INDIANAPOLIS -- Wright State senior Corey Davis and Milwaukee junior Cale Tassi have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of March 26-April 1.

Davis picked up Batter of the Week accolades after helping the Raiders go 4-0 on the road last weekend. In Wright State’s non-conference victory at Ohio on Tuesday afternoon, Davis was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the Raiders’ 7-1 win. In the opening game of the Valparaiso series, Davis was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run, drove in three runs and scored two himself as WSU outlasted the Crusaders, 7-6, in in 10 innings. In Wright State’s series-clinching win on Saturday, Davis hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at one as the Raiders went on to win, 4-2.

For the weekend, Davis batted .375 and had a slugging percentage of .875 with two doubles, two home runs, four RBIs and five runs scored. The two home runs were the first of the season for Davis.

Tassi picked up his second Pitcher of the Week honors this season after pitching eight strong innings last week to help the Panthers even their series against UIC. After dropping the first game of the series, 1-0, to UIC. Tassi took the mound on Saturday afternoon and allowed only one earned run and five hits, while setting a career-high with nine strikeouts to help Milwaukee win 7-1.

Tassi has been one of the League’s top pitchers all season as he leads the conference in ERA (2.22) and is tied for the lead in strikeouts (32). He ranks second in the conference in opponent’s batting average (.220) and innings pitched (48.2).

Other Horizon League top performers (March 26-April 1)
Jimmy Risi, Butler, Jr., 1B -
Risi batted .385 and slugged .615 to help the Bulldogs to a 3-1 week. He had at least one hit in each game, finishing the week with one home run, three runs scored and seven RBIs.

Paul Hoenecke, Milwaukee, Sr., 1B/C - Hoenecke batted .412 last week as the Panthers won their series against UIC. He drove in three runs and did not strike out in 19 plate appearances last week.

Drew Dosch, Youngstown State, So., 3B -Dosch batted .375 and had a hit in all five of YSU’s games last week. He hit a two-run homer in the Penguins’ 8-4 win over Akron on Tuesday and was 3-for-5 with four RBIs in YSU’s 9-3 win over Butler on Saturday. For the week, he was 9-of-24 with one double, one home run, four runs scored and 10 RBIs.

Andrew Bain, Valparaiso, Jr., IF - Bain batted .500 and had hits in all three games of Valpo’s series against Wright State. He was 4-of-5 in the series-opener with two runs scored. He also scored the Crusaders only two runs of the game on Saturday.

Michael Schum, Wright State, Sr., RHP - Schum was the winning pitcher in Wright State’s victory over Valparaiso on Friday and was credited with saves in WSU’s victories on Saturday and Sunday against the Crusaders. For the week, he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs, while striking out six and walking none.

Joey Begel, UIC, Jr., RHP - Begel pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits, as the Flames won 1-0 over Valparaiso.

Eric Semmelhack, Milwaukee, Jr., RHP -Semmelhack took a no-hitter into the 7th inning and tied the school record with 13 strikeouts against UIC in the series-opener on Saturday, but was credited with the loss in UWM’s 1-0 defeat. He allowed only two hits in eight innings pitched.

Kevin Wild, Valparaiso, Sr., RHP - Wild pitched seven innings, allowing only two runs and five hits, on Saturday. He struck out seven and Wright State had just a .192 batting average against him as he took the loss in the Crusaders 4-2 loss to the Raiders.

Patrick O’Brien, Youngstown State, So., RHP - O’Brien allowed one earned run in 6.0 innings pitched to take the win on Saturday. He allowed just five hits and one walk in the game.
