INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State junior Martin Arguello (Foz do Iguaca, Brazil) has earned Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, while UIC junior Teona Tsertsvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia) has received Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.
Both the Raiders and Flames went 3-0 on the week, while Arguello and Tsertsvadze each recorded 3-0 records in singles play. Wright State secured the No. 3 seed in the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Championship; UIC extended its Horizon League winning streak to 131 matches.
With all three matches having seeding implications, Arguello dropped just one set on the week, leading the Raiders to a 4-3 win over Butler with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. On Saturday, Arguello dropped his second set but came back to claim a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 decision. The junior capped his week with an easy 6-2, 6-1 triumph on Sunday.
Seeking its 15th consecutive Horizon League Women’s Tennis title, UIC wrapped up the regular season with wins over the No. 3 and No. 4 seeded teams in the League, with Tsertsvadze setting the tone. The junior won at love in her opening match of the week before claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the Flames’ win over Wright State on Saturday. Tsertsvadze dropped her lone set of the week in her final match, a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles.
Both Wright State and UIC will be competing in the Horizon League Tennis Championships, which begin on Thursday, April 21, on the campus of North Central High School. The Raiders, seeded third, will take on No. 6 Youngstown State Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. Earning the No. 1 seed on the women’s side, the Flames play on Friday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m. ET against the winner in the No. 4 Wright State-No. 5 Detroit match.
