horizon). The Raiders are in position to claim their first Horizon League regular season men’s tennis championship.
Tsertsvadze lifted UIC (13-3, 6-0 Horizon) to a 5-2 win in a battle of League unbeatens when the Flames knocked off Cleveland State (13-8, 5-1 Horizon) on Saturday. The following day, the senior helped the Flames collect their 139th consecutive League win, 7-0, over Youngstown State.
After Wright State entered singles play trailing 1-0, Arguello came through with the decisive point of the match at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. In dual match play, the senior is 14-6, including a 5-0 mark at No. 1 singles in Horizon League action.
Tsertsvadze was unblemished on the weekend, first collecting an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to help UIC earn the doubles point against Cleveland State. Playing at No. 2 singles, the Georgian cruised in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Against Youngstown State, Tsertsvadze followed the same script, teaming with Elisa Simonetti to earn an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles before winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
Wright State will be looking to clinch its first Horizon League regular season men’s tennis title this weekend, when the Raiders travel to Youngstown State and Cleveland State. The Raiders and Penguins will meet on Saturday, April 21 at 6 p.m. ET before taking on the Vikings on Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m. ET.
UIC is out for its 16th consecutive Horizon League regular season women’s tennis crown and will travel to Milwaukee on Thursday, April 19, for a 6 p.m. ET match. The Flames will host Valparaiso on Saturday, April 21, at 12 p.m. ET, to close its Horizon League season before welcoming Akron for a non-conference match Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
